  • no time series charts and bogus event detection with "malfunctioning" PRV
This is supposed to be a copycat of the Sense energy monitor for water pressure data, but its event detection is completely bogus and there are no time series charts of pressure data and no integrations with others devices like Flume that could easily improve accuracy. It's an expensive pressure gauge that you can only monitor in realtime and only from an iPhone app. I hope they do something useful some day with the data they are getting from me because they are not letting me access it. But, I am not holding my breath. ... show more

  • Give us time series charts!
I bought this product as a means to detect pinhole leaks with its highly accurate pressure measurement. A few drops per minute over the course of weeks can cause a lot of damage to hardwood floors (unfortunately a statement I make from past experience). I installed the product, simulated a pinhole leak of a few drops per minute, and looking at the plot of the extended duration leak test, the difference is easily measurable relative to my house's baseline pressure drop (without the simulated leak). So mission accomplished, this meets the need and I'm happy. The water usage estimation is also nice. It's not perfect at identifying the type of appliance, but I never expected it to be because that's a really hard problem and not really necessary if all you want is some analytics on how much water is used. What I'd love to see is the time series data for measured pressure. I don't need hand holding, just give me a plot for an arbitrary duration, like Sense. ... show more

  • Not quite sure...
So far, I’m not sure if the Phyn will work for us. Upon initial installation, it did not find a PRV, but we definitely have one. Still testing, but will update this once we know more.

  • Simply doesn’t do what it’s supposed to
I have lots of smart devices in my house but this one would not work and tech support was extremely unhelpful. I would NOT recommend.

  • PRV, or no PRV: that is the question for this beta-quality system.
Success or failure with this Phyn Smart Water Assistant greatly depends on whether your house’s plumbing includes a pressure regulating valve (PRV). My 30-year-old house lacks a PRV, and a previous owner’s basement-finishing choices necessitate cutting walls open to install a PRV and its associated plumbing. That’s not happening unless the basement gets remodeled. Nevertheless, I took a chance on this device because Phyn says it works without a PRV. I found that claim, at best, to be very optimistic. The hardware installation was easy, but Phyn’s app presented the most painful “smart home” setup process I’ve ever experienced. Phyn requires text verification of your phone number, but the app kept rejecting the PIN it sent to me. Workaround: force-restart the app and click login instead of signup. Then, during WiFi setup, the app replied “Invalid QR Code” whether scanning the device’s QR or typing the code printed under it. Workaround: join my phone to Phyn’s temporary WiFi hotspot. Next, the app forced a “PRV Check” regardless of answering yes/no to a PRV being equipped. That check always failed with an unhelpful “Something went wrong” message. Workaround: bypass the PRV Check by indicating a well water supply, then correct the plumbing type later in settings. So, after that awful setup experience, does this Smart Water Assistant actually work without a PRV? Three weeks in, I sadly must say no. With training thru the app, the device has made some inconsistent progress at identifying different fixtures in my house, but its water consumption estimates might as well be random numbers, considering how wildly-inaccurate they are. The much bigger problem, however, is that Phyn can’t differentiate between water pressure changes happening in my house vs. those triggered by neighboring households. This is where having a PRV would make all the difference. Every day, Phyn reports many false water usage events (probably from neighbors) while simultaneously ignoring real events happening in my house. Toilet flushes, my whole-house humidifier, and even showers often go unreported by this device. There’s no way to improve the situation, as the app doesn’t accept any feedback regarding missed events, false-positive events, or incorrect water consumption estimates. The only input possible is to associate purported water events with fixtures in your house. Phyn says that the training process takes a long time (especially without a PRV), but without any mechanism to correct the false and missing events, the learning progress seems to have hit a wall. Overall, I’ve found this Smart Water Assistant to produce unreliable results without a PRV, and its extremely limited training capabilities give little reason for hope. The numerous false-positive and missing water events mean that I simply can’t trust any of the reporting or alerts being generated by this device. In my view, Phyn is doing a major disservice by saying that this product “works best with a PRV” because the practical reality is that a PRV is very much required for usable results with this beta-quality system. ... show more

  • Did Not Work for Me
After receiving the Phyn Smart Water Assistant, I plugged its power adapter into the garbage disposal outlet under my kitchen sink only to discover that the outlet was at the end of a switched loop. There was no power at the outlet unless the garbage disposal switch was turned on. I had to hire an electrician to install a new circuit. After a several-week delay waiting for the electrician to show up, I moved to the next step in the installation process that called for linking the Phyn cell phone app to the Phyn Smart Water Assistant device. Using the most recent app version, I created a Phyn account and proceeded with the app linking process. The QR code on the bottom of my Phyn Leak Detector and the QR code number that I manually entered were both deemed to be invalid. The app then gave me the option to continue without those entries. After connecting my cell phone to the internal Phyn Wi-Fi, I discovered that the Phyn Smart Water Assistant would not detect my router’s Wi-Fi. It’s a network connection that is readily recognized by every other device ever introduced to it. Removing the Phyn from power and rebooting the Phyn’s telephone app, I went back through the device connection routine only to experience the same result. The realization then hit me; I had gotten a defective product. By this time, I was so angry with this Phyn Smart Water Assistant that I disconnected everything and re-boxed it. Unfortunately, I was past the 30-day return window. Going to the Phyn website. I found that there is no warranty information for the Phyn Smart Water Assistant product. The Phyn Smart Water Assistant product description promised a lot but it didn’t deliver for me. Something in this price range should be quality control tested before shipping it out to retailers. If you’re considering getting this leak detection device, make sure that you have the proper electrical circuitry under your sink before ordering it. With that out of the way, you can get the installation done while the device is still within the 30-day return window. ... show more
