I’m a new convert from the world of Kindles. I’ve been buying and using Kindle e-readers for almost 15 years and I’ve gotten slowly more and more disenchanted with the experience. When they discontinued the Oasis, I finally had to search elsewhere. I wanted something with good, unobtrusive, tactile physical buttons, a front light with adjustable warmth, and USB-C. Ideally, I also wanted something that would handle PDFs and epubs with more ease than my Kindles have in the past. This was the winner and I couldn’t be more satisfied! Battery life is great, it’s snappy and responsive, the size and weight are perfect, the construction feels premium, and it does everything I want it to. Setup was a breeze, and I was absolutely FLOORED that I didn’t have to make an account or anything! When was the last time you were able to use a new electronic device without having to set up some kind of stupid account?!     • For when you migrate back to e-ink devices....
I purchased this to replace a missing original Kobo (refurbished) e-reader. I wanted something backlit, wifi/usb-c connectivity and multi format file support. This seems to fit the bill...calibre recognized it. I downloaded a book from Project Gutenberg site with it over wifi. Screen touch nav is fully customizeable. Leaving the backlight on will sap the battery. I purchased a used like new example, and am not disappointed at all. The extra screen real estate is nice as is the assemetric design. I was initially planning to use koreader on this but after two days of non stop reading I think it's ok as it is. Huzzah for Pocketbook! ... show more

The pocketbook era is a nice product. The software is a little slow, but the page turns are really fast. It seems like it take a couple seconds longer to start up or navigate the settings than other ereaders I have used. Under certain lighting conditions other reviewers have mentioned that on the side with the page turn buttons the screen is a little dimmer than the other side. I notice this occurs with the smartlight when I am using it in a dark room. Otherwise I don't notice it. And if I didn't know it was there I may not have noticed it at all. This unit replaced my barely more than a year old Paperwhite Signature Edition. Yeah, I have had to convert to ePub, but I love this reader. In many ways it is superior to my long dead Kindle Oasis and at a much better price. It even has speakers for my audiobooks if I want. I am very happy with this purchase. This is my first day with the device and I am very pleased. This is my first PocketBook device and I've determined to keep up with their releases from now on, which seem to be one device per year. Sturdy and attractive design. PC connection and side loading simple and easy with Windows 8.1. The lighting is pleasing. Very responsive. Love it. Everything I hoped it would be. Screen is similar to the Touch HD3 except bigger. For those who say font is not bright enough, simply use a different font. The script is perfect.     • Horrible to navigate
First comes in some foreign language that you have to try and navigate to English. Then you have no clue in the store how to find the audiobooks. I have no idea how to use anyone elses. There are no Utubes out to help you use the thing. I am sending it back. It literally to difficult to navigate. It is very light however but not much room to hold it while reading without touching the screen. I bought this for someone to use the audio that has hearing aides and they are handicapped.     • Excellent features, but with mediocre lighting and slow speeds.
This device is probably the most premium ereader out there still using a black and white screen. The new color screens are darker and grainier. This screen is fantastic, the screen is a little worse than the 12th gen paper white with contrast, but just barely. The build is very nice, solid, thin, reminds me of the final oasis model. The page turn buttons are great too. Lots of customization options. You can setup almost everything the way you want it. With cloud support and native epub format support, this thing is super easy to put books on. Now for the negatives. The software isn’t as good as kindles. It’s ok, but sometimes doesn’t recognize screen presses or simply doesn’t open a menu when you try to. The whole interface is laggy. I can’t stress enough how slow it is. Unresponsive UI, takes 3-4 seconds to open a book. Poor scrolling, hard to customize page layout. Menus randomly take seconds to appear, etc. Those used to a snappy Kindle interface will be disappointed. Also the screen lighting isn’t great with lighter and darker spots. This is from two different devices I received. The first had shipping damage. Both screens are fantastic if the light is off, but when it’s on, it’s meh. The contrast is also not great, dark mode is pretty much white text on dark gray background. Can’t do true black. Overall the most premium quality build ereader out there now that Amazon discontinued the Oasis product. But it really needs better lighting, am improved interface and a faster processor. ... show more
