The summer sun in Texas is intense and hot. We searched for a solution that would provide shade for a vegetable garden with no natural shade. Last year, we tried using shade cloths but they did not endure the frequency or strength of the winds in our rural setting This structure is intended to be bolted to an existing concrete patio or wooden deck that our vegetable garden obviously did not have, so we were concerned about our ability to create 4 perfectly level bases for the 4 posts in the middle of our pre-existing garden. The louvered roof was just what we needed and the majority of the reviews were encouraging. That, along with the number of reviews which praised the quality of the materials and the prompt and thorough responses by Purple Leaf for those who had questions or issues, convinced us to take a chance. This structure must be mounted on a stable and level surface. This required us to pour 4 separate concrete footings (12 and 14 ft apart in our case), each one at the exact height and perfectly square in relation to the others. Because of our winds, I wanted the feet of the posts to be bolted to anchors I set in each footing. Getting the four pads of concrete in the appropriate location was not too difficult, but the challenge was in setting the bolts in the concrete pilings perfectly, so that the posts would ultimately sit in line with those adjacent to it. Long story short, it can be done! It all turned out well. Photos show the variation in height of the pads and 8” anchor bolts set in the concrete for mounting. The pieces were shipped securely in heavy duty packaging. Each painted piece was protected by a sturdy plastic layer which had to be peeled off every surface, including the front and back of each louver. It took a little effort to remove it all, but we appreciated the quality and the protection it provided. No scratches or dents on any of our pieces! All the components fit very well and all the hardware necessary to complete the job was included . The instructions that come with the pergola aren’t great but are good enough to get the job done. The measurements in the literature are quite accurate. The pergola is well constructed and has a nice paint finish. There were no scratches or dents and there were no missing pieces. The package we ordered included 3 louvered panels to install as “ walls.” We have not yet installed those so I cannot comment on my experience, but based on the quality and fit of the adjustable louvers on the roof and the pergola itself, I anticipate no issues. NOTES: Some small tools are included for installation. I would highly suggest having a good Philips screwdriver and some 10mm hex tools. The small screwdrivers provided were extremely light duty and broke after one use. Having some good tools of your own will make the job much easier. Unless you are skilled and experienced with mechanical things and have some knowledge of construction, I would highly suggest having some capable help with this installation. Some of the components are heavy and awkward. I did ours by myself, but I am skilled in those fields. We are quite pleased with this purchase and would not hesitate to purchase another one if needed. AGAIN: Get some help if you’re not highly skilled. Good Luck and enjoy!

I may update this review over time to report how the pergola handles weather. I bought the 10' x 13' louvered pergola with open/closable slat roof. I paid $2,099 plus $300 shipping plus tax in September, 2024. The pergola was delivered to my driveway in 5 separate boxes by FedEx. One box, box 2, was delivered a day later than the others. That one had the instructions in it, by the way. There was no real damage to any parts that I noticed. There is a very slight dent in one part, but it didn't break the finish coat and I put it in an area that isn't seen. The boxes are heavy....ranging from around 58 pounds to around 75 pounds. I think this is a great pergola for the price. It's anodized aluminum, which is lightweight and strong and won't rust. The posts are at least 4" square, it seems, and are more solid than I expected. The whole thing seems quite solid and sturdy when put together. While this color is called 'gray', it nearly perfectly matches my black aluminum deck railing. So I'm calling this 'black'. The instructions are much better than I expected. After reading other reviews for this and other pergolas from Purple Leaf, I'm wondering whether they got a technical writer to re-write this instruction manual. It's _really_ good. Full color, something over 20 pages on large paper. Part numbers are listed on parts even on later diagrams, which helps in getting one's bearings. There was one error that I noticed, which was that the screw for part Cb (I think) wasn't listed on the instructions. (I did figure it out, but it took a while to be certain.) It took me around 10 hours to build this, but I'm kinda handicapped and had to stop a lot. My wife helped with a few parts that required two people. There were a few extra of various screws/bolts. No, this pergola is not perfect. But I gave it 5 stars because I think it is a great deal for the price. I'd say my biggest criticism is that the screws which are used to hold the slats are philips-head and tend to cam out when trying to screw them in. (It's a tricky maneuver because the slats want to move while you're screwint them on.) Robertson (square) head, hex or torx (best) would be nice. I should note that all the bolts are hex head, and I had no trouble with any of the. Most of the assembly is held together with bolts.

It went together without any issues. It changed the deck completely, gets more use now that it’s shaded. Highly recommended

We put this over our hot tub. Works great and love the curtains especially on those nights here in Maine. I would have gave it 5 stars but I found when we assembled it there was a small gap in the middle. Tried pulling it more together but there was no space

The media could not be loaded. I ordered this 20’x12’ pergola for our patio and absolutely love it. I’m a retired 60 year old man and i was able to assemble it by myself in about 12 hours. (The lights took another 4 hours) It took alot of patience and ingenuity to do it alone, so I recommend having a second person to help. During the build I had a half dozen questions to the seller and they responded usually within the same day which i truly appreciated. You really have to make sure it is installed level or it will leak at the middle cross beams when it rains. I learned this the hard way but was able to use flex seal tape on the seams to stop the leaks. Overall it is very sturdy and made well. We hope to enjoy it for many years.
