  • Good product but motor needs replaced often
Style: Platinum
I bought this Petsafe drink fountain a little over a year ago. My cats love this fountain, and it is great to use when I am going a long trip. It was extremely easy to assemble and arrived in good condition. It included a few filters. Rinse those filters under the faucet for about a minute or two before using or black particles will run into the water bowl and discolor it. I gave it four stars because I just recently had to replace the motor for a second time, so I've gone through three motors. I don't know if this is normal; however, it seems they do not last as long as I thought they would. Be sure and rinse out the fountain and lightly clean once a week. You can do heavy cleaning once every couple of week with some wire brushes, baking soda and vinegar. I would recommend this fountain as long as you don't mind replacing the motor every four months. ... show more

I bought this to replace an identical fountain I bought seven years ago. Yes, seven. And when that fountain failed the motor was still going strong. I don’t know what was wrong with the old one. It kept upchucking half its water onto the floor. Previously this would happen if the prefilter was clogged. This time that was not the problem. I couldn’t solve it so decided to retire the old fountain after seven years of service. Certainly got my money’s worth Fountain comes assembled. I read lots of reviews of other styles (before I found this one still for sale). Many complaints of difficult assembly and poor instructions. This fountain us easy to assemble. Capacity. You’ll have to read description for this. I would say it is good for a cat but not a dog. There is a reservoir that doubles the capacity but I do not use it. I just pour water into the bowl when it gets low. If it gets too low the fountain starts to make some noise and reminds you. Ease of seeing water level. Could not be easier. Just look at bowl. I read reviews about this being difficult on other fountains even with special indicator lights. Not so here. Reservoir. Attaching the full reservoir to the fountain us a little bit like changing a Sparkletts bottle. There is going to be a little splashing but not anything a paper towel can’t handle. A small price to pay fir the simplicity. Filters. It comes with one filter and recommends replacement each month. I go two months’. Replacement filters from the company cost about $1 apiece. I use aquarium filters for about $7.50 a dozen. These are Tetra Bio Bag filter cartridges size medium available on Amazon. When I looked today to check the price I saw a number of knock offs which may be cheaper and are probably just as good. Instead of using a disposable pre filter this fountain uses a permanent plastic pre filter which basically just catches hair. It lifts right out to remove the hair. If you forget to clean the pre filter the fountain gets nosier and reminds you. If you really screw this up extra water collects in the bowl and eventually spills out on the floor making a big mess. I had this happen three or four times in seven years. Cleaning. There’s the rub. It requires a little extra effort to clean all the nooks and crannies . There are basically two parts. They can go in the top half of the dishwasher. I pop the bowl part right in. The part that the water percolates through has a lot of nooks and crannies that I like to pre wash. An ordinary dish brush fits in for the overall job. There is one pencil sized channel that I use a small brush to clean. I think a toothbrush also works but barely. The manufacturer sells a brush kit but you only need a single brush. I read a lot of reviews fir other fountains and do not think this is anymore difficult to clean. Motor. Tough motor. Keeps on ticking. The reviews I read for other fountains were rife with complaints of early motor failure. I think Drinkwell uses a very good quality motor. When you clean the fountain you should take the motor apart and clean it with a q-tip. There is a cover over the housing you pry off. Then pop out the rotor thingie and swab the hole. It is a good idea to lubricate the housing cover with a smidgeon of Vaseline to make it easier to pop off the next time. Don’t forget to put the little rotor back in. I have a couple of times and this requires taking everything apart again. Scale and mold. I don’t gave hard water so I don’t know what kind of build up there could be. After seven years mine had a ring in the bowl and some deposits on the control that adjusts flow. Cat doesn’t care. Have bever had mold or algae like some reviewers of other fountains complained about. Besides I don’t think these problems are the fountains’ fault Noise. Virtually noiseless. There is a ramp in the bowl that the flowing water hits before sliding into the water in the bowl so there is really no trickle. Motor is quiet. Motor makes some noise when fountain is under-filled or when pre-filter is clogged. The noise is a good reminder to take action Value. This fountain costs twice what many others cost but the reviews I read show this one to be worth the extra price. You save a little on pre filters because unlike others it doesn’t use disposables. The regular filters are probably as cheap as they get particularly if you use aquarium filters as here described. I was so discouraged reading the descriptions and reviews of the cheaper fountains. So happy to see this one being sold. It us exactly the same as the one I bought seven years ago because it us a great design. It may not be perfect but I don’t believe I would be happy with one if the cheap ones. Cat likes it. I have two cats. One is strictly a fountain drinker. I was worried she would be put off by a different fountain but fortunately I didn’t have to find out. Second cat drinks out of a bowl but mostly likes vertical water out of the faucet. ... show more

  • Let Drinkwell Spoil Your Pet With Laps of Luxury
Style: Platinum
If you have a cat or dog, you have probably discovered just how much they love a fresh drink of water, from a faucet or even the household commode. Although loving owners keep dishes of water handy for their pets, our furry little friends seem to prefer the cool, fresh H20 offered by the bathroom or kitchen sink, and even from the bowl of a recently flushed toiled. Any veterinarian will inform you of how important it is for your pet to remain properly hydrated. Cats are especially susceptible to serious urinary tract and kidney problems if they lack enough water intake, and can contract the well known and potentially fatal Feline Urinary Syndrome. If only there were a practical, more sanitary way to treat our pets to a refreshing drink of fresh water whenever their precious little hearts desired. Enter the Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain, made by Veterinary Ventures Inc. This fabulous invention offers a free-falling stream of water, which entices pets to drink more, keeping them happy, healthy and hydrated. The fountain utilizes a submersible pump for nearly silent operation. A handy pre-filter catches large particles before they reach the motor, and a replaceable charcoal filter also removes bad tastes and odors. By using a 5-inch falling stream of water, the Pet Fountain continually aerates your pet's water with healthful oxygen. The total water capacity of this unit is 168 oz. This provides more than enough thirst quenching water for multiple cats or even a fairly large dog. With a footprint of 16 x 11 x 10.5 inches, this device requires quite a bit more space than the typical water bowl. The Pet Fountain requires a nearby A/C power outlet, utilizing a low voltage, 12V DC transformer, with a handy inline barrel-type disconnect, for easy plug removal. Any excess cord wraps and stores neatly beneath the base of the fountain. There is a flow control lever inside the basin/bowl area of the fountain, just outside the pre-filter. This lever is a bit long and I find that my cats sometimes bump it, causing the water flow to change. This is not a big problem, but when the flow is reduced it tends to cause the stream of water to fall on the receiving ramp in a way that causing more noise (makes a light splashing sound). There is a large, clear water reservoir that snaps onto the back of the fountain base. It is easy to remove and fill the reservoir with water, but the required inversion of the reservoir can cause some water to drip out onto the floor while lowering it into the back of the fountain. The entire unit (minus the electric motor) is dishwasher safe, so the unit is very easy to clean. The plastic parts of this device are very solid and fit together firmly, giving a high quality feel and finish. My wife and I were very excited when our new Drinkwell Pet Fountain arrived. The box contained the miscellaneous parts of the Pet Fountain, the DC power transformer, a charcoal filter, a plastic accessory holder clip (for the Drinkwell Aqua Garden - sold separately), product registration card, and the assembly/operation manual. Our fountain even included a special floor mat, for placing under the fountain to protect the floor beneath, which commemorates the 10 year anniversary of the company. I can't say that all future Pet Fountains sold by Veterinary Ventures Inc. will include this mat, but I highly recommend that you use some sort of mat beneath the unit, as you will likely end up with some water dripped or splashed from the unit. The Pet Fountain was extremely easy to assemble and we had it up and running in just a few minutes. Filling the unit for the first time was a little messy, as the reservoir dripped quite a bit of water while lowering it into the base. The reservoir emptied completely, as the water flowed out and filled the open drinking basin. You then refill the reservoir and reattach to the back of the unit. Within seconds of powering on the unit, there was a nice, steady stream of water cascading out from the spout. Although the manufacturer claims that the Pet Fountain is "nearly silent" in operation, our unit has a fairly pronounced humming sound, made by the motor and impellor system, and there is definitely an audible (although quite soft) sound produced by the cascading water. Our cats were immediately intrigued by the new fountain, and they were both drinking from it within minutes of turning it on. They have been eagerly lapping up water from the fountain ever since. Most of the time they enjoy drinking directly from the stream of water, coming from the spout. Other times they simply drink from the basin. Our cats are definitely drinking much more water than they did before we installed the Pet Fountain, and although they still like to drink from the bathroom sink faucet, from time to time, they don't pester us to turn on the faucet nearly as often. This Pet Fountain is easy to fill, easy to clean, and our cats simply love it. Although the fountain is fairly quiet, it is certainly not silent, so I don't think I would want it installed in an environment that anyone would be sleeping in. The cost of this fountain is a bit excessive but we feel the product is definitely worth the money. There are cheaper fountains on the market (we have tried a couple of different makes and models), but we have found the Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain to be a far superior product. We highly recommend this watering system to anyone that has one or more pets, for which they care about their health and happiness. They give you so much unconditional love and affection, so go ahead and spoil them with the Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain. =o) ... show more
