*** Update 30 June 2022 *** Finally, installed controller and completed on the 26th. Ripped out the old manual system and replaced everything. Replaced gate valve with a ball valve, added disc filter, anti-siphon master valve, three valve header with valves (will be adding zone for a flower bed). So far, have the drip system hooked up for the shrubs, roses and trees only. Two weeks ago, ripped out the oleanders and replaced the drip emitters laying on the ground with 24 inch water spikes. Will be pulling up the builder installed sprinkler system in July (the schedule 120 pipe is breaking can't be used) and upgrading and replacing. The only problem I have been having is with Orbit rain and freeze sensor. It is sending the signals in reverse. I have turned off the signal port for now and I like this option of by passing a bad sensor. It has taken 3 days of trying to finally get Orbit to return my call with a text! Still don't have an answer. Rachio returned my call the same day! (if you call in the morning) The cover being held on by magnets is a bit underwhelming, it comes off so easily I'm worried that something tucked into the same corner of the garage might knock off the cover. That's why minus one star. **** Original Review **** Haven't installed unit so far, seriously considering sending it back! Customer service DOES NOT KNOW THEIR PRODUCT. I now do not believe all the positive reviews. All I wanted to know Is if the master control valve can be independently turned on and off. We are upgrading from a manual system to automated and upgrading the piping as well. The are no sprinklers in the back yard and will be running a pipe to the back yard for this purpose. I want to add a water spigot and run it off the master control valve but the chat line the person did not even know the controller could use a master control valve. After educating the customer service rep that the controller has a master control features. He gave me a link that did not go anywhere and could not find it on the webpage! I have trouble thinking the controller to the app on my smartphone and had to wait till Saturday that I can speak with tech support. Found out the rachio 3 and above can link to both 2.4 and 5 GHz. UPDATE - Finally got this working and I have to say the ease of being able to start zones instantly from my phone is 100% worth it. Especially when you are just setting things up, and having to check each sprinkler head or drip emitter. Now that it works I could not be happier because I can go out of town and not worry that all my plants and immature grass will die. About rachio support: after 18 emails with them I was tired of being patient and polite with them. I was irritated that every other email would be a brand new person and start from step one. However after telling them I was frustrated with that, they assigned a specific person to help me out, and he did. He even offered to troubleshoot with me over the phone on the weekend. I don't think it should have taken 18 emails to reach that point, but nonetheless my issue is resolved and I am happy now. Old review- I installed this about month ago, having really high hopes for the weather technology and phone app. However once I replaced the controller, none of my zones would turn on. After double checking all wiring with Rachio and asking them about the issue - they stopped trying to help me all together. They referred me to finding a Rachio Pro in my area - and there are none... I did more troubleshooting myself and everything points to the controller being faulty. My system worked before changing it out. I am very disappointed that customer service shrugged me off and now I'm out 120$, a lot of time, and my sprinklers no longer function. Its the heat of summer, and I'm hand watering grass seed and all my plants because of this. My advice is, if you get this, install it ASAP and if it doesn't work for you return it immediately.

The convenience of being able to control my sprinklers on my phone is a huge benefit that I probably didn't realize until I got it. I made many adjustments to the schedules, including running unscheduled waterings during extreme heat while away from home, that I wouldn't have been able to do without wifi. My lawn finally survived a summer! In addition, blowing out my sprinklers for winterization was sooo much easier using my phone rather than manually opening and closing the valves. I wish they provided more info on the settings for advanced users. I like their concept of determining how close the soil is to saturation but they should show the real-time calculation so you can see how each setting affects it. I had to play around with the settings a lot before I got it setup the way I wanted. In the beginning, it was watering too frequently and not deep enough. But now after tweaking it a few times it works great. There's been many rain skips that I was glad to see and even a few saturation skips when the weather got cooler. I can tell my soil is just right and my lawn, and garden, is happy. One other minor thing that bothered me is you can't just use any weather station. I guess they have to add it to their database. There's one nearby that's accurate but I can't select it and instead have to use one a little further away. But it's good enough, can't say my lawn suffered because of it. My only regret was not paying the extra money to get their latest model with daily flex and improved weather reporting. But I'm definitely happy with what I have and would recommend this to anyone.
