Looking to get back into art and trying to find a medium that inspires me to do things again, I've been attempting a number of different things. I haven't used oil pastels since the early 2000s and decided to try them out again - I had fun! I don't have a lot of experience with different brands but if you are familiar with the Royal & Langnickel brand, Pentel is much better. The ease of blending is there, where as it's non-existent with the R&L brand. The only down side would be the smell. It is a very strong smell and I would recommend letting it air out for a few hours before using them properly. If you are a beginner or trying to get back into using oil pastels without dropping a ton of money on a new art supply you are afraid won’t keep your attention - look no further. I haven’t regularly used oil pastels in a good 10+ years and just wanted a cheap set to dip my toes in with and these exceeded my expectations. There is a strong smell when you first open them but I think that’s normal since they’re oil based and were wrapped and not exposed to air. These can blend pretty easily or you can utilize the rough unblended look. If you want to “paint” with them you can cut a piece off and blend it with oil (I use baby oil) and it will glide on the paper in a more painterly way, I do this with a paint brush to add in detail. They are pretty soft so be aware of the amount of pressure you are using, they break easily. ... show more
