  • The best bulbs I've used so far - great color, fantastic brightness.
Color: Daylight Size: 6 Count (Pack of 1) Style: 100-Watt Equivalent
I purchased the six-pack of bulbs to act as backups in case my other (cheaper) LED bulbs went south. However, I had some fluorescent lights go out in the garage, so I decided to pop these into the secondary sockets that were available, and I was impressed with both their light output, and the color spectrum they produced. I am extra-sensitive to blue light, and most LED bulbs claiming to be 5000k have a distinct near-UV output to go along with their fat mid-spectrum white light (this also makes all inexpensive 6000k lights appear flat-out blue to my eyes). Unfortunately, this is unavoidable, since LEDs only produce UV light, and require phosphors and filters to output anything else. These Philips bulbs have the lowest (but by no means zero) high-blue, near-UV output of every bulb in the class. Now, as to heat, and why you shouldn't put these in an enclosed lighting fixture, unless it has ample venting. 14w isn't a lot of power to pull, and 14w of heat output isn't all that much to sink away. The difficulty comes with the design and construction of the bulb and driver circuitry. The dome of the bulb is a frosted plastic that helps scatter the light, but the body is a big flute of aluminum surrounding the driver circuitry, and attached to the LED array via thermal glue and set screws. This fluted body is entirely sealed, which means that whatever heat doesn't get sinked out via the body, gets trapped inside the cavity with the driver circuit. It's a simple circuit, bust even simple circuits can get fried once you go much over 100ºC. 14w over time without any cooling airflow can and will absolutely bake the circuits inside, causing the entire light to fail. You need at least good convection current flowing across the bulb base to prevent these from going pop. As for the driver circuitry, it's very simple, with a very nice silk-screened PCB, and mid-market capacitors from YMIN. Nothing fancy or expensive, but also not the absolute cheapest pile of parts you would find in the budget bulbs. The voltage-in leg of the PCB is fused as well, so if you get a power spike, it'll blow the fuse instead of cause a fire - a feature lacking from many cheap bulbs out there (I've dismantled about half of the distinct brands available). After seeing the internal construction of these, I believe that the "out of box" failures are likely bulbs that took a nasty drop during shipping, breaking the input leads. In summary: I like these bulbs enough that I'm slowly replacing all of the bargain clones with these. If you aren't terribly bothered by near-UV light, the cheaper bulbs will likely get you where you want to go in terms of brightness. If, like me, you're sensitive to near-UV/UV light, then Philips has the best option for your eyes, and is worth the extra couple bucks per bulb (at the time of this review, individual bulbs were just under $8/ea, while 4-6 packs of bulbs were under $5/ea and $4/ea, respectively). ... show more

  • THE BEST QUALITY LED BULBS. TRUST PHILIPS ONLY
Color: Daylight Size: 6 Count (Pack of 1) Style: 100-Watt Equivalent
These are the best quality LED bulbs I have ever had. The bright 100 Watt equivalent in 5000k daylight are not available in stores, only online orders on Amazon and Home Depot, etc. I specifically like the 5000k bright white daylight over the soft white. It is like sunlight. I use them indoors everywhere, as well as outdoors around the house for security. I leave the outdoor lights on day and night so as not to forget to turn them on at night. They are a great deterrent to burglars. I did buy Philips 60 Watt equivalent soft white dusk to dawn bulbs which have a light sensor turning the bulbs on and off automatically, however I prefer the daylight bright white 5000k color of light and the brighter 100 watt equivalent bulb which Philips does not make in a dusk to dawn. I have suggested that they do as these would be excellent outdoor security lights. Even so, I leave these 100 watt equivalent daylight 5000k bulbs on all the time outside. They only use 14 watts of energy so that is 10 kilowatt hours per month per bulb if left on continuously. My electricity cost is 13 cents per kilowatt hour, so leaving one of these bulbs on outdoors constantly for security costs $1.30 per month. These bulbs are excellent as well as philips dusk to dawn bulbs which I have tried and which work well (again a less bright 60 watt equivalent soft white/yellow light bulb). If you decide on a dusk to dawn bulb, I urge you to choose Philips only, as others (from their reviews) fail early and frequently. I believe in Philips quality. The company makes excellent products. ... show more

  • A really well put together bulb with great warm white color.
Color: Soft White Size: 6 Count (Pack of 1) Style: 100-Watt Equivalent
Yup, these things are bright and the color is great! I'm a LED light aficionado and I'm super picky about LED. I care about color temp, flicker, heat dissipation, dimmer compatibility, etc. The good: 1. A really fantastic even color temperature. I think these lights are using the latest generation sapphire LED elements because the color is a brilliant warm white, not that awful dead cool white of early generation bulbs from 3 to 5 years ago. 2. Good shape with good heat dissipation. I'm not too worried about putting these in my sconces or in my glass domes. The bases don't get hot and they don't bulge. This is a nice design package. 3. The bulbs intelligently turn themselves off when exposed to a dimmer. I like to try these things out just for giggles. I have a few brands of electronic and analog dimmers in my home. In each socket, these bulbs saw when they were getting a chopped sine wave (dimmer) and shut themselves down to prevent damage. As soon as I put the dimmer back to full, the bulbs came back on. Pretty cool! The bad: Honestly, I haven't found bad yet. And that's a hard thing for me to say because I pride myself on finding the bad. ... show more

  • Choose Your Color Wisely
Color: Daylight Size: 6 Count (Pack of 1) Style: 100-Watt Equivalent
The product description refers to the light color as "Daylight". While this is technically true, it would be better described as "The Cold, Hard, Naked Light of Day". The only time I've experience daylight like this is in the context of too many margaritas the night before, or under the influence of a migraine headache. If you want a bulb that will reveal every particle of dust or imperfection in the plaster, or that will cast your popcorn texture or stucco into surreal and brilliant high relief, the "Daylight" color is the one for you. If you do not, in fact, prefer to see your environment as through the lens of a microscope, you will wish to choose the "Soft White" option. That said, this is an excellent bulb. It's much lighter (in weight and heft) than the previous generation of LED bulbs, and offers proper 360-degree lighting, just like incandescent bulbs. In fact, this bulb looks and acts much like a traditional incandescent bulb, and is suitable for use in lamps, overhead fixtures, and places where the bulb will actually be exposed to view. ... show more
