  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Everything I wanted out of a kayak!
Style: 2020 - Framed Seat Back Pattern Name: Kayak Color: FUNKADELIC
*This will be a long, thorough review. Strap in, maybe grab a snack.* First off, it’s a beauty. Exactly as pictured. You’d be hard pressed to find a more gorgeous boat. Ordered it Aug 25th, received it on Sept. 2nd. Not an insane shipping time for such a massive item. (I live in the southwest U.S.) Now, I received it just a few minutes prior to 6:30 A.M., and I don’t know about you all, but I wouldn’t get up before 7:30 A.M. on purpose for even the sake of Christ himself, so be more on top of it than I was and pay attention to the app so you can choose your delivery window. I’ll start off with what I like about it. The side handles and the bow/stern holds are solid. Not all kayaks have carrying features that convenient, so I really appreciate those features. The chair is adjustable and more solid than 90% of kayaks I’ve seen and used. I saw some reviews about the straps getting in the way, I didn’t have anything even resembling that issue, I think the design of the seat is damn near flawless. Cargo hold areas have really solid elastic cord, so even if the boat tips a little (and all sit on tops do) what you have under the cord is staying put. What really sold me on this kayak in particular over other options was the high weight rating. 300 lbs gives you A LOT of ability to carry cargo, and if you plan on doing a day trip or lake shore camping, every pound counts. Most all other kayaks that are capable of carrying that kind of cargo aren’t under 10 ft. long like this one is, that’s for sure. Personally, I like as little bow and stern hanging off my car roof as possible. However, that high weight rating also means this kayak is heavy, which leads me into what I don’t like as much about it. When I say it’s heavy, I mean it. I’m a petite woman but I weight train and am significantly stronger than an average female. Still, I don’t stand a snowball’s chance of moving this by myself. Because I’ve got a partner who can help me move it, that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning on going it solo, this is NOT the kayak for you. Likely even if you’re a stronger man. You need two people to really do it right, period. It’s too unwieldy for a single person to handle in my opinion. The center of gravity on this kayak is higher than most sit on tops. Now, you get the comfort of that awesome adjustable seat back, but that does make it less stable than an average kayak. Something to consider if you’re less experienced and afraid to tip your boat. It’s a trade off, but for what I wanted this for, longer trips in the boat, I was okay to sacrifice a little stability. This isn’t the fastest kayak in the world. My partner in his sit in was doing laps around me. That’s okay, I wasn’t after speed. I wanted comfort and weight capacity. If you do want speed and you don’t want to get wet, this also might not be the boat for you. Obviously the self bailing feature is awesome, and it’s why I prefer sit on top kayaks to sit ins. In my opinion, if you’re afraid to get wet, kayaking is the wrong hobby for you. And if you tip your boat, it’s a lot more difficult to get out from underneath if you panic with a sit in. (as an aside, PLEASE invest in a good life jacket specifically designed for paddling, your safety is priceless) However, some of the scupper holes aren’t in totally obvious places, like under the seat, so if you’re planning to put scupper plugs in to stay dry-er, be mindful of that. Basically the only major flaw I wasn’t anticipating of this boat in how pathetic their ‘dry bag storage area’ is. I wouldn’t trust that to not take on water. It’s also tiny. If you plan on taking anything on with you, I highly recommend getting your own dry bags, preferably ones that come with straps that can get clipped to the cargo hold area. Also, a *floating* dry phone case. My phone is one thing I don’t want to take chances with. The only other thing I would change about this in an ideal world is price, but especially with kayaks, you get what you pay for. And in terms of quality and aesthetics, this baby delivers, big time. Overall, totally happy with my purchase. This boat has everything I really wanted out of a watercraft. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Love my kayak
I'll start with the only con to mention. I ordered this kayak two weeks ago and it arrived this past Friday. It was storming so I had the delivery guys put it directly into my storage unit. It was wrapped in tattered plastic with some cardboard underneath and folded over the two ends of the kayak. Yesterday I took it out and ripped off the plastic to find that the kayak has two large gashes on one side, probably from something large and heavy being crammed up next to it during shipping or perhaps from a razor opening a box that perhaps it was shipped it. The kayak came from Utah apparently, and I'm in Florida, so I do not plan to return it because this would be a major hassle and it's not worth it because the cuts are not deep enough to cause any problems on the water. It's just extremely disheartening to receive an already damaged item when you've spend over $500 on it. :( On to the pros. I'm very pleased with the kayak overall. First, it's just beautiful. I bought the 2019 Tribe in sea spray and the colors are great. This kayak is slightly more compact at 9.5' and I was able to maneuver it out of and back into the storage unit on my own, although carrying it long distances will not be possible for me personally because 45 lbs is a lot heavier than I thought it would be! I needed assistance to carry it all the way down to the water, and I will need to purchase a cart now that I realize I won't be able to manage that on my own. I took it out for an hour and half yesterday. On the water, it handled beautifully considering it its shorter than most. I felt quite stable. I was on flat channel water for a bit and then moved out to the deeper and choppier bay water. The scupper holes obviously allow water into the bottom of the boat, so expect your feet and things you store in the back well to get wet. Other than that, I really only got wet from the water dripping off of the paddles. The storage hole in the hull is somewhat small, but large enough for a cell phone, keys, a wallet. I was surprised that the cover to the hole was just a rubber lid, but it seemed to fit snugly over the hole and I believe your items will stay dry as long as the kayak doesn't roll. I'm not sure if the lid would stay on in that case. The hull of this boat is pretty wide so I found I needed to order a longer paddle for my height. I purchased a Carlisle magic plus paddle, which I'm also pleased with, but be sure to look carefully at the length you need because I went 230cm and I'm not sure it's long enough. Overall, I think this is a great kayak. I personally couldn't manage one that was any bigger and I definitely didn't want to go any smaller, so I appreciate the size. The colors are vibrate and probably more beautiful than portrayed in the picture. My only hesitation in buying one online like this in the future would be that if it's damaged upon arrival, there is really no simple recourse. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic kayak!
Style: 2020 - Framed Seat Back Pattern Name: Kayak Color: Déjà vu
I really love this kayak and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others. It tracked perfectly and I've taken her out into a really choppy swell, which she handled perfectly. Sure, I got splashed and sprayed but if you complain about that, then kayaking isn't for you. :) It's relatively light and easy enough for me to pick up and load on the car by myself. Did I say I love this kayak? Well, I do :) ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Better After Modifications
Style: 2020 - Framed Seat Back Pattern Name: Kayak Color: FUNKADELIC
I was looking for a new kayak that was comfortable and fast. The Tribe 9.5 was highly rated in both areas, but I'm disappointed on both counts. As for comfort, the straps were constantly in the way and rubbing against the back of my arms. I wrapped the straps around the lower seat back rail to correct that problem. The seat bottom doesn't provide much cushion for long trips. The seat gets rave reviews for comfort, but I'm not a fan. As for fast, it isn't. It has a pretty high profile and catches a lot of wind, so I tend to waste a lot of energy fighting the wind. I'm a medium sized female. This kayak may work better for a larger, heavier person. Lastly, shipping. The kayak arrived in a clear plastic bag and was missing the seat back. The delivery guys said that they had to put it back in the plastic bag when they loaded it on their truck, so no telling what happened to the seat back. I contacted Perception customer service directly, and they shipped a replacement quickly. ... show more
