  • Amazing Substrate
Product arrived very compact and sealed up tight. I placed it in a large tub with about 5 gallons of water to start and let it sit over night. It was easy to breakup the next morning and I only had to add a small amount of water to get the last little bit hydrated. It holds humidity amazingly and my danger noodles seem very happy with it. Will be purchasing again. ... show more

  • Perhaps not as expandy as claimed, but otherwise pretty good
I am reviewing Repti360 brand coconut chip substrate block, which at the time of this review was $21.99 for a 10lb block. Having used a similar product before in the garden, coconut coir, I wanted to try this out for similar use in order to add more 'bulky' components in my soil mixes. As with a coco coir brick, this is pretty tricky to get out of the bag, but if you hack away at it for a bit it'll start coming loose. Or just throw the whole thing in a wheelbarrow or rubbermaid container and get it all wet at once. I do like the variety of sizes of the chunks, which will meet my needs. A couple of issues, though. The product is advertised as "100% natural coconut husk, free from dust, dirt, and harmful additives. " However, I found strips of black plastic inside the brick. Not a *huge* deal, but certainly made me second guess using this for my original purpose. Also, I didn't get nearly the expansion that was expected based on the 72 quart (18 gallon) claim. It expanded a little, but not that much! ... show more

  • Good for plants, good price
Great for plants, to help chunkify a mix. It does absorb water, so may not be the best for succulents or cacti, but I have used it for orchids. Time will tell how they like it, but it makes a nice chunky airy mix that drains fast but also maintains some moisture. I feel like it will make a humid environment around the roots which orchids like. I tend to underwater my orchids, so I am excited about this substrate. It is compressed, adding water will help plump it up. The block is easy to break off pieces if you just need a bit. For reptiles, this could be used to help increase the humidity in certain spots of the tank, or the whole tank if needed. Price is good; this is about the price of the coco coir that's more broken up for a block this size. Much better than peat, so for me it is worth the extra cost. Not only is coco coir using a by product and making something usable, it is an excellent substitute for peat. Despite what companies say, peat is not eco-friendly, nor renewable. It can take 1000 years to make an inch of peat, and that isn't even considering the habitat loss. ... show more
