I've owned numerous pair of work and combat boots over the years and these rate near the top. First, let me talk about sizing. I've seen videos and read articles that suggest one goes down a full size or more. While I know leather stretches over time, the thought of breaking in something smaller than the 10.5's (normal size for me) I got gives me a tizzy. These are murder when you first wear them. They are supper stiff and after a few weeks of fairly frequent wear, they are still a long way from what I think of as broken in. I'll put them on with a sweat sock and and initially, they are pretty tight and unyielding. After a few hours they stretch out some and get a lot more comfortable. I'll store them with shoe stretchers inside and still they are tight when I first put them on. I'm sure they will get better over time but break in is going to be a fairly long process. Style: It's a work boot. I wouldn't wear them with a suit but fortunately I have a job wear casual is the order of the day. These are not cold weather boots by any stretch. It's snowing here in Denver right now and I wore them out to sweep of the drive. Almost immediately you can feel the cold start to seep in. I put a think insole in the boot, to help with comfort because while the leather foot bed is supposed to conform to your foot over time, it's way more uncomfortable than I care for. Nonetheless, the insole helps keep some of the cold out but like I said, this is not a winter boot. I will say though, the soles grip really well in the snow. I didn't have any issues walking about and not falling down. Cost: Yes, these are crazy expensive, in my opinion, but I think they will be well worth the price over the long run. I've got two pairs of work boots from years ago and they were both over a $100 which, at the time, was a nutty price to pay for shoes. But those boots have lasted me literally for 20+ years. I just had one pair re-soled and they are still going strong. I fully expect these to be cut from the same cloth. I'm not normally a fan boy about things like shoes but I like these so much I actually bought another pair so I can rotate them out during the week. Considering that these will probably be the last work boots I buy, ever (I'm almost 60 years old) I think the value will out weigh the cost. The only thing I didn't like were the stock laces. In my opinion they were way to short so I replaced them with something similar but longer (not sure how long, they were a pair I had laying around). Overall, I don't think you can go wrong getting these as long as you aren't planning on doing any winter hiking.

Great boots. I like the way they look. I did need a different insole but it didn’t take long to break them in. After some use and inspection, I believe these boots will last a long time.

I love these boots. The break in period was a little rough. But, not much worse than my White's or my Wolverine 1000 miler boots. The worst part of the break in period for me was the the tongue biting my leg. Very comfortable to wear. I am a Nurse. I am on my feet 8-12 hours a day on hard tile floors. Not once have I ever gotten home and had that feeling of that I have to get my boots off right away. Even in really high end athletic shoes I usually cannot wait to get my shoes off at the end of the day. Not so with these boots. Same as my White's I can wear them all day long and still not be fatigued at the end of day. I go home after a long day and still have my boots on a few hours after getting home. Sizing for me was different, everything I read said go down a half size to a full size. That was not the case for me. I normally wear a 10 and these are 10 and fit perfectly. My only complaint is that they are turning darker the more wear they get. One of the wonderful things about this boot is that they have a patina, like you have been wearing them for 20 years straight out of the box. It has been a few weeks now, they seem to be getting darker by the day. If anyone has a solution for this please post it. Great boots love them!

I gently broke in these boots by wearing them after work every other day. Then I wore them for a full week during a vacation with long walks. They are sufficiently broken in now. The vibram sole is really grippy and does ok on snow and ice. The Copper Rough and Tough leather is gorgeous. It's the most beautiful leather I've seen in my 20 years of wearing leather clothes. The leather is also very thick and the whole construction of the boot feels like it will last me a lifetime. I also have Allen Edmonds Normandy boots in kudu Taupe and the AE's (while being the same size) are far loser than the Red Wings. The kudu leather is way more comfortable and feels just as high quality though, although I prefer the vibram sole on the Iron Rangers. The Iron Rangers are comfortable to wear 14+ hours a day now. They scuff easily but at the end of the day I just rub them with a damp cloth and it removes all scuffs. Now that they are broken in the ankle part of the boots and the vamp got a little lighter while the rest of the boots got a little darker. I think it's the oils displacing within the leather. I just can't stop looking at these boots. They truly are beautiful in a rugged way. I'm looking forward to wearing these for the rest of my life and if they do get destroyed I'll buy another pair. These boots are fantastic and I think you'll be hard pressed to find something better in this price range.

I bought these with reward points and a gift-card, so I was able to rationalize the cost, but I wanted to leave a review for anyone thinking about spending the money. These boots are great. The soles and leather are of better quality, strength and beauty than any shoes I've ever worn. 6 months in, the soles have not visibly worn -the material bends with your foot, but doesn't crack, break or wear out; and, the boots have broken in nicely. Note, I use these for walking, office work and doing basic yard work and carpentry at home. They're good for winter sidewalks and rainy days. I imagine they can take some more punishment, but I wouldn't recommend for commercial use in construction, landscaping farming etc. These boots look tough, but they're not going to protect your feet the way a commercial boot made for safety on a worksite will. The "rough and tough" leather marks up very easily, but a quick wipe with a wet cloth and single application of Sofsole Mink Oil (which is way cheaper than the Red Wing brand oil) basically made these look new from the box again, and didn't distort the color much. If you prefer a polished, clean look, go with another color.

I don't wear sneakers, but my work boots were 11.5M, so I originally downsized a full size to 10.5M for Iron Rangers because I heard they ran large - this is true, but evidently I went down too far, they were downright painful to move around in, so I exchanged them for 11M. People talk about how brutal the break-in process is with Iron Rangers but it was fairly painless for me, they were quite tight (they're supposed to be snug when new) to start but they just get more and more comfortable and they're already the most comfortable footwear I've owned in years after a few weeks of wear. You do have to be careful with these though, they're not all-day-every-day-with-no-maintenance kind of boots, because they're almost entirely made of leather and the insole can thus disintegrate, and past a certain point it becomes impossible to resole because there's nothing to nail the heel to, so let them dry. A lot of people recommend cedar boot trees or wadded up newspaper - this takes too long in my opinion, I like to wear mine every day, so I use a PEET boot dryer and it works just fine (also keeps them supple for putting them on on cold winter mornings). I live on the east coast where snow, rain, and ice are very real environmental conditions and I have heard people say these boots, even with the Vibram mini-lugs suck in such conditions, but I haven't had any problems with them - I think part of it is knowing how to walk on ice in general. That said, the soles are just about the furthest thing from "non-slip", so if you're going to walk around on slick polished concrete that may or may not be wet, maybe mind where you're going. For normal outdoor weather conditions these serve just fine. Because they're unlined leather, they will not keep your feet warm - that's okay, just wear thick wool socks. The stock laces were too short for my taste (I'm a big guy with big ankles) so I got some Obenauf's waxed laces, ~70" long if I recall, and they're a good fit. I love the speed hooks. Extremely handsome boots, and only get better with age.

I read a lot of reviews and waited a long time before splurging on these boots. My two biggest takeaways were: go smaller than normal (.5 to 1 size lower), and the boots will be really uncomfortable until they are broken in. I only went half a size down from my normal (11 to 10.5, US) and I think the fit is perfect. I think if I went any smaller the sides would be too tight, but as it is I have good toe room, while everything else is pretty snug. Take from that what you will, but I don't understand why so many people need to go down a full size. As for the comfort, I also do not understand the complaints. These boots aren't exactly the most comfortable thing at first, but I've been wearing them for about a week, and not once have I felt like they were really hurting my feet. So many people made it sound like they were basically torture devices until you break them in, but that has not been my experience at all. I'm sure they will get more comfortable over time, but I seriously do not really have any complaints about them now. Though I've also experienced the pain of wearing climbing shoes for extended periods of time, which basically compress your feet and push all of your toes towards a single spot, so maybe my feet are just more well adjusted to discomfort.

After more than 30 years, I had to go back to Redwing boots and I bought a pair of “Iron Ranger” 6” boots to replace my go-to Chippewa boots (Model 20067) which for some brilliant reason have been discontinued. After two weeks of wearing these Iron Rangers every day, they're still as uncomfortable as they were on the first day. The sole doesn’t bend – it’s like there’s a steel shank in this boot even though I know there’s not. There is no cushion insole and it’s like walking on a hard surface at all times. And if you put in one of those drugstore insoles, even the thin ones, there’s not enough room left to wiggle your toes even a little bit. And although replacing them was no big deal, the original laces were too short to lace all the way. I can’t tell you how disappointed I am. It’s not like these boots really hurt, it’s just that they are, and continue to be, uncomfortable to wear. A good work boot shouldn't be something you think about when you’re wearing it. And with these Redwing Iron Rangers, I'm aware of every step I take. An overpriced boot like this should overwhelm, not underwhelm! Of course now, after wearing them to work for two weeks, I can't return them. I feel like I was ripped off. I was promised a really good expensive boot and got delivered a really bad expensive boot. Buyer beware.
