As near to perfect as an imitation fireplace of logs turned to ember, coal, and cinder as usually is, subliminally convincing from a short distance - if you look out of the corner of your eye while focusing on something else. It is an effective ambiance generator as well as a very effective heater. Whe3re it loses its star is with the sound, specifically the crackle and burn, which is too loud (and without a way to lower the volume). It is particularly rough "whoosh" beneath a convincing enough crackle and popping. This is distinct from the noise of the heating element and most off putting. (Worse is the sound of the "waves" _awful_ bordering on torturous, and perhaps only useful for those who need to cover a very loudly whispered conversation. I like it, am keeping it. It's pretty hefty but not particularly heavy, well suited for a larger space.

Really like this little heater/fireplace insert. The flames flicker very realistically and the embers look very cosy. It also has degrees of how high and fast those flames go or can be turned off entirely, leaving just the glow from the embers. Its very quiet and the remote is an added bonus for a lazy person such as myself, lol, tho it doesn't have much more than maybe a 6 ft reach. Good enough for us do to our particular arrangement, but maybe something to consider. It seems to heat our room well enough, but as yet we haven't had any really cold temperatures (40's is the lowest so far and we have central heat, so for us this is intended to supplement, not replace) to really put it thru its paces. As far as being energy efficient, can't really speak to that either as I haven't had it long enough to see what it does to my utility bill yet. But it does make our living room mighty comfortable and homey, puts off enough light so we don't trip over the cat, and looks pretty authentic when lit. Oh, and for those of you wondering, we got the original version, not the "upgraded" one. Ours has no sound effects (as mentioned in a couple reviews), so I assume that's the upgrade they refer to.

Overall I'm happy with the fireplace. It's the first one I have purchased so I can't compare to others. Heats well but it's a bit loud, but they all might have to be because there's a fan blowing the heat. The flames on this one aren't my favorite, I wish I had bought one with no red flames because they make it look fake. Also the noise options are all a little too loud and the speaker is crappy so it's very tinny and not worth it. Also the logs look very fake; I ended up adding some brown and gray accents. I don't feel like packing it back up and returning it because it's ok, as long as you don't stare at it or play the sounds but I wouldn't buy it again.

The media could not be loaded. It's not real but it's real enough for me. It's just pretty. Set-up was take out of box, plug in. Period. I don't use the heater or the sound effects but sitting here when it's below freezing outside I can almost feel the heat from the fire.
