Reel is smooth, light and seems well made. Has held up to occasional saltwater splashes. Unfortunately rod snapped...10 days past Amazon's return window. I would recommend the reel...but unless the combo is on extraordinary sale, recommend skipping the rod. Update: Changed from 1 star to 5 stars. I emailed Pflueger with pictures and my Amazon receipt. Pflueger warrantied the rod and is sending me a replacement. I only had to pay for the shipping. Lisa at the Pflueger warranty department was extremely efficient and the claim process was extremely low hassle.     • This rod snapped on the first catch.
I bought this combo for spin fishing for trout. Out of the box I was impressed by the rod itself, I really liked the palm swell in the cork handle and the secure reel seat. I spooled up the reel with 4lb and set off for the trout stream. I was excited to try this rod, the light weight and maneuverability appealed to me. Casting a 1/16oz spinner into a known hole hooked me up with a feisty brown trout, which promptly snapped the rod in half, a few inches above the ferrule. I pulled the fish in by hand and it turned out to be 10", which should not have been enough to cause enough stress on this rod to break it. I believe that there is a flaw in the blanks that were used to construct these rods. I know my way around and ultralight set up very well, and I have never experienced this kind of catastrophic failure in construction. The reel is ok, it's not great, but it's okay, it 's kind of a workhorse and it will get the job done, I swapped it onto a well known ultralight rod, and it is going strong, however, I wish I didn't have to do that. This rod was just the length that I wanted and I really liked the weight and balance, but the fact that it couldn't handle even one wild fish, leads me to say that I would not recommend this combo to others who are looking for an ultralight set up. ... show more

I recently purchased the Pflueger President Spinning Rod for bass and walleye fishing, and I’m thoroughly impressed! This rod is lightweight, sensitive, and casts like a dream. The cork handle feels great in hand, even after hours on the water, and the Fuji guides make line movement super smooth. I love this rod and real combo. I bought the ultra light set up to fish for trout and panfish. The first day I used it was opening day of trout. With in five minutes of getting to the stocked lake my bobber disappeared. I gave the line a firm tug and thought that some how I managed to get stuck on a tree branch or rock. Nope it was a gigantic fish to my surprise. I fought the fish for about ten minutes trying to wear it out. The rod was bent to the point I was extremely worried about it snapping in two but it did not. The reel and drag system got a work out to say the least. I was amazed how well it performed. When I finally landed the fish it was a 31” carp. Not sure how much it weighed but it far exceeded the rod and reels normal duty. That rod and reel have now become my go to primary set up. I fish for everything with it. Love the Pflueger present reel. I bought a second on two sizes up for lake fishing in NY. Great value and great price. I received the first one with a broken tip. I received the second broken on the handle end. Neither one of the boxes were damaged. Don’t have pictures from the first one but the tip was gone.
