  • Simple, lightweight and Functional. Liked better than the Watchdog unit.
Pattern Name: 30 Amp EMS Style: Portable
I bought this for my 24 foot Sprinter-based class B+ Motorhome. It was between this one and Hughes watchdog unit. Both cut the power when there is a problem. This one is a lot lighter, and does not have an annoying “bulldog” light on at night. I think it is quicker to recover too if it trips due to a higher load such as running the AC and Microwave at the same time. The trade off is that the watchdog has a Bluetooth app so you can monitor from your phone. I usually go for iPhone connectivity, but in this case it is complexity which is not needed. The display shows the amp draw which is handy. Any problems are displayed with an error code, and I keep the quick reference in the compartment near the connection, just in case. It has a nice locking point for a cable. I use a cheap bicycle cable to keep it from walking off at the campsite. Very happy. ... show more

  • It Works Well and Provides Total Protection, but Can Be Difficult to Install
Pattern Name: 50 Amp EMS w/ Remote Display Style: Hardwired
I installed this in my RV two weeks ago and it is working well. The unit is smaller than I expected (certainly smaller than the Surge Guard hardwired surge suppressor) and this presents a few potential advantages and drawbacks. On the plus side it has a small footprint, important for my RV. The remote display also takes up very little space and, with the long data cable provided, is easily attached to a convenient place in your compartment. Mine is attached with velcro next to my compartment door opening. On the minus side it is a bit harder to get the input and output cables properly attached to lugs that are have slightly smaller openings than the Surge Guard. It is especially difficult to get the output wires through the two current coils, attached to the lugs, the lid screwed down. I found it easier to attach my cables before installing the unit. One of the features I really like is the bypass switch on the remote display. If the unit fails you can bypass it using this switch. Given the choice of an internal or external surge suppressor I chose internal to make it theft proof. I don't think the external Progressive Industries unit provides enough anti-theft security. This also as a problem with the external Surge Guard, but less so if you add their lock box. Progressive Industries offers a lifetime warranty and excellent support. Surge Guard also has good support but a limited warranty. The EMS-HW50C also provides total protection. I didn't compare this to the Surge Guard specs, so they may or may not be the same. Progressive Industries is also less expensive. I replaced the Surge Guard transfer switch on my previous RV with an upgraded model with surge protection and it worked fine. The Surge Guard transfer switch on my current RV does not include that level of protection and the manufacturer recommended adding a separate surge protector to the system. Both Surge Guards on my previous RV developed a loud and objectionable hum which Surge Guard says is normal and not covered under warranty. I don't know if that will happen with the EMS-HW50C, but the contactor is made by a different company. Should you add high end surge protection to your RV? You may never need it, but then again you might. I have stayed in two RV park sites that had miswired pedestals and several where pedestals were being repaired. ... show more

  • 8 campgrounds so far, Works as advertised.
Pattern Name: 30 Amp EMS Style: Portable
I'll start by saying I have limited experience. I've only used this one time on my first camping trip after purchasing my first travel trailer. Here is my experience and thoughts. It arrived on time and worked exactly as described. Although I did not have any electrical issues for the safety features to kick in, I believe they would if the situation warranted it since everything else operated as expected. When I plugged it in and applied power to it, I received all the indications the users manual stated I would received for a good power source. I am not an electrician, but I can follow the users manual (which is easy to understand) to see that it was working properly and I had good power. I really like that the display cycles thru volts, amps, frequency (i think it did frequency but I'm not 100% sure), and the error code (if any). The Amps indication helped me figure out which loads I could run together so I didn't overload the breaker and lose power. Basically to use the microwave I have to temporarily turn off the AC/Heat. My first night at the camp ground it was raining heavily and the plastic cover on the front kept out rain water. I did not lock it, but it has a metal tab on it near the top where you can lock it using a cable or chain if desired. I probably will use that in the future. Since this is my first RV surge protector I bought I don't know if the price was good or not. All in all I think it was a good purchase. I am happy with my EMS-PT30X and feel confident that my travel trailer is electrically protected. I'll update as we use it more. Update#1: I’ve used this now at 8 campgrounds across 7 states. It’s worked well every time. When I hook it up I also install a metal chain with a couple pad locks to deter theft. Easy peasy. So far so good! I recommend it. Update#2: Had my first error code. I overloaded the breaker by running the microwave while other things were running. My fault. It tripped power off to the RV, then shortly restored power automatically. It gave me the PE4 error code on the unit which basically meant I overloaded it (had to search on the internet for the error code). The error code (most recent if you have multiple) stays in the rotation of information that cycles thru on the display. So it did what was advertised! Yay! I'm still happy with my purchase. Update#3 Three years later and it’s still working great. I only use it at the campgrounds. At home I know my powers good so I keep it stored in the camper. Update#4 Five years later and it still works. Probably cost alot more $$$ now post COVID - much like everything else. ... show more
