  • Great Value!
Color: Classic Black
Okay, for starters, I just love the name and logo! I know that’s superficial and doesn’t affect how I play, but in a world of bland, monotonous paddles, ‘Primal Birds’ rocks! That alone is not enough to merit five-stars, but the quality and performance of the paddle definitely pushes it near the top of the class. I really enjoy playing with this paddle (I went with ‘Classic Black’). It feels great in the hand, very comfortable and well-balanced. It provides very good power, control, and spin. Is it the best in these areas? No, but It still plays very well and at this price point, it’s exceptional. The included paddle cover is a nice plus as well. I’d highly recommend this paddle to the individual who started with a beginner level paddle and is now ready for a much better paddle but doesn’t want to spend top dollar for a larger name brand. This paddle would be a very solid upgrade. A few final notes: First, be sure to check the size in the “About this item” section. The different colored paddles actually have slightly different dimensions (even though the “Size” information suggests otherwise). Some paddles are a little longer and narrower; others are a bit wider and shorter, so choose accordingly. Also note that different colors/sizes are priced differently as well. Secondly, in late 2023 I notice some hefty discounts have been applied. For example, the ‘Classic Black’ paddle I received is currently reduced by 50%. For a paddle of this quality, this is an incredible value. This is a very good value even at full price. I daresay, you’d be hard pressed to find a better paddle or value at the currently discounted price ... show more

  • Solid choice for intermediate player
Color: Classic Black
The PrimalBirds Pickleball Paddle Carbon Fiber Surface (Classic Black model) is a nice entry into the paddle market from this newer pickleball gear company. It is really important that you read the descriptions for each of their paddles; while they are listed as "colors" on Amazon, they are actually different models with different characteristics. The Classic Black model is what the manufacturer calls a "power" paddle. Truth be told, I probably should have opted for the white paddle ("control" series), as I am not much of a power player. That being said, here's what I love and don't love about this paddle: PROS: * Big sweet spot - it's a very forgiving paddle in that your placement doesn't have to be super exact to make a decent shot. Very seldom do you get that sad, dull "thud" from hitting a dead spot. * Decent spin - I am lucky if I can return a ball, but my expert pickleball playing friend did a test drive with this paddle and was able to get wicked top spin, though it is a very different paddle from what he normally plays with so it took a little while for him to figure it out. * Beautiful presentation - both the paddle itself and its packaging are sleek and beautiful. You just feel like a better player holding this paddle. * Some dampening - this is a good compromise between the paddles that give tons of feedback and the ones that completely absorb all the shock. CONS: * Weight - this is probably the biggest drawback for me. Coming in at a little over 8 oz, this is a heavier paddle than I am used to, and I feel the weight at the top of the paddle more than I'd like. Some people prefer that, and if you're one of those people, this is the paddle for you. * Grip - the grip is actually great, but it's got more girth than other paddles I've tried, and it's just a tad bit big for me. It is probably not a problem for someone with larger hands. Cue your Seinfeld man-hands joke here. * Surface - I prefer a paddle face with slightly more texture. The face of this paddle mostly feels smooth. I don't have great skill yet, and a more grippy texture on the face gives me a better chance of achieving some kind of spin. ... show more

  • Can't believe this paddle isn't more expensive!
Color: Black
From the moment you open the Amazon box the pride PrimalBirds takes in their products is evident. The sleek, branded packaging feels so high end. That white background with silver branding? Quite exquisite! The carefully bubble wrapped paddle, packaged in a smooth opaque plastic bag with the neoprene cover and two grips (one black, one white)? Just oozing luxury!! I don't know that I've ever been that impressed with a company's product, untested, at unboxing/first sight before. It was a nice experience, and surprise, and definitely made me more excited to try the paddle. Upon testing it out, I think the paddle is a great value for money. It has a nice weight to it and I didn't find it too heavy. I actually felt it was easier to swing and play with since it has a longer handle (5.9 inches) than most and I have a two handed backhand. The surface was gritty enough to allow for good spin and overall I really enjoyed using it. I lent it to a few other people who have $100+ paddles and they felt the PrimalBirds paddle was pretty comparable. I'm just hoping that the paddle will be durable and, honestly, even if it doesn't last as long as the more expensive ones, for this price point (under $50), I could just buy another. ... show more

  • Great Paddle but somewhat Lacking in Quality of Carbon Surface
Color: Classic Black
Both my fiancé and I have used this paddle multiple times and it has become a top choice out of 5 other similar priced models. First- It has more surface area than our other elongated paddle. We appreciate the amount of sweet spots it has and find it more forgiving than all others on mishits. We also do not feel the vibration on our wrist on returning harder drives coming at you. For me it is a favorite at the net for dinks and slams. My fiancé a former collegiate tennis player finds it to be most enhancing for her forehand power and also her 2 handed back hand game. Cons- The biggest is lack of a textured raw carbon fibre surface. One of our other paddles at a lower price point has this and we find it significantly more effective creating spin. Priced currently at $99.99 is a lil steep but a 20% discount would represent a decent value.... note: I'm not docking any stars but seems as of now it doesn't have USAPA approval... 4.3 of 5 stars ... show more
