My Cat Loves This Fountain: If You Learn Some Tricks, it Lasts

I had purchased another fountain for my previous two cats. But they never got interested. Or maybe I didn't give them a chance. My cat Dinah is always inspecting the faucets so I figured she'd like this. And since the one thing that is sure to shorten cat's lives is kidney disease, and the one thing you can do that makes a difference is make sure they increase their water intake, a fountain that they love to drink out of is obviously hugely important. I'm lucky that my cat really loves this. I can tell it's dirty of the filter needs to be changed when she stops drinking out of it. As for maintenance and the fountain lasting longer, well for one thing, if you get the fountain in your cat likes it and things are going well, I suggest that you get a second. So you can spend some time cleaning the first, letting the electrical parts dry out, putting it through the dishwasher, as I mention below: It says you're supposed to change the filter weekly. I do wait longer because I have one cat. But if you have more than one, either change it weekly or get to two to begin with. After you try it. Is it easy to put together? I would say that for most people, yes. And once I figured it out it became easy. But initially I had a friend help me as I have a hard time with spatial stuff. (Although I am an excellent parallel Parker) my friend did it in two seconds. But she of course slowed down to show me still, when I take it apart to change the filter, I take a photo of it at each stage. Or since I have two, I can just look at the other one. It's crucial to keep it clean. Probably should go in the dishwasher once a month (or so). So again that makes it easier for me to have to fountains because then I can put it together right away using the basin and the swan head from the other box. I don't use the motor or cord because I want to keep that new. If you don't really wash the basin and neck at least every two months it will get gross . I saw someone say that it stopped working after a few months. It probably seemed like that. But often what happens is it's just dirty. OR the cord that connects it to power gets slightly wet and really needs to get dried out. And one case when that happened to me, it was definitely the cord, and I just set it aside for 24 hours and did use the cord from the second fountain. The cord did dry up and it might've taken less than 24 hours, I'm not sure but it works fine now. Also sometimes it doesn't start dripping immediately when you do all of that stuff and plug it in, it's always good to have a little bit of water in there before you plug it in. But when it really doesn't stop after five minutes I assume it's the cord and I change it and let it dry out. Or, the other possibility is that it wasn't put back together properly when the filter was changed. And that's some thing that would happen to me. So you have to remember how it gets put back and the cord has to go through the Swan's head. My guess is there are videos on YouTube So again, if it seems like it's not working, I promise you it probably is not broken. The cord may be wet. It may not have been put back together correctly. It may be dirty inside the Swan's head which really needs to be cleaned in the dishwasher. It probably needs a new filter cause it will get clogged. You probably need to put water in first before turning it on. Just a little. And then you can add more. If you see bugs or things like that in there, it needs a new filter. The basin is going to feel slimy if it's not cleaned often enough. Use filtered water. It will last longer and it's healthier for your pet. Every few days I put some new water in. So rather than dumping it out which is very messy, I put a pot under the spout and I collect water and swap out about half the water in there or even just some of it and I put some fresh water in there. It takes about 72 to 75 Oz to fill the basin full. So I may change out 32 ounces every couple days and then change it all out when I clean it weekly or so. I think it's well worth the money. And if you want to calculate the vet bills that you'll save on its astoundingly worth the money. Get one first. If you like it, get two. Or if you have multiple cats obviously get one first. If you like it, leave two out and get three. ... show more

The stream of water is adjustable!! There is a tiny switch on the motor.
This fountain works well. I was concerned at first because the stream of water was sort of strong and it freaked out my cat (doesn't take much). I wanted to turn the flow down but there was nothing in the instruction book about doing that. I asked the question to the community here on Amazon and every answer said you could not change the flow of water. Well I studied the matter a little more and found a tiny little switch on the motor with a "+" symbol and a "-" symbol. If you move the switch to the minus symbol you restrict the flow of water so that solves the problem. I just wanted to let people know this. My cat is still not drinking out of it as she is used to the faucet in the bathroom. She has gotten to the point where she won't drink water out of a bowl she only wants us to turn the faucet on for her. So we bought this thinking that it looks like a faucet. It's only been a few hours so hopefully she'll use it soon. But I think it's a good product so I'm giving it five stars. UPDATE - It's been 3 days and the cat finally started using it. So hopefully she will like it and continue to use it and stop hanging out on the bathroom vanity. I had the flow turned down as far as it would go. This seemed to cause the stream to splash and make noise and also splash out onto the floor. I decided to try increasing the flow and now it's very quiet and not splashing. Hopefully this won't cause my cat to not like it as much. We'll see. Update - it's been several months now and our cat still likes it. It seemed a little low to the ground for her. So I made a little wooden thing to lift it up higher. She seems to like it even better now. ... show more

Cats love this fountain but it’s loud

Edit to my previous review below: my cats still love this fountain. I do have to clean the filter once a day but I found replacement filters 3/$7. The pump on the other hand is slowly getting less powerful and it trickles loudly. The pump can be cleaned but nothing seems to help. After driving my husband crazy he found a solution to keep it quiet. Find a nice round smooth stone, clean it really well and stick it in the fountain under the stream. Sweet relief from the constant sound of trickling of water. My cat loves to drink from the faucet so I wanted to get a fountain that mimicked the same water flow. He loves this fountain and drinks from it all day. Also nice and big basin to drink from and to float a couple of ice cubes in. It isn’t noisy and the flow is adjustable also it’s easy to clean and has a long power cord. Would highly recommend for cats with kidney disease that need to drink more water. ... show more

Owned for 6 months and Very Satisfied - read my review!!
I'm glad I waited a full 6 months before leaving this review because I've gone through a lot of highs and lows with this fountain and at various points would have given it a much lower rating. I've come to realize that I really didn't understand what was needed to maintain this fountain at its optimal conditions. Now that I understand, the fountain runs like a dream and is absolutely silent without splashing any water. Here are some of the most important things I learned, so hopefully it can help impart faster knowledge to others who are ready to give up on this fountain: 1. Rinsing the fountain and replacing the water daily is good, but doesn't give the fountain the deep cleaning that it needs. 2. Over time, by not cleaning the little parts in the fountain, it affects the amount of water that flows through the fountain. The less water/water pressure that flows through the fountain, the louder the fountain gets. At least weekly, you should take the entire fountain apart including the pump and use a skinny straw brush and push it around in the crevices of the pump and up each end of the skinny spout of the fountain. Trust me, before I started using the straw brush for a deep cleaning, my fountain sounded very loud and splashed the water. There seems to have been some kind of build-up that I couldn't get out until I used the straw brush, which impeded the flow of water 3. Inside the pump is a lever that pushes left or right (open or closed). If your fountain sounds loud and splashes water, make sure this lever is pushed all the way open. 4. Make sure you are filling the fountain with a sufficient amount of water. There is a faint line on the side with the words Low and your water lever should always be above that level. 5. After you take the fountain apart and do a deep cleaning, sometimes when you fill it back up with water and plug it in, it can take 30 seconds or longer for the water flow to start. You'll just hear the motor of the pump until then and you might think the fountain is broken, but give it a little time to start flowing again. 6. Lastly, I do recommend getting the replacement filters and changing them regularly. It helps keep the slime out as well. Hopefully you find these words of advice helpful. I wasn't deep cleaning the right way and as regularly as I should have been and didn't realize that I was causing the loudness and splashing of the water. I was ready to give up on the fountain until I figured out what I was doing wrong and started deep cleaning it properly and more regularly. Now it is absolutely running perfectly and my two cats absolutely love it and both drink out of it daily and play with it with their paws. ... show more

Could be sturdier, but a nice fountain (UPDATE)
My cat is thoroughly spoiled now and greatly prefers drinking from a faucet whenever he can. Since I do worry that he's not getting enough water when not drinking from the fountain, I figured that I would give this a try. Offhand he does seem to like it, but there is some hilarity so far as he's very used to drinking from his old fountain, which has the waterfall in the back. Meaning that he initially stuck his head in the back to get to the water, completely dunking his head under the fountain spout. Where this does fall a little short is in the durability, specifically in that it's remarkably easy to knock over the spout by accident. It's an easy fix and the unit is otherwise pretty durable, but this is a bit annoying at times. The cleaning is a little bit of a pain here in comparison to the other unit I used, as there are more surfaces that need to be cleaned, particularly when it comes to the suction unit. It's harder to get the bits of cat hair out of the unit, although it's certainly not impossible. The only other thing I'd caution people on is that you can't really pick up the filters at your local pet store. You can get them on here, but it's nice to be able to pick them up at your local store. UPDATE: I'm actually removing a star from this for how incredibly easy it is for the spout to come off. I'd mentioned this before and sort of shrugged it off, but after a longer period of use I have to say that it's really irritating. It's light enough that my cat can move it himself (he's a strong kitty) and my boyfriend and I've tripped over this many, many times. The spout always comes off and while I can fix it, it just feels like there should be a way to secure this more easily. As far as the motor goes, it's still chugging away so no issues there. UPDATE2: The motor finally gave up the ghost as of October 2020. I originally purchased this in June 2019 so this was just over a year. Granted we didn't take care of the motor quite as well as we could have (didn't realize some parts could be removed and cleaned) so I'm going to hope that the motor lasts longer this time with better maintenance. Still, the cat absolutely loves this and given that he can be extremely rough on water bowls, this has lasted longer than a couple of others we've purchased. The price is expensive but not so much so that I didn't want to purchase this again and try to see if we can make the motor last longer this time around. To be honest, part of me wishes that I had looked a little better for pump replacements and purchased that since it's cheaper, but at least this way I can start with a whole new setup. Plus the unit is kind of hard to clean properly so this way I know that it's clean and I can try to maintain this better - it really is a work in progress learning how to clean and maintain this type of fountain, since the curved neck makes it harder to really clean well. ... show more

A MUST HAVE for all sink drinking felines

In all the years I’ve been ordering items on amazon, I’ve never written a review. Why? I never had a life changing product to rave about. Now I do. I have a 11 year old tuxedo cat who may be one of the PICKIEST felines you’ve ever encountered. As I’m sure many folks are aware, cats require a ton of water to prevent health issues. When I adopted Teresa, she was on an all dry food diet and would only drink out of the sink and/or bath tub. Naturally, you can’t just keep a sink running unattended so I searched far and wide for a fountain that she would drink out of. Over the past eight years, I’ve tried half a dozen fountains ranging from $20-$75 with no luck. Either she’d use it for a day and lose interest— returning to meowing in the tub or on the sink— or completely ignore the fountain all together. I came across this fountain in March after a routine wellness exam. The vet stressed the importance of Teresa drinking more water as she has kidney disease. I immediately hopped online to see what was on the market and thought I’d give this fountain a shot. My hope was the design would create the same affect as the sink. I swapped out her previous fountain (one of those flower ones) and crossed my fingers. After 3 months with this fountain, I just knew I had to write a review. It took a day or two for her to get comfortable with the new fountain, but she hasn’t jumped in the tub or on the sink ONCE since I bought this for her. She is drinking far more water than ever before!! The moral of the story, if you have a cat who is an avid sink drinker, BUY THIS FOUNTAIN. It truly is a lifesaver. The price point isn’t terrible and the filters aren’t much more costly than filters I’ve used in the past (the filters for this Fountain come in a 3 pack for roughly $10). Assembly was a breeze and took less than 10 minutes. Cleaning is simple as well. I Disassemble and clean the entire fountain at least once every 2 weeks as it is white (she is a black cat) and for peace of mind. At the end of the month, I disassemble the unit (it’s 2 plastic pieces plus the pump), clean and sanitize it. Next, I change out the filter. Lastly, I place the pump in a cup of warm water mixed with a packet of dishwasher cleaner and let it run for 2-5 minutes. This keeps the pump clean and removes any substances that may of gotten trapped inside. It isn’t a large piece nor does it make any noise when filled. As the water begins to run low, it can get nosy but once you fill it back up, it gets quiet again. I do recommend keeping a mat underneath for any spillage. accidents happen and as this is an open design, water can easily spill out and create a mess on your floor. It’s only happened to me twice and both times were my fault, not Teresa’s (klutzy human here). I truly cannot recommend this fountain enough. It has changed both my life and Teresa’s. Don’t waste your money on nicer looking fountains. This may seen basic but it seems to be exactly what cats who like sink water want and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters! ... show more

Don’t give up, it’s probably not broken
This fountain is great, but not until you learn a few key features. At first, it ran like a dream from the second I did the easy assembly and plugged it in. It’s pretty, seemed to stay reasonably clean, even with 2 small dogs using it, and had a perfect flow of water that ran nearly silently until it got low. Then it started to sputter and fritz. And I thought, you know, I bet I should probably clean that thing (ADHD) so I took it apart and the filter was a bit gross, but nothing horrifying, and the was some stuff that had been hiding under the bottom of the spout, but I really couldn’t see what had made it start acting weird. So, thoroughly cleaned I reassembled it and filled it up and plugged it in. I could hear the mirror chugging, but no water flow. Just the occasional tiny dying dolphin sound it kept making. I waited… nothing changed. So I took off the plastic fountain neck & observed the very weak, but seemingly normal volume water output, looked into the spout, saw no blockages, then took the thing apart once more. I fiddled with every part of that thing and could not figure out why it was doing what it was doing. I was just about to call it broken, when I noticed something on the pump that looked like it was made to be moved. It was a little tiny tab around the water output hole that was in a track that allowed me to make the opening larger or smaller. So I made it as large as it would go, reassembled, plugged it in, and Voila! We’re back in business! So, in summary, as long as you: • keep it clean • change the filter regularly • keep plenty of water in it, and • be careful about knocking that tab over while cleaning This thing is awesome, affordable, attractive, and durable. I’ve had it for almost 2 years now, and it’s still going strong. In a perfect world it would be great if: • The manufacturer made different types of filters compatible with the unit, for a variety of contaminants, •made that little tab’s function more obvious, somehow, •maybe gave some kind of detachable leg/stand add on option, •had a nighttime LED option, and • somehow made it easier to detach the pump/filter from the cord or the whole thing from the bowl, I would be into all of those Upgrades, but it’s still really solid for the price point. Worked great! Till it didn't.
Bought this on Prime day and loved it right out of the box. It was silent, reasonably attractive, and despite my cats constantly sticking their heads under the flow (Why are you so wet?!) they really seemed to like it. After a few weeks, I started noticing the complaint that others had where it would not start working right away after plugging it in. Sometimes it would just be a few minutes, sometimes it would take over an hour. I took it apart and cleaned it weekly, and every time I had to plug it back in, the problem would persist. It got worse. After about 3 months - it stopped being silent. The water flow reduced and now there was the sound of running water into a puddle constantly. It was so annoying that I had to unplug it if I was going to be in that room for any length of time. Sometimes plugging it back in will make it quiet again, sometimes not. Cleaning it usually makes it quiet again for a day or two so I'm assuming it's filter related. Maybe new filters would solve the problem? But that's not a problem I want to have to solve every month. I asked my boyfriend a question the other day and he replied "WHAT? I can't hear you over the sound of this terrible purchase!"
