what I like about this reel. The drag is smooth as silk. The magnetic free fall works great. The trigger is located correctly. What I don't like. The price is too high. It is difficult to tie the line to the reel. The spool seems to be non-removable without taking the whole thing apart. I did manage to get my line tied by fiddling with it long enough. I then spooled the line up and fed the end of the line through the reel's line guide. Anyway, it worked after some doing. Maybe there is an easier way I did not read the directions. Probably as good or equal to the 13 fishing Black Betty.

I’ve used both the 13 fishing free fall and ICX frost. I gave away the $120 free fall to a friend for reasons when you have used both, you’ll know why! The design of the pacsifun is perfect and thought out. Beautiful and compact. The materials feels expensive. The build quality is above the 13 fishing. The free fall is smooth. The spool is protected from your palm. Line stuck between spool is minimal. One major drawback! The screw cap that screws the reel handle and drag star to the spool is made of plastic. If you break it, you purchasing another reel. Should’ve been made of metal! And that’s why the 4 stars.

I liked the design so much, I bought two initially, and have recently ordered another one. I have limited experience with inline reels, but do own a couple Black Bettys and an Eagle Claw, none of which have the spool release lever. What I like about these, after receiving them, is the spool on the crank side of the reel. I can palm the reel and not affect the drop and use my index finger to guide the line, while using my middle finger to engage the lever. The position and length of the lever is also spot on, for me. My only qualm is the travel required to engage the free-spool, which is about half way. Pencil holders will also like the ergonomic feel of the stem and length.

So I'm writing this on initial impressions of this reel. Spooling is ok...have to watch how you thread back on their small nut that retains the spool. If it's not perfect when it goes back on...you're going to have a bad time. I spooled with 4lb micro ice and it did go on pretty easy and quick. The action of reeling and the drag is very smooth and I give a huge plus on that...as nobody likes a chunky feel to reeling. The issue I have is that this reel is very tight/stiff. Even with the drag backed off and the magnetic drag completely turned down it won't freefall any small tungsten jigs...5mm, 6mm, 7mm (Tried those and wasn't going to waste time testing smaller). Being this is an Ice Fishing reel....freefalling these small jigs is the bread and butter of ice fishing panfish. I have since setup an UL rod with this reel and have a search lure attached (small kastmaster spoon with a jig below) and it will freefall it...all be it slowly...but I would expect it to on any reel. Overall it's a nice inline reel if you didn't want to pay for a "Black Betty"...but I guess I expected a little more from Piscifun on this one.

I ordered a red and blue version of this reel. Both reels were received defective. The first one wouldn’t engage winding right away and the handle just turned without any line retrieve. The second one turned fine but the reeling feel was almost as if some dirt was in the bearings. The triggers are in an awkward location and maybe it’s just me but I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to easily start the process of putting line on. I got it on but it was extremely difficult. I expected more from Piscifun because I have 5 of their spinning reels and they’re all great. So to sum it up, don’t ditch Piscifun, just don’t buy these. Stick with a Carbon X spinning reel instead, it will work just fine for ice fishing.

A few years ago I had never heard of Piscifun as a brand. Now I'm seeing their merchandise advertised regularly and I think they're catching on as a quality brand. They do a great job making sturdy and trustworthy reels for a fair price. These in-line reels are also something new to me. This one is made strong but works delicately enough with very light line as well as some heavier line where it might be necessary. When fishing in deep water I understand how useful these reels are with their magnetic drop systems. I wish I had ordered the Right-Handed model but regardless of this minor inconvenience I'm pleased with what Piscifun delivers in this reel. These types of reels and this brand are not going to get much ( if any) cheaper any time soon and ice-fishing gear is especially pricey. You can rely on the quality of this product but I'd warn anyone who isn't likely to use this reel often to go with something a little cheaper and a lot more versatile the year round.
