Purchased two Presidential Series reels, a model 30 and model 40. Both reels are very smooth casting. Loaded them with 12 lb mono line and they are fine. Caught a large blue catfish in Santee Cooper last weekend on the model 30 and it handled it fine. Very happy with both models.

    • Bail Arm Guide Is Plastic, this is what keeps you from losing a fish!

I have replaced the bail arm guide on 2 of the three reels I bought. It starts out as the bail feeling funky, this is when it's broken but still in a position to where it will work correctly, then the bail either completely lets go as it did on one reel so it will no longer retain line on the reel, which was a huge problem as I was trolling and just letting line go out uncontrolled. OR The bail gets stuck permanently closed, it all depends on how the little plastic parts inside the bail arm breaks and jams itself. I have a few shimano reels where the same part is metal, and the larger pfleugers have metal bail arm guides. But the presidents have a cheap tiny hollow plastic piece that holds the bail shut. You can get replacements, and they are cheap, but there's a chance you'll lose expensive gear and/or fish with these reels, which are otherwise very good quality. I can almost guarentee these are the issues other people are seeing when they have reels that won't reel forward correctly anymore, I am going to bet this structural piece of plastic is breaking up and getting jammed in the bail actuator assembly and causing all kinds of issues. ... show more
