Description

The Petmate Compass Kennel strives for a comfortable and safe experience for pets and peace of mind for pet parents. With the expandable entrance, pet parents can easily assist their pets entering and exiting the plastic kennel. The double-hinged door's turn-dial latches allow easy access for opening on either side, or for complete door removal. The top's slide-on design allows for easy assembly, snapping together in three simple steps, no tools required. Optional hardware is included for additional security. Ventilation openings allow for better visibility and fresh air on all sides, keeping pets comfortable during travel. The Petmate Kennel meets most airline cargo specifications, but pet parents should always check with their airline's specific requirements. This is a really nice kennel that we got for when need to take our dogs to the vet. It is the 36” size. We have 2 kennels in the larger 40” size in a different model by Petmate, which has been great for crate training the puppies who are now 10 months old and over 50-60 lbs. but that size didn’t fit in our Subaru Outback hatch opening. I would give it 5 stars but like many people the assembly was initially difficult. The top and bottom sides didn’t line up even with two of us pressing them together, however it went well by turning the kennel upside down so we could see what was going on in the grooved latches. The latches slid together and screw holes all lined up! Teamwork was also a help. I didn’t have to return the kennel after all! Our car is too small for two kennels and we have to take the puppies one at a time for well care and spaying (weren’t thinking of that when we got 2 cute little puppy siblings) but that is our fault for getting such a big breed. We are happy with this kennel and relieved we can get it in our car. It also has tie down holes on the corners if that is needed. ... show more

This is my second purchase of this model so that my dog could have one at my parents house (we visit there often). He simply loves this crate. I had a small PetMate Sky Dog Kennel from another dog but he didn’t want to use that one. I think he likes the extra room this one provides so he can be extra cozy and feel very safe and secure. I like the slide to lock feature; between that and the screws, I think the crate is held together well. One assembly tip, make sure you line the top up with the point indicated in the base (about 3/4 of the way to the front). When you do this it slides on easily. Unfortunately, I forgot about this at first initially unsuccessfully tried to slide it from the back. It will not slide all the way forward from that position. I think this may be why some people are reporting difficultly with sliding on the top over the base. One other assembly issue I had was that the front holes did not line up well. It took some effort to get those screws through. Another set of the holes were not entirely drilled through. My dad had to use his drill to fix that. I didn’t have this issue with the first crate so maybe I was just unlucky or maybe the quality is declining. ... show more

This is a okay crate, reasonably solid but not heavy duty enough to use on an airplane. Also the measurements are off. Again. Petmate seems to make a habit of giving a measurement based on the most outside generous number they can come up with that's not an out and out lie. but where they're measuring from counts and it's not where the dog actually places it's body. Although the sticker says this meets "most" airline travel requirements, I wouldn't dream of putting an animal in it for that purpose. It's not thick or solid enough. I don't think it would handle much in the way of banging or dropping so be careful because the plastic is not thick..only an 1/8" - not much when you consider handling and a dog inside - and there's an element of bendability in the plastic that does not seem to be something you'd want for transporting a animal in an airplane hold. what I like: how it comes together - slides then snaps closed, then you secure it with screws or tie wraps. husband had to put the door on...I couldn't figure that. I like that you can open the door on either side. excellent idea. what I don't like: The measurements stink. Yes, it IS 28" at the very middle where the crate swells but overall it's closer to 24 when you measure front to back where the dog actually lays on the bottom. I suppose this is the way it is, you buy based on that middle swell and door frames and other areas where the dog is not going to be - like that middle swell. My dog lays on the floor of the crate and has not yet mastered levitation to get at that wide middle area. So if you're consider this crate, 28" front to back I'd advise you knock off a good 4 to 6 inches from front to back and a few side to side because that's what you're going to get - quite a bit less space than you might think as per description. Frankly, I don't see why it's so difficult to get an accurate measure from these mfgs. I'm sure the mfg knows what the measurements are. Also why is there more information on the label than in the amazon ad? The label suggests what breed dogs will fit in it and there's even a picture of a french bulldog standing half in it, so you get a better idea of overall size. But it says 20-30 lb range but I don't see a 25 - 30 lb dog comfortably fitting in this crate, not by a long shot unless it's built like a football with short legs. My dog is not even 18 lbs and she's cramped in it, has to curl around the bottom because she can't lay straight (there's where those 4+" missing inches would come in handy). I'm unhappy with this crate - the quality is about what I expected - maybe a tiny bit less but I didn't buy it for airline use - only for short trips/car crating so I think it's acceptable. I'm unhappy because it's simple enough to provide a diagram that honestly shows exact measurements. If they did that, it would avoide these returns I'm having to make. I just don't get this essential avoidance of giving accurate measurements - does the mfg think I'm going to cram my dog into their crate because it's here and I'm too lazy to return it? No. I guess most of you understand how crates measure but I'd like to point out that I have a petmate varicrate, same mfg, and it's not so much wide in that center area as this one - it's taller. Each crate has it's own dynamic design, some like this are short and squat and wide in the very center. And some are long from front to back and more boxlike (like the varicrate). Some mfgs count that small lip that holds the door as a measuremnt (this mfg does) and some don't. Some give accurate measurements and some fudge. This mfg fudged. These items are not inexpensive. It would be very helpful to provide complete and accurate measurements, maybe a basic schematic because this is not the first crate I've had to return. I suppose if I had a petstore nearby I could look around, find my crate and then buy it here because amazon does have excellent prices. But I don't have one close by so I'll have to drive a long way to do that. I'm thinking I should avoid PETMATE because both crates were PETMATE and both descriptions gave me deceptive measurements unless I'm willing to count the center swell and the door frame and perhas put a bed in it that raises her up to the middle to take advantage of unused spacial real estate. It's a shame because the price is fair, the thinking that went into the assembly and door is terrific but the measurements stink and in our case, I'm afraid that counts for a lot. ... show more

It’s a good cat carrier but I had the exact same cat carrier that I got a while back (I got another because I need two now) and although I spent more on this new one, it was more cheaply made than the original petmate one I had. I expected the same great quality which is why I paid the higher price and bought the exact same model that I already have and they’re definitely manufactured cheaper than they use to. It’s disappointing but it’s still a good carrier and does the job. The plastic also had some little scratches but I guess nothing can be perfect. Assembly was rather difficult and time consuming. The screws were hard on my fingers since you have to manually twist them. Also I did not know to slide it on and line up all the notches before I started screwing and I had to reverse and take the screws out to fix. ... show more
