I've been wanting a nice, classic pair of leather boots for years and finally decided to look into it more seriously. After hours of researching, comparing brands/styles and reading reviews, I landed on the Red Wing work chukka. My hesitation about boots in the past was I was concerned they might be too heavy, and I really prefer lightweight footwear. Seeing that these were advertised as lightweight boots, and comparing their listed weight to that of other brands, I decided to take a chance and give them a shot. I also read various things about fit in the reviews, with people saying everything from they fit true to size to order a size down to order a size up, so with no clear consensus there, I decided I'd just try my normal shoe size, 11, and figured I could exchange them for another size as needed. Well, the boots arrived today, and I couldn't believe it. I opened them up, admired their beauty, took in the intoxicating aroma of the leather, and slipped them on. They fit like a glove! I was prepared for some trial-and-error, and then even when I found the right fit, some discomfort as I endured the break-in period, but it seems I must have struck gold, because these feel absolutely flawless right out-of-the-box! When I hold the bottoms of these boots up to the bottoms of my Vans slip-ons, also a size 11, I do see that the Red Wings are about an inch longer, but this makes sense because of the toe box. Obviously you need some wiggle room, and nobody's toes are gonna cram into the very tip of the boot, so I'm going to join club "order your usual size," as I think that is what Red Wing intended. A size smaller and these would feel restrictive. A size larger and I'd have too much heel slip, so I think I nailed the sizing. Given how comfy these boots already are on day one, I'm eager to see how they only become more comfortable as they break in and the leather starts to mold to my foot shape. I am thrilled with the look, feel, construction and fit of these boots and am so glad I took a chance on them! If you are interested in them but had some of the initial reservations I did, I say go for it. Grab a pair in your usual size and see how they feel. You can always exchange them for another size if needed. Everyone's feet are different, but with any luck, you'll find that they work great for you as they did for me.

First off, these are great boots. Right out of the box, you can really tell that they are high-quality and will last a long time. Nice soles, thick leather, beautiful finish. I've been wearing Clark's Desert Boots for years and these are much nicer boots. Regarding fit and comfort, these will defnitely need to be broken in but you can accelerate the process within about a day or two if you work the leather in a couple of differnt ways. When I first put these on, I immediately thought they were very narrow and made my arches ache a bit. It's not that they are narrow - it's that the leatther is very stiff. Here's how I solved that problem quickly - I put on the boots and tied them so that they were snug. Then, crouch down in a catcher's stance so that you're on your toes and rock back and forth. You'll start to make a natural crease in the toe of the shoe and that'll help to soften the leather in that spot. Next, I took them off and started working the tongue, ankle, and sides with my hands - just sort of folding the leather and kind of "rolling" it between my fingers. If you do it right, you'll see some additional creases appear in the leather and the color will lighten slightly. After you've done that for a bit, they'll be noticeably more comfortable. Now, just wear them around for a bit. I've had them since last Friday and I'm able to wear them all day with no issues. I've seen comments saying that you should order 1/2 size down from your normal shoe size but I didn't do that and they fit just fine. I typically wear an 11.5 and I ordered an 11.5 - anything smaller would have been too small.

Sizing & Details... I ordered the Oro-Original in a size 11.5D i contemplated on going with an 11 based on other recommendations/reviews online I saw about going down .5 size. After I received the chukkas I'm glad I didn't. The indeed fit true to size even I still struggled to put them on until I produced a shoehorn. The Leather is stiff and hard. Its the highest quality boot i have ever purchased. The stitching is clean, the color tone of the leather is unique and will match any item of clothing you throw at it. The color is much lighter than the product shots its similar to red clay but a tint darker. IT LOOKS GOOD. Breaking In.. The easiest way I broke these in to have them comfortable enough to wear with out attracting blisters and aching feet was simple and i didn't even need to leave my living room. Break them in by putting them on, lacing them up, pace back and forth as long as you like, then take them off. repeat this til the chukkas get more easier to put on. This method does what you would accomplish if you were to put the shoes on everyday for a week but its cut down to a few hours. you're essentially putting and taking off the boot which loosens the interior stitching and leather insole and makes putting them on easier; opposed to putting them on in the morning and coming home with sore feet over several days because the stitching and leather haven't been stretched enough to give your feet space to glide in smoother. Overall I am happy with this purchase and they look good with my chinos and washed denim. You won't be disappointed.

I've owned many other Red Wing boots and this one has the same high quality, flawless leather and abnormal fit as the other Red Wing boots I've owned. For some unexplainable reason, Red Wing decided to make all of their footwear half a size bigger than normal. I can't understand why, but when you buy any Red Wing boot or shoe, you should order a half size smaller than your regular size. That is what gives it 4 stars instead of 5. Knowing that, I ordered half size down but many don't know that and Red Wing does not advertise that so I'm sure many people order their size only to return them or wear them and claim they are horrible because they are wearing the wrong size. It is comfortable, good looking, easy to match up to any style chukka that seems to have high quality leather that takes time to "break in". The break-in experience seems to depend on individual feet because some say they can't ever break them in and some (me) claim they can break them in, in a couple of hours. All I did was put them on one morning and by the end of the day, I forgot they were new Red Wings. Walking in the boot is the best way to break them in. Bending the sole and sweating on the leather is the best remedy for stiff boots. You can use all the mink oil and leather voodoo products you want but if you don't wear them until they feel good, you will not break them in. After all is said and done, I would recommend these boots. Just remember that they do run large and that you might have to break them in to start feeling the "wonderful" part that many claim about Red Wing Chukkas.

I am a veterinary student and was looking for a shoe that was comfortable enough for me to wear when I'm on my feet in a clinical setting, decent looking so that I could wear it in front of clients, and durable enough that it could get gnawed on by animals and not be completely destroyed (RIP two prior pairs of lower quality chukkas). A year later, this pair of shoes is still performing all of those functions perfectly, and the leather is thick enough to have survived at least two assaults from excited animals. The break-in period was horrible, and literally had me limping at one point. I put some moleskin on the part of the shoe that was rubbing on my feet and eventually they broke in. They're very comfortable now, I've walked around in town with them for a few miles at a time. For sizing: I'd recommend going down a half size from what you normally wear. If you're planning to put in orthopedic inserts though, plan accordingly. I normally wear a 10.5 without inserts. I ordered a 10.5 in these shoes knowing I was going to put the inserts in. They fit perfectly with the inserts, but would be too large without. All-in-all these are a very good quality shoe that seem to have the durability of a work-boot without looking like you just came from a construction site. This allows me to wear a shoe that seems near impossible to destroy but is still presentable enough to wear in front of veterinary clients.

Just received my RW Heritage Copper Rough & Tough Work Chukkas and LOVE them. The vintage look and color of the leather is great. This is my second pair of RW Heritage Chukkas, I also own a pair Briar Oil Slick that I've had for two years. The first pair is broken in and molded to my foot is absolutely the most comfortable, durable boot I have ever owned. I have a flat foot anyway so the flat leather insole doesn't bother me like some reviewers complain about. As you wear the boots and they mold to the shape of your foot the leather insole and cork midsole also start to conform to the shape of your foot and provide an extremely comfortabel fit over time! I also own a pair of Red Wing 1155 Pecos boots that I've had for about 6 years and they are broken in and fit like a glove also. All of these boots are used for casual wear, not work, and look great with jeans. I would recomend these to anyone looking for the best quality Chukka boot available.....and Made in the USA too!!! You can't go wrong with Red Wings. the price is high but the quality is worth every penny. They will last you for years with proper care and can be resoled by Red Wing when needed to extend their life.

This is my first pair of Red Wings and my first pair of chukkas since I was a teenager. After one week of owning them and wearing them almost every day, these boots are simply the most comfortable I've ever worn, right out of the box! I have owned various Irish Setter shoes and boots and enjoy them for their more rugged, Goretex qualities, but these Chukkas are the ultimate in great looking, comfortable casual. I wear them with chinos of various shades, almost exclusively, and the presentation is unrivalled. I ordered my true shoe size, not the usual half-size larger boot size, and the fit is perfect with thin and medium weight socks. I'm a bit flat-footed, but I have immediately found that these boots absolutely do not need an insert, something that I've always put in other boots I own. Red Wing suggests ordering a half size smaller than your usual boot size. I have found that to be completely true for Irish Setters shoes and boots - the pairs I have in a half size larger than my shoe size are too big. So I would recommend that if you size up for boots, do not size up for these Chukkas. 14 September, 2016: Just wanted to state again how incredibly comfortable these were right out of the box. Within the first two weeks of purchase, I wore these everyday, followed by a trip to Colorado, humping it through several airports, hiking the Flatirons of the Chautauqua Trail, casual dress, walking all over the place. They feet like slippers, wear like hi-tech hikers, and as a bonus, I regularly receive compliments from strangers on how good they look!

Quality of leather great, but soles started separating after of a few months of wearing around an office environment! I saw this in many reviews on Zappos and other sites but figured redwing saw and fixed. But apparently not! Other than the that. The boots are nice and comfortable after a short break in. Rather than send them back for repairs, I’ll probably just use a good local cobbler that some redwing stores use for repairs in my area.
