  • The best e-reader I've used
I use this device exclusively for files I manage with Calibre, and it works perfectly. I've put a dozen books through it, and the battery has only depleted 18%, which is a massive improvement over my previous Nook device. It has the best library sorting options I've seen, and the software is responsive and easy to use. The color looks very good, and text is nice and sharp, but if you only want black and white I would go for the non-color version as the Kaleido screen is relatively dark and has a faintly visible grid for the color layers. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the backlight, it is very blue and cannot be set as dim as I would like it to be in most situations, so I leave it off. Pros: -Excellent software -Color screen -Phenomenal battery life -Excellent library sorting options -SD card slot -Excellent format support -USB-C Cons: -Screen is darker than modern black & white screens and has a faintly visible grid -Frontlight has only one color, is very blue, and cannot be set as low as on a Nook or Kindle. ... show more

  • Not perfect, but not bad at all.
Not a bad reader by any stretch of the imagination, & for reading plain text, it's at least as clear and crisp as any other e-paper device. The operating system could have been a little better designed for my taste though. It leans towards displaying the cover images and I'd have liked a way to just display a long list of titles, (Think Calibre & you'll get the idea), - this is mainly because I have such a large collection of books. The colors are a little washed out, but it's definitely an improvement on previous color e-paper displays. So for comics it's great, but doesn't quite reach the clarity of PDF's on maybe an ipad screen or similar. I'm confused as to what another reviewer says about adjusting these colors, as I've been through the manual and settings with a toothcomb and nowhere does it actually mention, or have, a setting for doing this. The only thing close to it, is a self calibration toggle, but you just activate this, and it adjusts itself. I must assume the reference refers to the older e-paper color display. I love the inclusion of a microSD slot, which makes a huge difference to the media you can load into this device. It plays music and audiobooks with ease, either through bluetooth or a usb/3.5mm socket adaptor, (included). The bluetooth connection seems pretty stable. Loading books btw, is as easy as creating a directory via windows explorer and dropping books in. The device does the rest. It's compatible with the open source ebook program Calibre, and this is my preferred way of loading books. As far as I can see, the only format it doesn't seem to support is AZW/AZW3. All in all, this is a capable reader. ... show more

  • An underhyped gem among eink readers.
Got it so I could read both Comics and conventional books. The color on eink is decent. Screen realestate at 7.8 " is the right spot between smaller 6"/7" and larger 10.5". There will always be the debate between getting one of these vs an OLED screen from a proper tablet. Only few redeeming factors vs a proper tablet is battery life and ease of it on the eyes. So plan accordingly before buying. ... show more

  • Painful to use: like using Fire Tablet after Oasis
The first unit could not power on and could not charge. Sent it back for replacement. The second unit works. A bit background. I am coming off Kindle Oasis 2 which battery started to degrade and because it is water proof of course is not replaceable. First impression, despite having only 4096 colors, it does still make a difference. For older geeks, it is like going from monochromatic screen to Amiga 500. Yes, it could be 16.7M but we are not there yet. 100 dpi on color is very noticeable but it is limitation of the technology and not Pocketbook's fault. So what's the issue with this unit: SOFTWARE Despite what the manufacturer says, it is SEVERELY underpowered. Their claim that it runs LINUX and it needs only 2 cores it is a big boloney. Try to delete multiple books: PAINFUL Try to adjust font of the book: PAINFUL and a lot of times it ends up in a blank screen Turning pages is LAGGY but survivable Basically anything that has to do with navigation is very PAINFUl. Search: PAINFUL Accessing read menu: PAINFUL and inconsistent. HARDWARE: I do like the size 7.8 inches. Lack of button on the side is OK but I would prefer buttons like in Kindle/Inkbook etc. I do like the weight. I do like SD Card My number one issue is that uneven light bleed on the top of the screen. You can also see each individual lights when you look from the side. It looks very amateurish in comparison to Kindle. You would think that the company that has been around for the last 10 years would figure it that out. Also ambient light detection works very poorly. I woke up 6AM and I wanted to read something. It did turn on in the dark and the lowest light setting. I could not see anything, had to reboot the device. So what should Pocketbook do in the next version - Add octacore processor - Add better backlight that does not bleed - Add custom fonts - Add inverted screen/dark mode - Add physical buttons on the side - Fix ambient light detection - Fix accessing read menu because it often triggers highlight. Swipe down would be better. But number one, you are charging a massive premium on the device. Get feedback from people that use these devices 24/7. It takes 10 minutes to figure out that this product is not good. Also GoodEReader gave it 4.5 stars out of 5. I know the guy has a vested interest in selling devices but this is just flat out disingenuous. BOTTOM LINE: This device is like going from Amazon Kindle Oasis to Amazon Fire Tablet. If you ever used it, you know how painful that Fire Table is. I don't recommend it. Sorry for any typos, English is my 3rd language. Hope it helps. ... show more
