  • Though a small sub, it seems to get the job done
Style: Single Pattern: Subwoofer
This is a pretty old subwoofer model from Polk, and it’s almost the smallest I could find in size from a reputation brand. I like it because it has High Level Input and Outputs and many newer models don’t. In terms of sound quality, since the driver is only an 8”, so don’t expect super deep bass but it should give you a nice complement on the lower frequency spectrum. I mostly listen to jazz and soft music so this sub works great for me to supplement some natural bass which my Klipsch RB-51II can’t deliver. Price wise, after so many years of production I think it’s a little bit overpriced for the size and what it could deliver, but if you like the points I mentioned above with similar applications, you can’t go wrong with this little sub. ... show more

  • Polk Audio PSW111
Style: Single Pattern: Subwoofer
UPDATE: 4yrs, 9mos in the future! I'm still using this sub daily, and I still recommend it (see end of review for extra info). I researched subs online for a month, and then finally decided on Polk's PSW111. I have since owned the PSW111 for 2 months; and thus far it has been great, working perfectly with my 5.1 surround sound system. I use it every day for at least 8 hours, listening to music and playing Xbox 360 games. The gun fire and explosions in Call of Duty 4 are made much more intense with the bass produced by the PSW111! I bought this sub because my Klipsch [sub] burnt out, and I had to go with NO bass for 9 long months! ...When I finally hooked up the PSW111 and heard the bass, I was so thoroughly pleased :D The sub isn't magnetically shielded, so I have to keep it away from most of my other electronics; but that's not a problem - because most subs are not shielded. I spent $50 on a gold plated-6" Monster cable, kinda funny since the sub itself only cost $200 (NOTE: I do NOT recommend buying expensive cables, because even cheap-o cables are equally good & effective). I live in a small apt, and it fits perfectly. I have the bass set at 1/2 power, and it is perfect for my ears. If you are a person who lives alone in a big house, this sub should still do you just fine, because maxing out the dial on the sub will create a room-shattering amount of bass. However, I'm not sure keeping the sub at max would be a good idea in the long term; for the life of the sub, but I'm no expert. Pros: + The sub is small, sexy looking and pretty damn powerful. + Built very solid, no rattling, no boomy sound whatsoever. + Xbox 360 games sound ridiculously amazing with the PSW111. Cons: - The PSW111 costs slightly more than its bigger 10" cousin. - Not magnetically shielded (but not many subs are so who cares). - It weighs more then it looks like it should, so I suppose that's kinda a positive thing! Conclusion: If you're looking for a small-sized, but still very powerful subwoofer, then this sub is HIGHLY recommended! I myself am a videophile, but I can attest that the PSW111 will please all you audiophiles. I recommend this product! UPDATE: October 2013, I'm just 3 months shy of using this sub for 5 years, and I still use it daily, and I still HIGHLY recommend it! It's a really well-rounded subwoofer, and was obviously built to last. My only regret was that I was a noob 4yrs ago and spent $50 on a Monster cable (go to monoprice(DOT)com if you want affordable cables)! ... show more

  • Nice sound, reliability not so much
Style: Single Pattern: Subwoofer
Update 1/22/2020: Not sure what brought me back to update this post 4 years later, but here I am. I guess I just want to say that after replacing the caps that Alex details in his blog (link in the comments), the sub has worked longer than the original (1.5 years) and the replacement I received under warranty (2 years). Why do they make this product with such inferior capacitors? And the caps I purchased from Digikey as replacements only cost a few bucks. I am positive I will never purchase, or recommend, another Polk product with the knowledge that they use cheap components in their products just to save pennies, only to gouge their customers by charging outrageous shipping and replacement fees for defects that are obviously due to their cheapness. Oh, and the competitor's product that I bought to replace the second failed Polk sub is still working well 4 years later without any issues whatsoever. That sub and the repaired Polk sub (capacitors replaced by me) have been used in a dual sub setup for almost 4 years and both are still going strong. Go figure. Original Post: This was a fairly decent subwoofer, while it worked. I liked the small footprint and the sound was nice. I would give it at least 3, maybe 4 stars for sound but its reliability and Polk customer support bring it down to 2 stars. After a year and a half it started to produce a steady thumping sound sort of like a heartbeat, even without it connected to the receiver. I contacted Polk support and they said the amplifier was blown and since it was within the 3 year warranty they said they would send a replacement amp if I sent in just the amplifier backplate. It cost about $12 to ship it to them, and they sent a replacement pretty quick. The replacement they sent arrived with a connector that was broken off, so I sent that one back and got another amplifier plate in return. The second one worked great for around 2 years. After about two years it started to emit that same steady thumping sound as the original one. I contacted Polk support again and got a rude response this time. Since it was now outside of the 3 year warranty (1.5 years for the first one + 2 years for the second one), they wouldn't do anything to help except offer to sell me a refurbished amplifier plate for the same price as a brand new subwoofer, only the refurbed part would have just a one year warranty. I was able to find a complete refurbished subwoofer direct from Polk on ebay for less than what they wanted for just the amplifier plate. It really doesn't make sense to me why customer support wouldn't do more to make one of their customers happy instead of just trying to gouge them. It's their product that keeps failing and I don't think it's asking too much to expect the amplifier to last more than two years. The short of it is that while it was a nice sounding subwoofer, I figure whatever components they are using for the amp only have about a 2 year lifespan. I would have gotten another one of these subwoofers because it did sound really nice and I loved the small footprint, but after the way Polk support handled the second situation and the fact that this subwoofer's amp keeps dying after a year and a half to two years of service, I didn't want take another chance. I got a great deal on another brand's 10" subwoofer on Black Friday this year to replace it. Who knows, maybe that one will crap out after two years too, but as of now it sounds just as nice as the Polk sub but was 10 bucks cheaper. ... show more
