  • Fitness for my use.
Size: 3/4" X 16tpi to 1" x 8tpi
This item is required in order to install a chuck on most lathes and usuallly does not come with many chucks.

  • Heavy adaptor with good concentricity that can be improved with a few modifications.
Size: 1-1/4" x 8tpi to 1" x 8tpi
I bought this adapter when I upgraded from an (very) old Delta lathe with 1 x 8 treads to a newer Jet 1824 electronic variable speed lathe with a 1 1/4 x 8 spindle. I had a large collection of faceplates, including some that were made into vacuum chucks that fit on the Delta spindle but not the Jet. It probably would have cost more than $150 to replace all these faceplates. Instead, I purchased this adapter. It also let me use the new lathe to finish a couple of projects that were in progress. The adapter was much more substantial than I expected for the price. In general, it seems very well made. I had two issues with it, both of which could be addressed with minor modifications. First, when I initially mounted a faceplate to the adapter and then to the late, I had a lot of wobble in the faceplate. At first I thought that the adapter was non-concentric. But the problem was that the thread on the PSI adapter bottomed out on the female threads of the faceplate and prevented the shoulder of the adapter mating with the shoulder of the lathe spindle. The wobble was reduced very significantly by making a 3/16 inch plywood spacer and mounting it between the adapter and the faceplate. It still has a minor wobble, but I am not sure if that is the result of the lathe spindle, the adapter or the faceplate. If the PSI adapter had been manufactured with a slightly shorter threaded portion use of a spacer would not have been necessary. Secondly, this adapter is solid, and therefore cannot be used as is with a vacuum chuck. I solved this problem by drilling a 3/8 inch hole down its length. The adapter is not hardened so its easy if you take your time. I was able to get a different spindle adapter for my Teknatool G3 chuck, so I will not be using this PSI adapter for use on the 4 jawed chuck. I think that changing out the chuck adapter is probably much better that use of this PSI adapter with a chuck, both because of concentricity and because the headstock to bowl distance is as short as possible. Overall I am satisfied with this purchase. ... show more

  • Good Quality, Great Price
Size: 1-1/4" x 8tpi to 1" x 8tpi
The above picture of this adapter doesn't do it justice. I was surprised at the quality. This item is a large, heavy weight, finely machined and polished spindle adapter. Both ends screws on smooth. It's top quality at a price that's cheaper than PSI (Penn State Industries), sales it for. And a lot cheaper than other adapters are sold for. View my photos for more detail. It turns true and on center. It doesn't have set screws to lock it to the spindle for reverse operation, but I can drill and tap a couple of holes for set screws if it becomes necessary. It has a solid core on the male threads so you can't use a vacuum chuck. On the female end there are two flat spots for a wrench if necessary. I use an 'Adjustable Slip & Lock - Plumbers Nut Wrench,' its cheap light weight and can accommodate the large size of the adapter (search Amazon # TW408302). The adapter does jamb tight against the chuck and/or spindle so the wrench might come in handy. The nut wrench is also sold at local home improvement centers. This adapter screwed nicely onto my lathe's spindle, right over the shoulder of the spindle to mate with the shoulder of the adapter, as if it was made specifically for my lathe. I did read a magazine Q & A article where someone said their adapter didn't screw on far enough to seat onto the shoulder of the spindle and was asking if he could use a stack of large washers to fill in the gap. The answer was - not a good idea to use washers from the hardware store due to variation in hole ID and thickness from one washer to another. It was suggested to use 'Anti-Lock Lathe Spindle Washers' to fill in any gaps (search Amazon, about $2). Maybe this might help others, but it was not an issue with my lathe. • Beware - I checked it to a 4" Lathe chuck and locked onto shopsmith - but
Size: Shopsmith 5/8" to 1" x 8tpi
I turned it on, shut the shopsmith and as it was winding down, the lathe chuck unwound from the adapter. LUCKILY , I had a hockey puck in the jaws of the chuck and as the lathe chuck came lose, the hockey puck kept the chuck from flying off because as the chuck unwound, the puck pressed against the drill bit I had in place. If this went flying, with its sheer weight could have easily killed or mamed me or anyone around. I believe with he force, it would easily go thru a wood wall and damage whatever is on the other side. I don't know what to do to hold this from spinning off when winding down, please feel free to help I just applied red loctite to the threads and will wait 24 hours to cure, but would feel better perhaps drilling a hole, tapping it and inserting a set screw, but I really hate to alter the chuck as it is perfect and I may drill thru something that aligns the heads so feel it is above my pay grade to do this. ... show more

  • Great, but Needs a Breaker Bar Hole
Size: 1-1/4" x 8tpi to 1" x 8tpi
Great adapter - heavy, durable, and dead-on centering - Can move work from "small" to "large" lathe without any changes or eccentricity. Only complaint is that there is no breaker-bar hole to disengage it. Instead there is a skinny 1-7/8" wrench flat - what turner has a 1-7/8 wrench sitting by their lathe? None of them. Should have a breaker-bar hole, like every other lathe accessory in the world. ... show more

Top quality product. I wish it had a set screw to lock it to the spindle, other than this, it is perfect.

  • Makes my Shopsmith a powerhouse
Size: Shopsmith 5/8" to 1" x 8tpi
If you want really your powerhead, like on your Shopsmith, to be really versatile without having to take the time to dork around with allen screws, then this is the piece for you! The 1"x8tpi thread fits a plethora of heads, and makes changing them out a breeze.
