  • It is what it is, but that's not necessarily bad.
Color: Blue
I got one of these because I wanted an alto trombone for recording purposes, purposes which did not justify an outlay of $2000 or more. I have played Jiggs trombones before and felt them adequate for what I had in mind, so getting one of these seemed to be a good plan. (I have no interest in the plague of Chinese imports available.) I will say up front that when mine was delivered there was no mouthpiece in the package. Reaching out to Amazon didn't do any good, although I doubted that they have a stock of pBone mouthpieces in any of their warehouses anyway. I even reached out to the Jiggs people, but I never heard back from them. Given that I expected to replace it with another mouthpiece anyway, it was more of an irritant than anything else. For the record, I got a Denis Wick 10CS for it. The reciever on the pBone is too big for a small-shank mouthpiece and too small for a large-shank, so I doctored the Wick with a layer of gaffer's tape. The tape holds the mouthpiece out of the receiver well enough for it to play in tune while sealing the receiver to avoid leakage. Without the tape the horn blew ridiculously sharp (because the mouthpiece sat way too far into the receiver) and the tuning slide isn't nearly long enough to compensate. Having said that, the Wick gives it a nice voice, light enough to identify it as an alto yet warm enough to blend in with other horns. I have discovered that this trombone is very *un*forgiving of an excess of air pressure. I noticed that if I put the air into it that I would put into my tenor or bass trombones it tends to blow sharp. Radically so in some positions. Treating it as its own instrument as opposed to a very small tenor trombone has helped me get used to the requirements of the horn, giving me much more useable recorded tracks. There seems to be a very fine line between too little air and too much. Finding that "sweet spot" gives it its own voice, which, for a piece of plastic, is actually very agreeable. I am going to graduate to a brass alto at some point, but until then I can use this in my studio. It really does blend in well with my other horns and gives me a high part with the "authority" I was seeking for the ensemble. ... show more

  • Me likey!
Color: Blue
I'm a multi instrumentalist, but never have gotten into brass instruments. when the pbone mini arrived, it's cardboard box felt like it was empty! It's that lightweight, easily carried by a 5yrs old's pinkie, without breaking a sweat. I got the blue one, because i found it less intrusive. i know they make them for kids, but i would have preferred a white, yellow, orange, or black one instead. I never have played any brass instrument before, and the last trumpet i blew through, it sounded like a cow mooing... This trombone out of the box was great to learn the base octaves on. I've learned embouchure in one day, and was able to form a relatively steady tone within the first 1.5 hours of arrival of the instrument (granted, i have some skills I took from saxophone). I found that the second and especially third octave was much harder to play. By default, the instrument is not very loud, but I've been able to get some brassy sounds out of it that would be loud enough to play in a band; though playing that loud would be torture on the lips. the higher the notes, the harder it is to get the volume evened out with the lower notes. It's not an easy instrument, and sometimes the note drops a 5th or 6th note when sliding, probably due to my bad embouchure control. I haven't tried another mouthpiece on it yet, than the stock one, but the stock one works somewhat ok... All in all its a fun way to start playing the trombone, but I would recommend to start with the full size for adults instead. It doesn't come with grease, and chain lube doesn't work very well on it. Out of the box, i think the mini could use some grease, as there is some resistance felt when sliding. It comes with gigbag, plastic mouthpiece that sounds ok, and instruction manual on how to install the 3 pieces. Please take in consideration that though I am a multi instrumentalist, I know next to nothing of playing the trombone. i wrote my review as a complete leek, and can't compare to other trombones about the quality of sound, playability, or volume you can get out of it. It sounds ok to me, though a little thin in the mid register. The build quality seems pretty ok to me. At least, it doesn't look like cheap Chinese plastic to me. My only regret is not having purchased the larger version to begin with. ... show more

  • Awesome for kids, well-designed, some slotting and intonation issues
Color: Red
I bought this as a toy for my nearly-three-year-old (and myself, actually). We have great fun watching the NY Phil trombone section on YouTube together while she motions along. Occasionally she will ask for the "red trombone", and we put it together, I show her how to hold it (until she demands to do it her way), and she tries some blowing and buzzing. It is definitely size-appropriate for her, but she is a tad young to handle anything gently, and although it is sturdy, you still have to take care that the metal stockings don't get dinged or bent or the inner slide damaged when the slide is fully extended. Someone really put a lot of thought into the design and construction. Since the instrument is so light, there is no need to screw down a sleeve to lock the bell to the slide. Just plug them together and you're good to go. The mouthpiece, though, is made of light, brittle plastic. I found some cracks in it (possibly my own doing). I would suggest making it a little heavier or more elastic, and maybe a bit deeper and more open. Other reviewers seem to just use a small bore tenor mouthpiece. It comes with a gig bag, which is handy but lacks any interior straps or zippers for securing the mouthpiece and slide. The slotting of the partials is weak, with some intonation problems. The slide is not bad considering it's plastic on plastic, and the action is improving with wear, although I'm not quite comfortable, especially out in 6th or 7th position. I'm thrilled that this thing exists. I hope Jiggs will continue to refine it. ... show more
