I like to do my own car repairs whenever I can - it's fun, saves money, and is satisfying. My cars are generally newer, so the repairs these days have been few and far between. But my daughter bought a 20 year old Ford pickup truck and getting this street legal and back on the road has become a family project. I have a great high-end multimeter that I use for a variety of other projects around the house (and sometimes at work), but I wanted a basic separate unit that's sufficient to handle work on my cars -- and my daughter's truck. This automotive "multi-function drive tester" fits the bill perfectly. It's solidly built and feels like it should hold up for years. The included wires are quite long, and long enough in fact so that I can have the clips on the battery terminals up front and bring the tester around to the back of the car (or truck) to test the circuit by the tail lights. Nice! In this respect, it's outdoing my other "professional" multimeter, as I simply don't have probes for that one with wires anywhere near that long. The product is perfect for the purpose. While it doesn't have a lot of other functions like my big multimeter does (e.g., capacitance), it has what you need for work on a car or truck. 90% of the time you'll be checking either polarity or continuity, and that's exactly what this tester is designed to do. It's great that you can use it to test grounding polarity, and the warning circuitry helps protect you if there's a surprise voltage beyond 36V - although frankly you should never see that in a car or truck. The vast majority of the time you'll be dealing with 12V. The battery terminal clamps are well-sprung -- easy to open, and hold on effectively to the battery terminals. The digital display is nice (and easier to read than on my fancy multimeter!). The skinny pointy probe is great for reaching into lightbulb sockets, switches that are still installed in place, and your fuse panel. It took me a bit of time to read and re-read the included manual. While it's thorough and nicely printed, I suggest that some help with improving the translation to English would make it even better. But frankly with a bit of time and patience, it's not hard at all to figure out the included instructions. But I can imagine this being a bit of a challenge for some folks. Improving on this translation would push my rating up to 5. Overall - I really like this product. It will wind up with a long-term "home" in my car trunk (or my daughter's truck glove box!), as that's where we'll be using it.
