  • Requires custom installation, but worth the effort
Style: 81" Sliding Door Size: Large - Tall Color: White
I recently (3/2014) purchased this product after wanting one for several years for my dogs, and just got the installation finished. The product arrived as described, and was packed well. Fair warning - this product requires a custom installation on each home, and will require adjustment to eliminate gaps between the existing sliding door and the pet door. I'd call it a moderately difficult installation for a "weekend warrior" home DIY person (I do most of my own repairs around the house, i.e. install a new dishwasher, fix all the plumbing, etc, but don't put in new floors/tile, work on AC/heating, do drywall work). I found Charlie the Pug (5/2/12) and Dave's (6/18/2010) reviews useful for assistance with installation. Some changes to what they did in order to eliminate the gap between my sliding glass door and the pet door. I used Frost King White Rubber Foam Weather seal ¾" wide 7/16" thick 10 foot long roll for both sides of the pet door. I put it between the pet door and the sliding door frame (the part that you will never see), and between the sliding door and the pet door. I tried the EPDM Rubber weather seal that Charlie the Pug mentions, and found the Foam to work better. I suggest picking up both and using your intuition when installing. I also put three screws at the top and bottom of the pet door from the sliding door frame into the pet door instead of the 1 that the installation instructions mentioned. This made the door much more solidly fixed to the frame. I then put two screws on the frame side as the instructions mentioned (one 12" below the height adjuster and the other 1" above the pet door). One major change that I made from the installation instructions was not putting the dog door bottom around the sliding door track. The bottom of the dog door has a semi-circular cut out to fit over the track that your sliding door runs on. I put the dog door between the front lip of the frame and this track so that the pet door sits as close inside of the track as possible. I found that this made the inside edge of the dog door flush with inside edge of my sliding door, and also made it much more stable since it was tightly fit between the frame and the track. Other style sliding doors may not accommodate the pet door like this, but I found it helped me out. In order to eliminate the gap, I needed compression between the pet door and the sliding door. In order to achieve this, I went with a cam action sash lock that can be bought from my home improvement stores. The one I bought was from Home Depot (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Prime-Line-Cam-Action-Window-Sash-Lock-U-9925/100166499?N=c3hcZ5yc1v). After the sash lock engages, the handle turns another 90 degrees, which provides compression between the two pieces. Brilliant! It took me 2.5 hours working solidly to eliminate the gap before I found this gem, and then my gap was gone! It also is an effective lock, as the sash lock they provide with the dog door is kind of wimpy. Because I am security minded, I also bought a security bar designed for small sliding door gaps ([...]). I have not tried this yet, but think it will be a nice addition to the sash lock for compression (eliminate gap) and security. Please note: the sash lock only eliminates the gap when it is engaged, so if I have the door unlocked, there is still a small gap between the dog door and the sliding door. I can live with this small gap, and do not really keep my sliding door unlocked unless I am going in/out of it. The dog door includes a plastic panel to put in as a security measure, and it seems solidly built. There are tracks on both sides of the flap to put the security panel. I think I may pick up a second to put on the outside for use in the winter to add an extra layer of insulation between my house and the cold midwest winters. Some other suggestions: the screws they provide are pretty weak. I broke several while installing. Got fed up and went to Home Depot and bought better screws that wouldn't break. Follow Dave's suggestion about the sweep between the sliding glass door and the stationary glass door, it helps to have some overlap. Be persistent in installing this door, as it is very useful and a good price. My dogs now love it, and I feel like I conquered Mt. Everest by eliminating that small little gap between the sliding door and the dog door. For sizing: I bought the Large/Tall. One dog is 67 pounds, lab/pit bull mix, who has 10.5" between the floor and his chest/belly (rise). His withers are like 21". The other dog is 58 pound lab/boxer mix, who has 10" between the floor and her chest/belly, and has 20" withers. Both dogs go through the door with ease, and the extra height of the tall riser (8.5" on the large/tall door versus 4.5" with just the Large door) looks like it would make a huge difference for them using it. Hope you enjoy ... show more

  • Good sturdy door
Style: 81" Sliding Door Size: Large Color: Bronze
I finally got my patio panel installed. It definitely requires extra weather stripping as it seems most door frames aren't plumb. I appreciated the installation videos to better understand the directions. I ordered the wrong size door for my dog, but I was able to return it and get the correct size. My dog learned how to use the door easily enough and she fits perfectly through it. It's a good, sturdy door. ... show more

  • Convenient and stylish dog door
Style: 96" Sliding Door Size: Large - Tall Color: White
This is a great, sturdy, well-built door piece. It looks very nice and blends in well with the existing doors so that it doesn't look like a cheap add-on. I really like the look of it - with the glass on top and only a small portion as the dog door, and the fact that the flap has a magnet to help it snap shut. I also appreciate that they've made it height-adjustable so that you can try to make it fit your individual door better. It comes with everything you need for basic installation, including foam tape to help reduce/seal any gaps, but if you need the fitting for recessed doors, you will have to call customer service. We ordered this to reduce the amount of times we had to open and shut the sliding door to let the dog in and out, and we mostly accomplished that goal. This product is intended to go next to the sliding glass door, but because our door frame isn't perfectly squared it would've left a gap between the dog door piece and the slider that I wasn't comfortable with from a safety or long term temperature-efficiency standpoint. (That's the fancy way of saying there would've been a permanent gap someone could've pried the door open through and air would've blown through the gap during times when I wanted the door totally shut, and I'm not cool with that). We decided to try it next to the screen door instead, and it actually works out much better there. We have the tallest size door, so we had to measure and screw in the adjustable top piece to fit. I also ordered the version that has the dog flap raised off the ground so that the dog doesn't have to duck as much to walk in and out. Because we use it on the slider, we didn't need or install the locking mechanism it comes with because we still use the main lock on the glass door. The dog was sketchy about it the first day, and I was really worried I'd just blown a lot of money on something he'd be too scared to ever use. We kept going from one side of it to the other, calling him with treats, and cracking the flap open so he could see that he could get in/out that way. The first day we pretty much had to push him through a few times to make him see that he wouldn't die/melt/combust. The second day he'd walk though it, but only if we lifted it a little first. I only lifted it about an inch and made sure to let go as soon as he started putting his nose through so he'd get used to feeling the flap sliding on his head. After that it's been smooth sailing, thankfully. I'm at home a lot and we live in a mild-weather area, so I'm able to just slide the glass door open enough that the dog door is not blocked, and leave it that way unless we leave. That situation wouldn't be ideal for everyone since the main door has to be open, but it works for us. I haven't really needed to use the blocking piece much, but the few times I have it seems well built, light, easy to store, and easy to slide in and out. I really do like this product, and there are only a couple reasons I don't think it's 100% a 5-star. I feel like whether or not you can make it fit in your particular frame in your house is a YMMV situation. I definitely don't think it's overpriced for what you get, but it's not exactly cheap, and if it were not to fit, you have a really large item to pack up and deal with sending back. If you really wanted it in its intended location next to the glass door and your frame was uneven like ours, it might not work. Another thing is they do offer a free two-piece bracket for recessed frame installation, but it doesn't come the set. My husband read online that the company started including this piece in all sets now because so many people needed/requested it, but apparently not in the ones sold on Amazon? You have to call the number during business hours to request one, provide the model of your door, and wait 8-11 days for them to FedEx it to you. We ordered the bracket and installed it, it works great, but kind of a pain when you want to install it and you have to wait over a week for the securing pieces. Beside those two issues though, I love it, dog loves it, would recommend. ... show more

  • Great for animals who are indecisive
Style: 81" Sliding Door Size: Large Color: White
Having one of these is a must for those who don’t want to get up and let your pet in and out all the time. Our dog uses this all the time! And it’s so easy to install, it literally takes a matter of a few seconds. It fits well, and is durable. If I were to be critical, I’d say that the insulation part of it isn’t great. The weather stripping isn’t as good as the rest of it. And the security of the door is hard to be sure of. But for the average situation, this door is PERFECT! Also, our dog is pretty chunky, and she gets in and out just fine with our door. ... show more
