First off, it comes in 2 boxes so be prepared for that. The parts were easily labeled with arrows pointing in the proper direction for assembly. I was able to single handedly put this together from unboxing to completely done in just an hour. The instructions are very straightforward and easy to follow. I would recommend just barely finger-tightening everything and then after the insert screen is put in, then use the alan wrench to tighten up all the wiggle room. I think if you tighten too much first you'll have too many adjustments to do. It looks great and is made of good heavy wood. I love the finish and it doesn't have that cheezy phony look about it. I also like that it sort of looks like a 1920s fireplace that would actually exist in my home. The actual heat from it is OK. One small complaint is that it'd be nice to adjust the temp in degree increments instead of a few presets. It's a bit noisy when the heater is blowing but you won't likely notice it much when you watch TV. I have a soundbar on top of it that I stream fireplace crackling sounds to and it adds a really nice homey tough. The fire looks good enough but not too cartoony. Only about 3 of the preset flames are worth looking at, though. I love the option that makes the embers pulse light and dark, too. I had looked at some other brands that are ridiculously expensive, especially MagicFlame, but I've seen videos that show that fire can look weird at certain angles. Anyway, you're not fooling anyone that it's a real fireplace, but it sure is nice to have and look at. There was only exactly enough hardware to put this together, so don't lose those bolts. ... show more

Very good directions. Took less than an hour to put together. It is the right size for a small room due to not coming out from the wall very far. I have received alot of complaints on how it looks. There is hardware to attach it to the wall so it doesn't tip if you placed a small TV on it.

If you're looking for a review from someone who's had this for awhile, this isn't it. I just got the 2 boxes this was packed in earlier today. I'm a 65 year old woman with arthritis and a bad back. I still managed to put it together in about 2 hours (yes, the instructions are that easy, and the pieces fit together that well). I was surprised to find the only tool I needed was the Allen Wrench included in the package. This is now in our Craftsman Bungalow living room, where the lack of a fireplace was an initial designer error (there IS a fireplace in a much smaller room, once used as a "parlor" ... it does almost nothing to help heat the house, but is a charming addition to that all-too-small room). I'd been looking for an extra source of heat for our large, open living room (lots of windows, columned "wall" between the living room and the dining room, and half a wall between the dining room and the kitchen ... so plenty of opportunities for the heat to escape the room). The finished look is PERFECT for what I wanted. It is up against a wall with an 8" base board, and on a hardwood floor. There's a little space between the fireplace and the wall, but as fussy as I usually am about interior design, it looks just fine. Having lived in New England for over 32 years, I've become enamored of real fire flames, so I can't say I'm overly fond of the fake logs (their glow doesn't fluctuate as it would in real wood). The flames themselves are fine. I'd love it even more if the flames were more robust but all things considered this is a wonderful addition to our home. It adds a nice design element and I can definitely feel the heat it's throwing off. (I believe our living room is about 500SF with 10 ft. ceilings.) Until it's windy and below zero outside, I won't know how well this works as supplemental heat for the winter. Finger's are crossed. ... show more

Extremely pleased. First, several reviewers commented that it would be helpful to have 2 people to assemble this lovely item. I did it on my own quite easily, an average sized woman. Put a well known movie on to help with the tedium of bolt tightening and was done by the end of the film. At one point, alignment was off by 3-4 mm, loosened the preceding couple of steps, gently realigned and had no further trouble. This happened once. Otherwise, assembly was smooth sailing. I strongly disagree with those who state the cabinetry is garbage. It don't even think this is mdf. This is wood, and rather nice wood at that. Dense, smooth, with nicely rounded edges and lovely warm white color on exposed surfaces. The bolts screw into in-place threaded metal casings, markedly increasing purchase, strength of connections, ease of assembly. Unlike so many assemble yourself pieces, there are only 2 sizes of bolts to deal with. Cabinet arrived beautifully boxed and padded. All pieces individually wrapped and clearly labelled. Could not have been more nicely done. Someone put a lot of thought and care into this. Plus it arrived a couple days early. I must admit, my chief purpose is for the faux flames...and the fireplace is completely silent when the heater is not on. If I were request any modifications, I would ask for slightly less orange flames, more yellow in color. But their shape and patterns are wonderful. I had worried that the log configuration on this slim-line version, which is quite different from deeper models, was going to look shallow and odd. But it looks fine, not distracting at all. The slim-line really does look more built in and that is a huge aesthetic leg up. The clean, classic minimalist lines of this piece are artfully done. No ridiculous LED's or logo's to clutter or distract. I gutted and re-modeled a home over 5 years. I am painfully aware of how difficult it can be to obtain a job well done. I love this fireplace. It was hard to find one that was thin enough to fit in the space I have, but this one fits perfectly. The flame looks realistic and has a number of settings to adjust the appearance. I usually use it with the flame only (no heat) but the heater works well. It was quite easy to assemble. One of the pieces of wood had a scrape on it. I didn’t want to return the whole fireplace or wait for a replacement piece. So I had them send me a bottle of touchup paint. It was easy to apply, and you can’t tell where the scrape was. It has a cable to attach it to the wall for safety. I can’t evaluate the remote control because I haven’t used it. This fireplace has transformed my living room into a cozy, pleasant space. ... show more

Let me start by saying this fireplace has definitely met my expectations (which were very high), but I "stalked" it pretty much incessantly before ordering. The customer pictures on Amazon were HUGELY helpful so I will attempt to post some myself in the hopes it helps others. The reason for 4 stars? I felt it didn't deserve a full 5 stars because of a manufacturer defect, which thankfully did NOT prevent me from completely assembling it, but where there should have been a hole and threaded insert, there was only a hole. It was to install the fireplace box supports on the bottom in the middle. Because the 2 other holes were correct I didn't feel this would impact the design and function so I just "ignored" the middle hole. Of course this was pretty much the last piece to put together so if it HAD been integral to the design I'd have had to take the entire thing apart again. The other 2 reasons for a slight knock...I, like others before me that have reviewed, feel this unit should not be 72 degrees at the low end. I'd far prefer a setting of 65 at the low end, and I'd also prefer to see 1 degree increments rather than 3. I know it doesn't seem like it should be a big deal, but if this unit is working like other "space heater" type heaters, generally they don't turn OFF unless the room temperature is 2 degrees above the setting and they don't turn back ON unless the room is 1 degree lower than the setting. I've yet to turn mine on at the lowest temperature (72) with the doors closed and have it auto cycle off and on to maintain the room temperature. If I'm misunderstanding the correct functionality then someone PLEASE post in the comments but I couldn't find documentation that specifically stated how it should work. Additionally, I would really like to see an infrared electric insert option. Because of how slim-line this particular mantel is I seriously doubt any other insert would work with this mantel, other than the one that comes with it. From what I gather Real Flame has 3 inserts total that they use in their mantels. The 4099 which is their "regular" insert, the 4092 which is the "slim series" such as for this mantel and a few others they have labeled as slim, and then the "grand" insert (I don't have a model number for the insert) that works with the Kennedy (and other Grand series) mantels. The insert for the Grand series is infrared; I don't know if they offer an infrared version in the "regular" size. All in all it's a great piece, looks very nice, and while I have it in my bedroom for now the idea is to move it to the living room in the future. What I didn't realize when I bought this and want to caution others to think about, is if you have a large open space, you should consider infrared model inserts. This regular slim line model works great in my bedroom and I have no complaints about its ability to heat that room with the bedroom doors closed or cracked, but I think it's going to struggle to heat my living room/dining room/kitchen space which is all open with no ability to close off doors. Hence why I wish they had an infrared "slim" insert option. One other thing of note...others have mentioned that you should NOT tighten all the screws as you go, but rather loosely tighten so you can make slight adjustments as you add the pieces on. Going into assembly with this knowledge really saved me time and frustration as I did have to shift and move some things a bit to get them perfectly aligned, THEN go back and finish tightening. Also you don't need to use hulk-like strength to hand tighten this unit. It truly does only require "hand tightening" (no drills or anything crazy like that). I really like the unit and would most definitely buy again despite my complaints. It's perfect for us condo (or apartment) dwellers, or anyone else for that matter, that can't have a real wood-burning fireplace. Bonus: The cat likes it! And he's proof the unit doesn't get hot...no way he'd have his paws on it if it was. ... show more

I’ve been looking for a fireplace for our main bedroom for a long time. I’m disabled and spend a lot of time in our bedroom and I’m trying to make it as beautiful as I can. This caught my eye because of the size, style and features. I wanted something that would run without the heat and this has that feature. This was easy to put together and everything was labeled clearly. I put it together myself in less than an hour. The quality is better than expected. I think the heat is a bit loud when it runs, but not too loud. Maybe a little louder than a fan. The heat, on the lowest setting is very hot. It heats up our bedroom quickly. It’s about a 16x14 room. I usually run the heat for about 15 minutes or so, then turn it off. Oh, I also like the timer feature. I’ll set it to shut off within an hour of when I go to bed. If you’ve been thinking about getting a fireplace, think about this one. Hopefully, you’ll be just as happy with it as I am. ... show more
