  • It's decent for smaller room sizes
This is a good soundbar that works for smaller room sizes. Think apartments, or bedrooms, and this should fill those room sizes with adequate sound that is more pronounced, and more enjoyable than the outputs of most built-in TV speaker systems. In a larger room (which I tried first), at the maximum volume may give you some throw, but it will not fill the whole room evenly. With that out of the way, it's not a bad value for its price as long as you plan accordingly to your use case and room size. If you have a fancy OLED TV with decent speakers - this setup may not add much to what you already have, but it does make for a good solution to add some oomph to your sound with clarity in the highs, more established lows, and better projection of voices in dialog, however it does not do too much in the area of adding to your mids. There is no HDMI cable included, so you may need an HDMI cable to connect to your ARC capable HDMI port. There is an included remote and batteries, and if your TV has bluetooth, you can also connect without additional cables using your TV's bluetooth setting. This also means you can easily connect other bluetooth devices such as your phone. Setup is a breeze, making this sound bar an overall good solution given the right circumstances. ... show more

  • Great Sound Bar, Terrible Instructions
Guys I am tech savvy, okay? I can set the clock on any kitchen appliance, I can use computer operating systems that aren’t Windows. I understand these things. If Philips could have just given me like two more words for pairing the subwoofer, that’s all I needed. It’s all just pictograms, which is fine except you hook both devices up and they’re flashing white lights. The instructions just say ‘solid white’. That’s it, that’s all it says. Not ‘tap button and lights will turn solid’, not ‘hold pair button until light turns solid white’, just…solid white. So I pressed the button, nothing happened. I checked the sound bar, the light was flashing over the Bluetooth logo, so that was probably right. I gave the button a longer press, like three seconds? Nothing happened. I waited, pairing can take a minute, nothing. Okay, I’ll hold the button. I held the button. Solid white. Wonderful. I understand we are trying to save money where we can, but that’s ridiculous. ‘Hold button until solid white’, that’s it, just say that. Anyway. Looks nice enough, sounds great. Subwoofer adds a little punch, I like that it’s wireless so you can put it wherever. If you hook up to HDMI ARC you can control with your TV’s remote, which is great because I don’t like the remote that came with it at all. You can also hang it if you want, but my TV is right over a shelf of sorts so no problem. Recommended for sure, just remember: solid white. ... show more

  • Disappointing performance from such a big name.
Most people aren't going to be satisfied with the sound quality from your average flatscreen TV nowadays. Not that stock speakers have ever been anything to shout about in the last 40+ years, but expectations have shifted quite a bit. "Back in my day" the average television contained a single speaker that was completely sufficient to be able to listen to news broadcasts, watch cartoons (on saturday morning), and hear all of the dialog while watching a movie. As surround sound and the concept of "home theater" started gaining traction in the 90's, speakers got bigger and it was common to have multiple sound channels and speakers hung all over the walls. Fast-forward to today and you'll find most households simplifying their entertainment setups, compared to years past. This is where a soundbar makes sense. It's significantly better than stock speakers, but cheaper and easier to use than full surround systems. This 2.1 soundbar, by Philips, is definitely an upgrade over the tiny speakers you'll find in you're average flatscreen, nowadays. The wireless, powered sub is a neat concept giving placement options you simply don't have with a wired setup. I found the audio to be plenty sufficient for casual use watching daytime TV and occasional movie night. This will satisfy the average user, but I feel it's going to fall flat for individuals that expect a little more performance in the special effects area to make movies, music, and video games more realistic and immersive. The only input is HDMI. Optical connectivity would be nice, since my TV has an optical out, but in this case, it left me with a single option that requires an HDMI splitter so I can run video to the TV and audio to the soundbar. Not a big deal, but it's not exactly plug & play out of the box for older flatscreens that lack HDMI-ARC. Bluetooth is available if you don't have a stereo in your living space and just want to stream from your phone, but again, I've had better performance from small JBL "pill" style bluetooth speakers. The main selling point here is the Roku TV capability. Apparently, when paired to a Roku television, you can control the soundbar with the remote from your TV. I don't have a Roku TV, so I can't speak on the. Functionality in this area. That being said, less remotes are always a good thing. Overall, I was disappointed in this soundbar. From the packaging, to the vague instruction manual, to the build quality. I expected a lot more from a brand like Philips. There are lots of better options out there for less money. This would be a viable option if you just want a stripped down, bare bones soundbar for a bedroom TV. I wouldn't recommend it for the living room. Giving it a mediocre 3 stars. ... show more
