  • I Like These Speakers I Like These Speakers
Style: Large Tower Speaker (XT70)
What I can't tell you - I can't compare these speakers to a 2or 3 thousand dollar set of speakers. I have never had speakers that expensive and even much more in my home. I have heard them in a specialty store but not at home. They will sound different in the studio than at home. I do know the higher class speakers have beautifully constructed cabinets, well damped inside and higher quality components. What I can tell you - These speakers do look nice even though they are not made of fine woods and have rounded or beveled edges. In fact I have seen some brands of tower speakers that cost 3 times as much as these speakers and they have the same basic square edge construction on the outside. I think these speaker look impressive for the money. Ok, the grille is not magnetic but it is secure and looks very nice. The connection posts on the back are very nice. They added a nice touch to the base even though it is just cosmetic. Now on to the sound. I have these speakers hooked up to a brand new 80 watts per channel Yamaha amplifier (not receiver), a brand new Cambridge CD player, a brand new Andover Spindeck Max Turntable, and a high resolution streamer. I am using a new Klipsch 10 inch subwoofer all items purchased through Amazon. I am only using this system for stereo music. The highs from these speakers are very crisp and clear. The mid sound is warm and robust. The lows are very adequate but can come nowhere near to what a dedicated subwoofer can produce. I knew this going in which is why I wanted the subwoofer. Overall I am totally pleased with the music these towers produce and the 80 watt amp drives them beautifully and they can get quite loud without distortion unless you go nuts and over drive them to the extreme. Now would a 2 or 3 thousand dollar pair of towers out perform them? I would say yes. But the big question is does the 2 or 3 thousand dollar set give you a 2 or 3 thousand dollar performance increase? I would venture to say they are better but not thousands better. Of course this is my opinion and I am not an audiophile, but I have listened to different systems all of my life and I do know what sounds good and what does not. I have heard some crappy systems. I am sure an expert might hear or not hear things I should hear but again, I am totally pleased with the sound these speakers produce and I don't give a flying fig if they are missing a little detail. ... show more

  • Great sound, but inaccurate measurements Great sound, but inaccurate measurements
Style: Large Tower Speaker (XT70)
I bought two XT70s and an XT30 center. These won't win style points. They have a very basic design (sharp edges and corners, a vinyl-like coating, and cheap speaker covers), but they sound great once burned-in. If there's no risk of damaging the speakers themselves, pop those covers off and show a little color. These speakers need to be burned-in because they sounded stiff and, quite frankly, kinda meh. Give them time (we did between 20-30 hours of different genres of music to get as much range as possible) at around 75-85 decibels. Metallica to Reba, Flo Rida to Celine Dion, Brooks & Dunn to Run DMC. Once burned in, they sound great. The more you use them, the better they'll sound. At first, I thought the left tweeter busted because there was a crackling sound off to the left during Underworld Awakening, but a few seconds later, the camera panned to the left and showed a guy welding off-camera. It was crystal clear. I attached a pic comparing the sizes of one of the front speakers that came with the original system, one of the upgraded ones (which sounds great in its own right), and the XT70. The passive drivers don't push as much as they should, so a subwoofer will help with the lack of base from the towers. Paired with a decent sub (we have an 8" sub) and they will rattle your walls. Now, Polk's claimed measurements are deceptive. The Dynamic Balance woofers are not 6.5 inches, and the passive bass radiators are not 8 inches. The woofers are, however, 6.5 inches from one edge of their FRAME to the other; the radiators are 8 inches from one edge of their FRAME to the other. The woofers are 5 inches from the outer edges of the rubber, and the radiators are 7.25 inches from the outer edges of the rubber. Very deceptive, so be aware. Despite the deceptive measurement claims, I can't see any towers in the same price range being better than these. Amazing bang for the buck. I'll give 5 stars for performance, but the design isn't impressive, and the inaccurate measurements irritate me. ... show more

  • Great sounding speaker
Style: Large Tower Speaker (XT70)
Review: Polk Monitor XT70 Large Tower Speaker The Polk Monitor XT70 is a powerful and impressive large tower speaker that delivers outstanding audio performance. Designed with meticulous attention to detail, this speaker is a standout in both aesthetics and functionality. With its sleek design and high-quality construction, it easily blends into any home theater or audio setup. One of the most remarkable features of the Polk Monitor XT70 is its ability to produce rich and immersive sound. Equipped with two 6.5-inch bi-laminate composite dynamic balance drivers, it delivers deep and punchy bass with exceptional clarity. The midrange and high-frequency response are equally impressive, thanks to the 1-inch silk dome tweeter, which produces detailed and accurate sound reproduction. The overall sound signature of the XT70 is well-balanced, allowing you to enjoy a wide range of music genres and movie soundtracks with great accuracy and depth. Whether you're listening to delicate orchestral pieces or rocking out to heavy metal, this speaker can handle it all with ease. Another aspect that sets the Polk Monitor XT70 apart is its versatility. It can be used as a standalone stereo speaker system or integrated into a larger home theater setup. With its dual gold-plated 5-way binding posts, it offers easy connectivity options, allowing you to connect it to a variety of audio devices. The speaker also has a sensitivity rating of 90 dB, ensuring that it can deliver robust and dynamic sound even with lower-powered amplifiers. In terms of build quality, the Polk Monitor XT70 is outstanding. The cabinet is made of high-quality MDF material, which helps reduce resonance and unwanted vibrations, resulting in cleaner sound reproduction. One minor drawback of the Polk Monitor XT70 is its size. As a large tower speaker, it requires ample space and may not be suitable for smaller rooms or apartments. However, if you have the room to accommodate it, you'll be rewarded with its exceptional audio performance. Overall, the Polk Monitor XT70 is a top-notch tower speaker that delivers excellent sound quality, versatility, and stylish design. Whether you're an audiophile seeking immersive music experiences or a movie enthusiast looking for a cinematic audio setup, this speaker is a fantastic choice. With its powerful performance and attention to detail, the Polk Monitor XT70 is sure to elevate your audio enjoyment to new heights. ... show more

  • Great upgrade option starting point
Style: Large Tower Speaker (XT70)
Very happy with the sound quality that come out of these for the price. The cabinet is solidly built and they look nice however I would prefer a wood laminate finish over the vinyl covering these have. One area of improvement greatly needed is the grill frames, they are very flemsy and could easily break if you aren't careful with removing them or moving the speakers around. I believe the bases are also made out of the same MDF as the boxes however solid wood/ plywood would make for better durability and less worry when moving around. ... show more

  • Resonable priced clarity
Style: Large Tower Speaker (XT70)
First impression Sounds smooth and full, paired with a Yamaha As 501 amp. Tons of low end and clarity. Feed them clean and they will perform. Plenty of volume to fill a 14x14 room. Sound smooth and pleasing to my ears without being shrill .

  • Good sounding and powerful speakers! Good sounding and powerful speakers!
Style: Large Tower Speaker (XT70)
I am using these as the main front Left/Right speakers in an Onkyo 9.2 setup. These things have POWER! I am no audiophile, but they sound great to me. My only complaint was that when I received the pair, one of the boxes looked like it had been run into with a forklift. The speaker inside escaped most of the damage - except for the included speaker grill. This had one side that was broken in half. I contacted AMAZON and got a run around requesting a replacement speaker. Amazon wanted to refund me for it and have me order again. I caught these on sale and they were almost twice what I had payed for them. Amazon gave me a partial refund for the damages. I ended up contacting Polk and they were able to send me a replacement grill. I am still annoyed at AMAZON for this, but Polk is spotless in my eyes. ... show more

  • Very nice upgrade Very nice upgrade
Style: Large Tower Speaker (XT70)
I needed to upgraded my front surround sound speakers since my old Polk Audio satellite speakers were a little outdated. The old ones still play like a champ after 15+ years. I decided to go with the XT70 since I had already purchased the XT35 center speaker and XT90 height speakers.I upgraded these a year ago. These XT70 speakers are definitely a huge upgrade to my old speakers. The clarity I hear compared to my old system is night and day. The added bass they produce makes movies seem more full. I am still using the old Polk Audio satellite speakers for my rear surround, which I will upgrade eventually to the XT20. I'm running this off of a Pioneer VSX-935 7.2 channel 8k/4k receiver which puts out 80 watts per channel at 8 ohm. Overall I am very impressed with these tower speakers. Definitely worth the price. ... show more
