This little electric hotplate is very useful for making small amounts of hot water, coffee, tea, etc. I've been using it daily for a few weeks to make my morning and afternoon coffee ("Greek" or "Turkish" stye). I'm still learning to adapt from using a gas flame to this electric hotplate, and so far the process is almost but not quite as good as with a flame. But that's a unique use. For making hot water, warming up soup or something else, the hotplate works fine. The overall construction is adequate. The small size means that the entire unit becomes fairly hot while being used. The only place it can be safely touched is the very narrow black plastic at the base. This is where the little temperature control wheel is located. So using the wheel to adjust the temperature while the hotplate is already heated up must be done very carefully to avoid the hot surfaces. The hotplate initially gave off smoke during the first one or two uses. It no longer smokes, but still after many uses gives off a mild but noticeable chemical odor when hot. This is from the hot plate materials, not anything I've spilled on it. There's no documentation of the types of materials used, or of the unit meeting any known manufacturing or safety standards. I would not use this unit for anything but heating small amounts of water, beverages or food. The included instructions warn to not use a pot wider than the hotplate - meaning it's not to be used with a large pot that would hold very much. Still, because it's a handy little unit, and where I live electricity is MUCH cheaper (and cleaner) to use than gas for cooking, I'm going to continue using this hotplate and see how long it lasts. There are several similar models offered at similar prices, so comparison shopping is advisable when considering a purchase. ... show more

This mini hot plate is very functional! For first use, it did emit a smell, but I expect that of new heating appliances. I put it on setting 5 and it boiled water in a flask, so it can really heat up if you need it to. On the lower settings, you can warm things up or maintain heat. You will have to experiment with it to find your favorite settings for you needs. I was very pleased with the hot plate. It heated up fast and boiled the water quickly too. So a couple of housekeeping items in this review. First, this hot plate is small. Like the size of a coffee cup. Second, it's about 3" off the surface with a small footprint. It gets very hot very fast and I feel like it's very limited in what you may want to cook or heat on it's surface because it's so small, it would be fairly easy to knock a hot pot off the surface and this could be bad. Ok, as far as the operation of it. Fairly straight forward. The dial has a 1-5 scale. No idea what temps for each but that's fine. It heats up fast. Turn it off and remove the pan and it's difficult to tell it's still hot. Needs a very visible hot plate indicator. Does it work? Sure. Does it work well, eh.. I suppose. Are there concerns about the size and lack of safety elements? Yep. But if you aren't concerned with any of that, this does heat fast and it does work fairly well. ... show more

This heating plate is small in size, however it is tall so perhaps not suitable for tall kettles. The heating process seems to be on and off once reached the temperature. I used this for my 120ml Mika Pot and had to wait for a while before coffee was made. This would be a good item for use in hotel or dorm as the wattage is low. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. This is a very basic budget electric stove that justifies it's existence with the price it is going for, $17 at the time of this review. For this price its good and makes no extraordinary claims. It gets really hot withing minutes, puts out a lot of heat on max setting, and looks like a basic camping gear quality item. It doesn't look as nice in a real life as it does on the pictures, but then at $17 it looks as good as one could expect! Be aware it puts out a lot of smoke for the first 10-15 minutes. The smoke is not as visible on the video but it did smoke the entire kitchen. The seller did provide a warning in the description so we weren't surprised when it started doing it as soon as it got hot. I would recommend leaving it outside for 15 min on max setting and then it should be fine. ... show more
