  • Perfect size for a tiny Chihuahua!
Style: Sustainable Packaging Size: Small
My Father in Law needed a doggie door for his Tea Cup-sized Chihuahua and this worked perfectly! After cutting a hole in the back door, putting this together and attaching it was fairly simple. His little pup was running out the back door in no time at all!

  • Best pet item ever purchased!
Style: Sustainable Packaging Size: Small
What an awesome product! My little shitzu likes being on the porch and now he's free to do so all day long. My nephew installed it and we wondered if he would know what to do. Well...he did and what a god-send it has been for both of us. He has his freedom to go in and out as he pleases and knows how to let me know when he needs to leave the porch to roam the yard. I would definitely buy again. ... show more

  • aluminum better than plastic?
Style: Sustainable Packaging Size: Small
So I previously had the plastic version of this PetSafe door. We used for several years and it served us well enough, although it probably ended up costing us hundreds in extra energy costs, but at least our cats could get to and from the screened in porch easily. We had a new door installed during a recent home renovation and had to decide whether to keep the old plastic PetSafe or upgrade to something better. I looked around quite a bit, online and at local home improvement stores. To my surprise, I really didn't see anything better. I decided to go ahead and order this Aluminum version, my logic being that an aluminum pet door was probably better than the plastic version I had. Right? So was it better? Well, the plastic door insert that comes with this aluminum door is better because it has a small metal locking mechanism, so it is slightly more secure than the plastic insert of our previous version. I liked the tinted door flap, which makes it more difficult for people outside the door to see light from inside the house. That also seems to offer slightly better security. The aluminum frame is not really that ornate, however, with screws and metal bolts clearly visible. It looks reasonable once installed however. The seal is about the same as the plastic version, but the magnet that keeps it in place is smaller. The stripping on the sides also pick up cat hair like crazy and really need to be cleaned daily. We didn't have this problem with the plastic version side stripping. Others have mentioned this, but let me put this issue to rest: the plastic screws that ship with this product are completely unacceptable! These "screws" are what hold this door in place, and they are made out of plastic, for Pete's sake. And, being plastic, they perform exactly how one might expect plastic screws to perform. Your drill or screwdriver will strip the heads simply by screwing them in, and most likely, they are going to snap and break off if you ever have to take the door off. I tried taking this cat door off to paint the door, and had one break off completely, and the others were a serious pain to remove. Why were these plastic screws shipped with this product? After a trip to the local hardware store, I found the correct metal screws and reinstalled the door without any trouble. With proper metal screws, the door can be installed much more securely with little worry about anything breaking or stripping if you need to remove it (or even installing it in the first place). Don't buy this product unless you don't mind going to the hardware store and buying the proper mounting hardware yourself. At least the plastic screws that ship with this door give you something to hand the hardware handyman. "Excuse me, do you have any of these screws in metal?" ... show more

  • Read before you install
Style: Sustainable Packaging Size: Small
Over various years, houses etc. we've had about 6 doors from Petsafe, and I did the install on them all. They are wonderful units, and they last really well. We use the small size, which is perfect for cats (ours run up to 16lbs). So this review only applies to the size small. Couple of call outs that you may find helpful: 1) This aluminum version is more rugged than the plastic version from the same manufacturer, and holds up better with time. It's worth paying the small premium for this one in my opinion (though the other is also great). Also the panel to close this if you want to keep the cats in is way better. With the other unit, the cats worked out how to pull off the cover. This has a metal channel for the closing panel, and a positive close bolt that snaps into place so it's a lot better. 2) The template that comes with the install instructions is sized EXACTLY to the size needed. If you cut a millimeter too small at any point along any of the lines, you'll have to re-cut. This is a miss because there is no harm in you cutting 1-2mm larger than the template and giving yourself a little wiggle room. So I am saying cut ever so slightly larger than the template. 3) The plastic bolts this comes with are crap. I have no idea why they use plastic and not metal bolts. I think the idea is to allow you to flex them during install. The heads simply break when you put any tightening force through them. What I always do is go to a hardware store and buy the same thread, and length bolts, but in stainless steel (or some other weatherproof metal. Recommend you do this BEFORE you attempt to install so that you don't have to go to the store halfway through. If you want to give your pets free access to the outdoors, these are great. ... show more

  • First timer; Easy as pie.
Style: Sustainable Packaging Size: Small
This thing is amazing!! I bought this because leaving our screened-in porch door open for our cat was allowing bugs, birds, and everything in between onto our porch. This pet door was worlds cheaper than a new door with a pet door installed; and it was easy to install. I did have to purchase a jig saw, but the instructions for the door were clear and easy to follow. I even installed it while my three younger children played outside at a safe distance (even amidst the distraction of their playing, I could follow and successfully install it). Our cat is a little over 8 pounds, and I used the x-small cut out. Works perfectly!! A few things of note--for a more narrow door, you have to bend off part of the inner metal of the pet door (will make sense if/when you order it). It's not hard, but I was fairly sure I was breaking the pet door as I was doing it. Obviously, I wasn't, but it was unnerving at first. Second, if you have a long-haired cat like we do, his/her hair will collect on door as he/she goes in/out. It's not a deal breaker at all! But it is something to be aware of--we pull it off every few days. Overall, couldn't be more happy and I'm considering purchasing one for our downstairs porch door. Very pleased!! ... show more
