Description

This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase! In this debut feature by writer-director Laura Wandel, the everyday reality of grade school is seen from a child's-eye-view as an obstacle course of degradation and abuse. Following 7-year-old Nora and her big brother Abel, we see Nora struggling to fit in before finding her place on the schoolyard. One day, she notices Abel being bullied by other kids, and though she rushes to protect him by warning their father, Abel forces her to remain silent, while he endures more humiliation and harassment by his peers. Transposing the gritty realism of such filmmakers as Jacques Audiard and the Dardennes Brothers to the inner world of kids, Wandel crafts an empathetic and visceral portrait of the cruelty of children, and the failure of adults to protect them. Shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best International Film.Bonus Features: 1. Bonus Short Film: Les corps étrangers (Foreign Bodies) Directed by Laura Wandel 2. Essay by film critic Rafa Sales Ross

  • Beautiful movie.
Beautiful movie. Well-acted and thoughtful.

  • Brilliant
Playground is a gritty, real look at life at school, from the perspective of seven year old Nora ( who forms a small group of friends), and her older brother who is mercilessly bullied. It almost felt like a documentary, it was so well acted by the child actors. Recommended.

  • Eh!
It has a good story line but the production was not so great. The ending leaves you kind of like….ok where is the rest of the movie? Did they not have enough money to finish the movie????

  • Brilliant film making.
All from a young girl's point of view, the camera shoots from her perspective. She is courageous, loving, moral and real.

  • If you are a school counselor or work in schools, watch this movie!
This is the children’s world that adults may don’t see at school. It is a perfect movie to show the different kind of bullying happening in schools, specially the difference of bullying between boys and girls. Highly recommended to students in Education programs in Universities.

  • A Grim View of Childhood
This is not a cute movie about cute kids having cute adventures at school. It is a very grim picture of the cruelty of children toward each other, a cruelty that adults never recognize, because they live in the adult world. In fact, the original title of this is "Un Monde"---a world, not the ironically innocent "Playground." 7-year old Nora is introduced to bullying, betrayal, derision and, yes, cruelty---you know, the usual. The film is technically a marvel---told in closeups filmed at the level of the kids. The acting is superb. It does have the now obligatory ambiguous and sudden ending---too damn sudden, in my view---promising some level of reconciliation between Nora and her older brother. It needed a long overhead shot of them consoling and holding each other, surrounded by the terrible madness of the other kids. Didn't happen. Still, a good film. Just don't expect anything comfy. ... show more
