  • Requires firmware updates
Good quality build. The internal speakers are decent enough for quiet listening, so I wouldn't use them if there's any other background noise in the room. The turntable itself is really bouncy and springy, so when I'm wiping records with a cleaner and I apply any pressure, it scrapes the plate against the bottom (the plate, not the record itself). More importantly, mine shipped with a software defect. Some records would mute in the middle of quieter parts of the music. I thought it was a bad unit, but with some online research I learned that the fix is a firmware update via the Phillips Entertainment mobile app. I found it frustrating that it ships like that, and judging on forum posts this issue has been around for months. After the firmware fix, I got a cheap RCA to optical adapter to play on my soundbar, which sounds far better than the little speakers. My only complaints are that the top cover has a large gap when closed, so it doesn't prevent any dust from getting in. Also the volume knob has no tactile feedback or stops, so you can't tell how loud it's set before playing. It's my first turntable I've owned, (though I've used my Dad's forever) so I figured this one would be good mid-level entry for me. Anyway, my kid loves it. There's just something special about watching it spinning and the needle moving that gives a different perspective on music listening. ... show more

  • Solid Build Quality, but a Clunky User Experience Holds It Back Solid Build Quality, but a Clunky User Experience Holds It Back
At Full Retail Price ($300): ⭐⭐2 out of 5 stars On Sale ($200): ⭐⭐⭐✬ 3.5 out of 5 stars As an all-in-one turntable, the Philips "The Stevie" presents a bit of a mixed bag. At its core, it is a mechanically competent record player wrapped in a genuinely solid, sturdy chassis. However, at a retail price point of nearly $300, a record player needs to deliver more than just good structural build quality—it needs to offer a seamless user experience. Unfortunately, that is where this unit stumbles. The Setup and Light Display Issues The biggest drawback of this turntable is the clunky user interface. The control system relies on a series of light, color-coded functions and a legend in the manual and above the knob of what each light means. In execution, the specific colors chosen for the different modes are far too visually similar to one another. Below the text codes, only the blue light truly stands out; the rest blend, making it incredibly annoying to tell what mode the player is actually set to. Furthermore, getting the player fully optimized requires you to download the proprietary Philips companion app to update the device's firmware. Dealing with app setups and forced firmware updates just to get a record player running properly is a hassle that I don't appreciate. Audio and Connectivity If you decide to ignore the app altogether, the player functions well enough on its own. The Built-In Speakers: They are acceptable, but they won't blow you away. The audio is okay for casual, small-room listening, but it lacks the rich depth you might expect from a system in this price tier. Bluetooth Performance: This is the unit's saving grace. The two-way Bluetooth works incredibly well. It connects to a smartphone in literally seconds to stream music through the internal speakers, and it seamlessly pairs outward to external wireless speakers or headphones if you want to upgrade your sound. Mechanically, the turntable spins and plays vinyl records reasonably well, and the physical unit feels like it was built solidly. The build is by no means heavy, but not flimsy either. But the sheer "weirdness" of the interface and the hassle of the software setup create an unnecessarily messy user experience. If you can catch this unit on sale for around $200, it earns a 3-3.5 stars as a stylish, almost mid-level player. However, if you are paying the full $300 retail price, the frustrating interface flaws make it hard to recommend over more user-friendly hi-fi alternatives, dragging it down to a flat 2 stars. ... show more

  • Better than others with speakers build in, but not great either.
Not bad, better than others I've seen or tried at this price point. Bluetooth works great, speakers are better than normal compared to other similar products from other companies, but they still aren't great. But if you want that traditional sound, these are a good option. Don't regret the purchase at $199 on sale, not sure I would pay more, I think if Philips spent a bit more to make this better, materials, weighted arm needle etc. they would have hit a home run and it would have been worthy of a higher price point. ... show more
