  • MUST READ if you are getting a puppy
Format: Hardcover
Can I give this more than 5 stars? This book was THAT GOOD! I was told to get this book before our puppy arrived, and I am SO glad I did. Not only did I follow his development as he was growing, but I was prepared and confident for our little guy's arrival. Doesn't matter what dog breed you are getting, this book will educate you on the entire process of getting a new dog. You will learn about how puppies develop and why the environment in which they are raised in is so vital to their development. Why is the right breeder necessary for a healthy dog. Anyone can breed dogs, but should they be? If you are searching for a breeder, Kerry helps you understand what to ask a breeder, what should you know BEFORE choosing a breeder. What she taught me in her book, helped me feel confident in our choice of breeders. Then once a puppy is born, learn how they develop, week by week. We followed the growth of our little guy and marveled in his progress with our breeder. As the book described the milestones, our breeder shared them with the liter families through videos and messages and I understood my puppies progress. The preparations for our gotcha day were easy to follow and I am so glad I took the time to prepare the house like the book says. Even better, were the next three days when we focused on our puppy. He settled right into the family without any problems because we were prepared for the time we needed to devote to him. This book teaches the humans the dog's body language and how to read the dog, learn the movements that he/she is telling you. On some of our first walks after our puppy arrived home, we would just sit and watch the world. I learned that his brain was processing everything going on around him. Something we take for granted was so important to his socialization and development. When my puppy stops on a walk and puts his brakes on, I know something is not okay for him, and we take a moment to assess. In the past, I would have pulled him along forcing him to be afraid of something on the walk which could affect future walks. When my puppy starts biting really hard, I know he is tired and without looking at the clock, I know its nap time. When he goes in his crate, he goes right to sleep. He is telling me his is tired. I need to listen. Those are only a few of the examples of how this book has helped our family with our new puppy. There are so many more. I share this book with anyone I know who is thinking about a puppy. Dog training has changed over the years, it's time to grow with the changes and help your dog have the best start they can in this world. Even now that he is 17 weeks old, I am still referring back to this book for topics I need to refresh, or viewing the author's website for training help or her Amazon list for items we need. I can't say enough good things about this book and Kerry Nichols. My breeder follows Kerry and her puppy rearing is similar to what Kerry does with her puppies. I have such an amazing puppy who had the best start possible and then I have tried to keep it going when he came to us. We are confidently raising this puppy because of this book and the advice in it. I am so glad I was told to buy this book. Kerry Nichols is incredibly educated when it comes to dogs and a valuable resource to anyone who owns a dog. Follow her on social media to learn more about raising dogs. Thank you Kerry for all the time and effort that you put into this book! A true treasure! ... show more

  • Best book ever!!! Most helpful and knowledgeable book for all dog lovers, a must read for breeders!!
Format: Hardcover
Where to begin, so I have been blessed with 4 very sweet and beautiful Golden’s over the years and each one of them has been spoiled rotten, as they should be, also each one has had issues that we have never seemed to be able to identify the cause of. Each one was a little different but they were scared… of pretty much everything outside of our home and yard. We took them everywhere we went whenever we could, they were even scared of going on a walk anywhere it was populated with people and cars. We even had a trainer who worked with our current golden and we came to the conclusion that the psychological trauma that my boy was experiencing was from when he was young. After doing some research and speaking to other people who purchased their Golden’s from the same breeder as I did I found that they had been separated from their mothers at 4 weeks and were caged separately so they would be used to being alone when they went to their new homes. Well that explains a lot. I thought it was something I wasn’t doing right, I never thought about what this poor little guy could have been through before me. I knew I would never go to this breeder again, and next time I would do my research. I was determined to find the very best breeder who loved the breed and not just the breeders fee. In my endeavors I found Kerry Nichols and her book “Puppy Brain”. I purchased this book in hopes of finding out exactly what I needed to learn and look for when I was ready to bring another baby home. Boy did I hit the jackpot of knowledge with “Puppy Brain”. She has such a wealth of experience, knowledge and understanding in all aspects of raising a mentally healthy and stable puppy. Their training begins when they are born. She is a hands on breeder and try’s to introduce them to any and everything they may encounter in the real world. She conditions their little brains to the different noises, smells and experiences and gives them the confidence to overcome the challenges she puts before them. She allows them to work through how they feel about each one of them. She teaches them to conquer. After reading her book I realized all the mistakes I had made and I am determined to right my wrongs. I know it will require a lot of hard work, time and patience but that’s what I’m here for. (Maybe there is a second book that could help with that..hint hint) I only wish my breeder would have had the knowledge in “Puppy Brain” and implemented it so we could have had mentally healthier puppies. Maybe it should be a requirement for all breeders to have to read this book and follow the practices in it. I wish there was a way. So for anyone with a love for dogs I highly recommend “Puppy Brain” it is the best book ever!!! Informative and Adorable 🥰. I am very grateful to Miss Kerry for all I have learned and I am excited for the head start I now have for my new puppy. Thank you so much, Roni Brooks ♥️🐶 ... show more

  • Thinking of getting a puppy? A must read book!
Format: Kindle
Kerry does an exceptional job of outlining how important the first 14 weeks of a dogs life is. How this 14 weeks helps shape who your dog will be. It helps you understand how to raise a fear free dog. How to look at the world from his perspective. It’s not a training book about teaching the perfect obedient dog (the market is saturated with those). It’s a book about getting the behaviors you want through choice, communication and setting the puppy’s space up for developmental success. This book helps you understand the importance of honoring your dog, building trust and asking yourself ”what is best for my dog?”. It teaches you how choice, layering exposures to new things and environment can set your dog up for success rather than behavioral failures. Which is sadly why so many dogs end up in shelters. Lack of the owner understanding what they need to be set up for success. Ultimately it teaches you how to help your dog navigate the world, so that they are calm, happy and can go anywhere with you. It is written beautifully and you can watch along with a litter of puppies in instagram just how important the activities outlined and the layering of positive experiences for the puppy result in raising a resilient happy puppy. I put it up there with Sophia Yin and her fear free handling. In the ideal world everyone getting a puppy should read this! I was lucky enough to raise a fear free Doodle because I was friends with an animal behaviorist a long time ago. This was a refresher for me before I get a new puppy. There is nothing better than raising a dog who feels secure in their life and who is not afraid of things because they had the exposure to build confidence in their first 14 weeks. It’s why doing research into your breeder and asking questions before you commit it important. Great book I hope it becomes a Classic! ... show more

  • This is the book I WISH we had had BEFORE we got our first puppy
Format: Hardcover
This is the book I WISH we had had BEFORE we got the first 8-week-old puppy we volunteered to raise as a service-dog-in-training. We were starting from scratch then – neither of us had even been around an 8-week old puppy, never mind raised one in the hopes it would become a service dog. Although we faithfully went to weekly puppy classes (to train us, and to give the puppies invaluable socialization experiences), there was still a LOT of important information we didn’t have. I know we could have done a much better job if we had had the priceless information and wisdom that is in this book. Puppy Brain is extremely helpful whether you are raising a future service dog like we are, or if you “just” want to have a wonderful family pet! The author tells you the stuff you need to know to set you and your puppy up for success, starting with what you need to do and think about BEFORE you get that puppy, what to do to get the best outcome for your puppy during the critical socialization period (that is already about half over when you “pick-up” a puppy at about 8 weeks), and ends very soon after “pick-up” at around 12-14 weeks. Learn how to set the stage for raising a puppy that has resilience and confidence, and becomes that well-behaved puppy that people enjoy being around. The author’s writing style is engaging and easy to read and understand, and her love of and care for the puppies shines through in everything she says. And, as the author notes, the majority of the things you’ll learn in this book are applicable to dogs of all ages, not just puppies. Since the book’s publication, we have had the opportunity to implement a few of the things that you can learn in Puppy Brain and we are in awe of what a positive difference those seemingly small decisions make. You only have one chance to make a good first impression, and we’ve found it DOES make a huge difference to that puppy, which in turn has a profound and often lasting influence on how that pup turns out. ... show more

  • Puppy Prep: NEED. Buy now before you bring them home!
Format: Hardcover
I don’t normally do reviews, but I had to for this. We are getting a puppy in a week and on a whim, I ordered this last minute. I so wish I had ordered it right when we found out the puppies had been born so I could read it a few times extra before we brought him home! I am only a little ways in, and it’s already so good! It will be a read again for sure. I peeked ahead to what we NEED to know right away for week 8 and the information is clear, concise and easy to follow. You know how people can be really good at their work or interesting on camera/Instagram but then they write a book and it’s sooo dull? And you’re thinking you really shouldn’t have tried to monetize on this? Well this is NOT that. Her writing is so easy to read and it keeps you super engaged. Gives you a whole new appreciation and love for dogs. I will absolutely be buying this again to gift to our breeder as well as sharing with any friends that are soon to have a puppy! ... show more

  • THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ FOR ANY DOG OWNER!!!
Format: Hardcover
ALL THINGS PUPPY in one fantastic book!!! Kerry Nichols is the author of this book as well as an ethical and loving breeder of golden retriever puppies; you can discover her as I did on Instagram @nicholberrygoldens. I really thought I knew so much about dogs and training until I stumbled upon Kerry. After reading this very thorough book, I feel so much better prepared for my next puppy down the road. (The pictures above are of my late black lab Gunnar, my best and dearest friend that I still miss every single day.) Kerry thoughtfully explains health clearances (THIS IS HUGE PEOPLE) brain development, what goes on in the first 14 weeks of life and how to prepare and handle each stage. This book is NOT just about golden retriever puppies, it can be applied to really any breed of dog and lays a solid foundation to educate dog owners on the importance of those first 14 weeks of life. For other breeders out there, Kerry’s well researched puppy development and breeding practice should be THE GOLD STANDARD for ALL breeders. Kerry’s style of writing is a joy to read and you’ll have so much more knowledge that we ALL WILL DO BETTER BECAUSE WE KNOW BETTER!!! Love and humor are dispersed throughout every page, making it a delight to read. I can guarantee that you will not find a better book on raising an “emotionally resilient puppy.” We all would love a puppy that comes to us that has been well prepared and is NOT phased by fireworks, loud noises, riding in a car, vacuum cleaners (this is the short list) and is an EMOTIONALLY CONFIDENT puppy prepared to be the next member of your family. DO NOT HESITATE!!! I PROMISE YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!! ... show more
