  • A DIYer's Handy All-in-One Tool
Color: Red
Product title at the time of review: Portable Rechargeable 5-in-1 Fiber Optic Cable Tester with Optical Power Meter, Cable Finder, Visual Fault Locator & RJ45 Network Test, SC/FC/ST Universal Interface with LC Adapter As a DIYer who's done a fair bit of home networking, home theater wiring, and even some light fiber work extending my garage setup to a workshop (mostly single-mode), I recently picked up this BoltBlaze Portable Rechargeable 5-in-1 Fiber Optic Cable Tester to help troubleshoot and verify my growing fiber connections without hauling pro-grade gear. Right out of the box, I like how compact and lightweight it is, fits easily in my tool bag alongside my multimeter and cable crimpers. The red color makes it easy to spot, and the built-in rechargeable battery (USB-C charging, nice modern touch) lasts plenty long for a weekend's worth of testing without needing a recharge mid-project. The 5-in-1 features really shine for someone like me who isn't a full-time telecom tech but wants reliable tools: * Optical Power Meter (OPM): Covers the 10 common wavelengths. The -70 to +10 dBm range handles everything from weak signals to hot transmitters. Accuracy seems solid (±0.2 dB claimed), and switching between dBm and mW is handy when I'm comparing loss budgets. I used it to check attenuation on a new 100 ft single-mode run - quickly confirmed low loss end-to-end. * Visual Fault Locator (VFL): The 15 km range is overkill for my home/short-run projects, but the red laser is bright and clearly shows breaks, bad splices, or macrobends through the jacket on visible fiber. Great for quick continuity checks. * RJ45 Network Tester: This is a bonus I didn't expect but love. It verifies Ethernet cable pinouts (straight-through, crossover), detects shorts/opens, and does basic length/continuity. Saved me time when I was running CAT6 alongside fiber. Quickly ruled out bad terminations without grabbing a separate tool. * Cable Finder/Sender: Useful for tracing cables in walls or bundles. The tone generator works decently with a basic probe (not included, but I have one). Not Fluke-level sensitivity, but for DIY tracing in a house or small outbuilding, it gets the job done. * LED Flashlight: Small but surprisingly bright, handy in dark crawlspaces or behind racks. Pros from a DIY perspective: * One-tool-does-it-all convenience, no juggling separate VFL, OPM, and cable tester. * Universal SC/FC/ST interfaces + LC adapter included = no hunting for extra couplers on the weekend. * Rechargeable and portable, beats battery-eating disposables. * Intuitive interface (from what I can tell, no manual needed for basics). * Good value for the multi-function capability if you're doing any serious home fiber (FTTH extensions, security cams over fiber, etc.). Minor gripes: * The build feels decent (plastic but sturdy), but it's not ruggedized like $300+ meters, treat it carefully around job sites or ladders. * No advanced features like auto-wavelength detection or full certification reporting, but that's expected at this price point and not something most DIYers need. * The cable finder works okay but isn't super precise in very noisy environments, fine for home use though. Overall, if you're a DIYer dipping into fiber optics (home lab, media room, extending network to outbuildings), this is a smart, affordable all-in-one tester that punches above its weight. It replaced three separate cheap tools for me and made troubleshooting way faster. Ssolid 4.5/5 stars for home/project use. Highly recommended if fiber is part of your projects! ... show more

  • Portable tester that helped me out with a client's cabling
Color: Red
If you are not familiar with Amazon Vine, it is basically Amazon trading free* products for honest reviews. You see a lot of Vine reviews that are cookie cutter and based on templates. I aim to make my reviews honest and non-cookie cutter (other than this intro and disclaimer). * These items are not actually free as Vine members pay income tax on the items they receive. Therefore, I will never order something from Vine unless I actually intend to use it. I think this is important for readers to understand because it means I will never order an item just to provide a fake five star review to a company. If I review something as good, it means I actually enjoyed using it or it fills its intended purpose correctly. Items that don't meet my expectations will be reviewed accordingly. Why I ordered this item: I needed to test three cables at a jobsite and didn't want to rent a tester for the day. This seemed like a good option to have on hand for next time too. Likes: * I used the optical power meter to check signal strength on two of the cables and the RJ45 tester on the third one. Having everything in one device beat dragging around multiple testers. * The size is perfect for throwing in a tool bag. It's not bulky, which matters to me when I'm moving around a jobsite. * The display is easy to read even in bright sunlight. I was worried about that going in, but the backlight adjustment made it simple to see what I was looking at regardless of the lighting. * Accuracy seems spot-on. The measurements came back consistent when I tested the same cable a few times, and the readings made sense compared to what I expected based on the cable runs. * It's built like it can take a hit. Drop-resistant matters when you're working in the field, and I already banged it into my truck once by accident with no functinoality issues. No likes: * Battery life could be longer. It gets you through a day of work, but if you're doing extended testing or leaving it on, you're charging it that night. Would I pay full price for this product: Yes Final thoughts: I grabbed this to solve a specific problem and it handled the job without any hiccups. Now I have a tester that works and is ready to use instead of renting one next time I need one. ... show more
