Clean the surface, peel off the backing paper off the Guard and then apply the Guard. PereGuard works on thermoformed boats, fiberglass, rotomold plastic, aluminum, and many other materials.

Description

Just purchased a brand new kayak or catamaran? Protect it with PereGuard. PereGuard is a easy to use protective guard that can be applied to your kayak in any location that will receive extra wear and tear. This strip is designed for outdoor use and will stand up to the most rigorous of abuse. The strip is easy to apply, and with a little heat can wrap around corners and edges. With heat the strip is also easy to remove. Sticks to fiberglass, thermoformed, ABS, and polyethylene (roto) kayaks. Note that this PereGuard is 2" wide. This product protects against accidental contact with rough surfaces. It will not allow you to drag it along the cement (we have had customers try that). Installation Instructions for this product are as follows - Clean the area thoroughly with a mild soap and water to ensure a clean surface, once the surface is dry remove the tan backing on the keel guard to expose the adhesive layer and apply the tape to the desired location - Enjoy!

This is an excellent product. After reading the instructions and taking the recommended actions, it was very easy to install, and after a season on the ocean, it is holding up wonderfully. I do recommend using the heat gun/hairdryer approach to really seal the adhesive down good. It will also allow you to better form the thick vinyl to match the contours of your boat. My only regret, is I wish I had ordered the larger, four inch version. The two-inch is very good, but four inches would have been double the coverage. My keel does have a pretty good curve to it, so it might have been harder to form it to the curve in that circumstance, but I can't help but feel like I could have worked around that. Regardless, that's my mistake, not the product's, so I certainly don't fault it for that. It is a bit pricey, admittedly. But if you paid a high price for your kayak, then you want to protect it and make it last a long time. My buddy bragged how be protected his boat just as well with simple Gorilla Tape. And while I suppose that will work to some degree, it also looked awful (the edges were always peeling back, and the black tape started to flake off into white in patches) and he had to re-apply it several times throughout the season. Plus, even if you added enough tape to be twice the thickness as this product, it still wouldn't protect as well as this. This is a high density rubberized plastic. It does a great job of absorbing energy and dissipating it throughout. The tape isn't going to be as effective at this. Plus, I can beach my kayak, grinding the keel into the sand, knowing it's protected by this, while he has to worry about peeling his tape back each time he does that. I will say, considering the price, I made sure to use as much of this product as I could. So it runs from the very prow of my kayak, curving down the front of the keel, to about the mid-point of my boat (which is overkill), where there is a break in my keel to deploy a foot-powered propeller. So it runs half the length of my kayak. There was no point in running it any further, as my boat becomes flat-bottomed at the halfway point. After a season on the salt water (including a month-long kayaking/camping trip up the Pacific Coast), I have no complaints about this product (aside from saying it could be a little lower in price), and would purchase it again without a second thought. (Although, I would buy the larger size next time.) ... show more

    • Has issues conforming to a longitudinal curved surface.

It helps to have an extra pair of hands but it can be done by yourself. I applied it as directed using a heat gun. The heat gun helps as you apply on the curved bow or stern of a canoe. The problem I experienced showed up a couple of hours later. The material at the curve wanted to pull away in places at the edges. I ended up trimming some material at these spots which helped. Hopefully this works much better than tape I won’t know till late spring when the temperatures hit 70 degrees which is the recommended application temperature for this product
