  • Idk who this product is for but it's a funny novelty
Honestly it gets 4 stars for burning rods at this price point. It's not a good welder obviously. It doesn't have enough granularity on amps. You better have scrap in the same thickness for practice first or you're gonna mess up. It's really unwieldy to hold, they should've just done a normal box and stinger. The duty cycle hasn't been an issue but I haven't had to run more than a few dozen inches at a time. Idk who the product is for tho. You have to have good rod control to do anything decent but if you're a good welder you prolly want better. If you're a newb, this is gonna suck. I kinda like it but not cuz it's a great tool to use ... show more

  • Nice For Small Projects, Needs Good Electrical Connections
I checked the maximum amperage using a clamp on meter and it reached 48 amps on my 20 amp circuit when I was using the rods that came with it on the highest setting. All those amps flowing will cause heating and accelerating damage if the connections are poor. You must be very careful where you plug it in. If you use an extension cord, it should be as short as possible and 10 to 14 gauge. I believe that the unit will shut down if it does not get enough voltage, but I did not test that. I was able to make my 20 amp circuit breaker trip by using an oversize rod of 3/32 inch. At maximum setting on the dial, the trip occurred when I had used about 6 inches of the large rod on a continuous bead. The larger rod was difficult to insert. The high amperage is achieved from your 20 or 30 amp circuit because the circuit breaker trips when it gets hot, but cools when you take your finger off the trigger to examine your work or change the rod. If your receptacle gets hot as you weld, you should change it because it will get hotter as you continue to weld and may start a fire. Lots of heat can damage a GFI receptacle so you should confirm that it is still working when you are done welding. The zippered case is nice. I’m impressed with the product. For small projects and careful attention to your power connections, it should serve you well. ... show more

  • Awesome and Awful at the same time
This kit comes with everything you need to start stick welding for the first time. You can go from amazon box to melted metal in 10 minutes with nothing more than a power outlet and some scrap metal. But in order to achieve that at this price point, everything is extremely cheap. The “safety goggles” work. They protect your eyes but are far from great. The included brush to clean off your welds is also functional but only just. It is incredibly easy to use, just pull the trigger and go. At the end of the day this thing works and costs less than $90. The adjustable dial for power works. Turn it down for thinner metal and up for thicker stuff. How much do you turn it? You really just need to guess. For the compact size and weight of this thing, it’s good to have if you just need a welder of your own for a small project or two. It all packs nicely into a small case and you can hide it away in a cabinet or tool box. You don’t need this big bulky cart like with a normal welder. If anything, this is a bit of a novelty item but it does work. If you really want to get into welding, save your money and get something better when you can afford it. At the end of the day, I really can’t find anything critically wrong with this for the price point. It works as advertised. ... show more

  • This little welder punches above it's weight.
I picked this portable welder up for my father in law to use on home renovation projects, and it has been great for him. He has used it to weld brackets for shelving, fix metal supports, and add reinforcement to a couple of door frames. The first thing he noticed was the weight. It feels more like carrying a small toolbox than a traditional welder, so he can climb a ladder or work overhead without feeling worn out. For a weekend DIYer in his 70s, that helps him work longer and more comfortably. He is not a professional welder, so the simple current dial is a big help. He started on the lower settings for thin metal so he would not burn holes in what he was repairing, then bumped it up when he moved to thicker pieces. Plug it into a regular outlet, set the level, and he is welding in minutes. Since the kit already comes with rods, a basic helmet, and a carrying case, he did not have to buy extra gear before getting started. For light to medium home projects where you want something easy to carry and easy to control, this little welder punches above it's weight. ... show more

  • Takes a little getting used to
It's nice and compact with the case that it comes with. It comes with a handheld shield and sunglasses style auto darkening, or it has goggle strap to change the glasses style to the goggles. It takes some getting used to holding the whole welder in your hand versus a welding stick lead. But it does work extremely well, because I cranked the am page way up and burnt through some quarter inch angle iron at the end of the weld. It is super easy to use; you just have to remember to pull the trigger and strike it on the metal to get it to arc. ... show more
