    • This rod snapped on the first catch.
I bought this combo for spin fishing for trout. Out of the box I was impressed by the rod itself, I really liked the palm swell in the cork handle and the secure reel seat. I spooled up the reel with 4lb and set off for the trout stream. I was excited to try this rod, the light weight and maneuverability appealed to me. Casting a 1/16oz spinner into a known hole hooked me up with a feisty brown trout, which promptly snapped the rod in half, a few inches above the ferrule. I pulled the fish in by hand and it turned out to be 10", which should not have been enough to cause enough stress on this rod to break it. I believe that there is a flaw in the blanks that were used to construct these rods. I know my way around and ultralight set up very well, and I have never experienced this kind of catastrophic failure in construction. The reel is ok, it's not great, but it's okay, it 's kind of a workhorse and it will get the job done, I swapped it onto a well known ultralight rod, and it is going strong, however, I wish I didn't have to do that. This rod was just the length that I wanted and I really liked the weight and balance, but the fact that it couldn't handle even one wild fish, leads me to say that I would not recommend this combo to others who are looking for an ultralight set up. ... show more

Got the lightweight. Casts very smoothly ! Haven’t yet tried it out against a catch but so far has held up extremely well. Good for the price and is a beauty! Package was not taped well and was nearly open upon arrival. Besides that the rod and reel are incredible.

    • Rod broke after light use like many other reports on this site - seems hit or miss on this rod
Pflueger make great reels for the money and historically I have had a great experience with their President rod/reel combos. Until I bought the 4.8' ultralight combo in June. This rod snapped 6 inches from the end (at the last eye before the rod tip) on its fourth use with no weight or restriction on the line... I was just reeling in. My 15 year old son owns the same rod (and is a lot tougher on equipment than me) and has had zero issues over the past 4 months of heavy usage fishing for trout. I bought the same rod based on his experience, and assume I got a bad batch. Trouble is my 30 day return window has closed with Amazon and so now I am trying to get a replacement from Pflueger. I did read the one star ratings before I bought, but hoped I would get a "good" one. Seems it truly is a gamble whether you get a rod that lasts or one that breaks after light usage... be warned! ... show more

I have enjoyed fishing my entire live usually used something cheep but got this as a gift and it is the most sensitive tip with a nice back in for a strong hook set. Already cought a nice 25"walleye, lots of small mouth,gills, brook trout and several 12 + lb cat fish cast great with 8 lb mono as well my boyfriend has the same rode as a finwick and likes this one better just fyi ... show more
