  • Won't stay clamped for low-speed, low-powered drilling in soft aluminum.
I really thought I had a winner here... I used this on another recent purchase, my Wen drill press (the little cheap one- pretty good value, btw). The packaging left a bit to be desired, the table is held in the box with nothing but a little cardboard, and the hardware was in a little plastic bag... but thankfully the table didn't appear to be broken. I used this to drill less than a dozen small diameter, shallow holes into 6063 aluminum that was less than 5mm thick. The pieces were pretty small, about 80mm x 19mm. Anyway, at first it held up just fine, and it appeared that the shavings were kept out of the works by the little plastic covers, so I wasn't concerned with how dinky it is compared to most slide tables. Well, after the first use (eight 6mm holes) I didn't get a chance to use it again for a couple of weeks, so it sat on my drill press, undisturbed. I went back to use it a few days ago, and though I clamped down my pieces tightly (but not over-tight, I do know better) I noticed a bit of slop in my work results after two holes weren't aligned as they should've been. I checked every bolt holding down the workpiece, the table to the drill platform, the platform to the drill post, and the drill head/bit itself for excessive play... couldn't find anything amiss, so I snugged everything back and tried to continue. What happened next is the reason this isn't getting a 5 star review... I got maybe 2mm deep into my next hole (using appropriate bits for aluminum, and the press, and yes I was using cutting oil) and the workpiece flew out of the table between my arm and ribs, landing somewhere in the back of my garage. When this happened, of course there was no longer anything between the dill bit and the table so now the table is gouged. After I got assessed the situation I tried putting a few small wooden blocks on the table, and tested the holding power of the clamp set with a little hand rotation on the secured blocks- they gave. I tried tightening them a little more, and they still slipped out from under the clamp. As best as I can tell, the clamping parts are prone to warping *just enough* to allow for play under load, even a very light load (my drill press bogs down easily, and I go sloooooowly with my feed, except when I yank myself back to avoid ballistic workpieces). So, I've gathered up what came with it, and am attempting to return it... If it's accepted without issue, I'll gladly give it another star, because for someone who works strictly with very soft materials and very small scales, it could be useful... though a bit spendy for what it can actually do. I have already ordered what I hope will be a better solution, and will review that once I get to use it a reasonable amount. Update 11/21: Amazon has issued my refund, two days after calling and one day after pickup. If you're working with soft materials, need a small slide table, and don't mind DIYing a solution to secure your pieces then this will work fairly well. ... show more

  • It can be used to mill an 80% AR lower with a drill press
I have a relatively inexpensive drill press that I purchased from a Menards store in Carmel, Indiana, about 15 years ago but I was needing a milling table to attach to the press for milling out an 80% lower AR made of cast aluminum. I pursued some reading concerning the mill work that was required to turn an 80% lower into 100% and it looked like I needed a table that was adjustable down to fractions of a millimeter. When I received the Micro Compound table I realized that the AR lower barely fit on the table; however, I figured out that I could lock down one end by passing through the magazine slot and tightening the AR lower to the table with the use of a 1/4" drive ratchet (10mm socket) and extension and locking down the other end as in the instructions that came with the compound table: problem solved. I actually locked the custom milling jig (for the AR lower) to the table using the pass through bolts in the jig as attachment points. I made my own separate jig to bolt the Proxxon 27100 to the drill press table and locked the drill press table at 0 degrees. The Z axis on a drill press is adjusted by cranking the press table up or down but make sure the table is locked in position well after cranking or the press table will twist when the bit is engaged and beginning to mill aluminum - my left thumb nail learned a hard lesson. Note that drill presses are made to function vertically, not horizontally, so I did most of the cuts moving the end cutting milling bit vertically (treating it sort of like a drill bit) then finished up the edges by taking very small increments at a time (~0.1 mm) moving the bit laterally through the metal with the rotating edge always moving toward the metal for a smooth finish. I only had to tighten the set screws once to reduce play in the table. I won't admit how much time I put into milling out the 80% lower over the last month. However, now I have a fully functional AR lower which I began to assemble successfully yesterday. The Proxxon 27100 table worked well for this project. It will function even better for me next time now that I understand how to use it properly. ... show more

  • Y-axis shift is stiff and jerky.
Y-axis shift is stiff and jerky, not sure if this is with all of these or just the one i purchased, but since I'm reviewing the one i purchased it has to be 3 stars.
