  • A Worthwhile Upgrade
Style: 0.5mm Pattern: Pencil Color: 1 Pack
For years I had one of those simple plastic mechanical pencils you could find at Walmart, and it fulfilled its role admirably for many years, so much so I completely forgot where or how I came to be in possession of it. That said, over the years, the rubber portion where you hold the pencil was worn out, torn, and slipping off the ridge used to keep it in place, and the eraser had long since been replaced with a separate dedicated mechanical eraser, but I never threw it away because I used it so much. Writing, drawing, sketching, making a note, planning a design, so on and so forth, as the need to scribble away the hours came about, so too did the demand of that pencil of mine beckon it to fulfill its duty, and ever so honor-bound it was to happily oblige my latest expressive endeavor. And then, as if evil itself reared its ugly head in my mind's eye, the thought came one day, "I should get a better pencil." and like the callous creature I am, I went online, found this pencil, bought it, got it two days later, and emptied my previous companion of his ammunition, of his purpose, of his very being, and placed it into the newest model to replace him. I looked at him, my dear friend, in my hand, reflecting on all he had done for me for so long, for so little, with no thought to his own desires, and I said, "Thank you." then dropped him into the trash can, his loyalty meaning almost nothing to me. I got a new pencil. I got what I paid for. And you know what? I'm very happy with my purchase! :) ... show more

  • By far my favorite mechanical pencil
Style: 0.5mm Pattern: Pencil Color: 1 Pack
I like this pencil so much, I purchased all 5 sizes this time: 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9. My favorite lead is 2B. It's softer and much darker than the standard HB. H=Hard. The lead range is 4H, 3H...to HB, B...3B, 4B. When I'm checking construction sites, I use 0.9 to write erasable info on wood, walls, and other materials, wet or dry, regardless of temperatures. Not so with Sharpies and wax pencils. In the office, I use 0.5 and 0.7 for paperwork, blueprints, etc. The British all-time favorite is 0.4. I use the 0.3 for adding tiny details to building drawings and it matches my love for 0.38 gel-ink (ultra-fine) pens. GraphGear 1000s are great mechanical pencils. The only ones with fully retractable pencil points. I use Pentel Clicking erasers instead of the endcaps. It seems like too much work to stop writing, pull-off the endcap, erase, then put it back on. In half that time, I've grabbed an eraser and done. I had the same problem with the 0.7 pencil breaking like a couple of other Amazon reviewers. That blue ring in the middle of the pencil is plastic, which I didn't know until I found my pencil broken. Easy fix though. I put the two pieces back together and taped it super tight with black electrical tape - the good stuff (3M Temflex). Temflex is very durable, stretches a little, resistant to both water and extreme temperatures. 4 weeks later, my pencil still works like new and looks good. I kind of like the black tape. It's one more way of knowing which pencils are mine. Electrical tape comes in many colors. I plan to tape my other pencils too. So far, my new replacement 0.7 is not needed. NOTE: The price of lead refills varies a lot across Amazon. Also, Pentel has two sources. Ain Pentel is from Japan. I'm guessing the other is from China. ROtring, Staedtler, and Mars are brands well-known by engineers, architects, and draftsmen. Faber-Castell is well-known in the art world. Presently, I trying Mr. Pen because I really like their gel highlighters and lower prices. So far, no complaints. But I have both Ain Pentel and Pentel waiting in the wings. Also, I don't care about the little bar code sticker on all my pencils because my hands never touch it except during lead refilling. Buy the GraphGear 1000. It's pricey but worth it if you write with pencil a lot. ... show more

  • Just a great pencil
Style: 0.3mm Pattern: Pencil Color: 1 Pack
I bought my daughter one as part of a Christmas filled with art supplies, and I loved it. But when I went to buy one, the price had skyrocketed to $25! Forgot about it, then looked over a year later to find one for maybe $9-10. Feeds lead great, feels really comfy in my hand, has nice grips all around for the fingers, and a nice system for retracting the tip after you put the lead back inside. Everyone at Dungeons & Dragons is always looking for an excuse to use her pencil when they need to write something down. ... show more

  • Best. Pen. Ever
Style: 0.7mm Pattern: Pencil Color: 1 Pack
As stated in my headline, this thing is amazing. I currently own 3 of them for at work and for my hobby. The weight of it is super balanced and has just a really good feeling to it. I've dropped these things about 15000 times and they've held up wonderfully. The only part that I've had break is the blue screw point that connects the top to the back and was I sad when I saw my pen in that state. So, ordered another and will continue to suggest these to others. 10/10. ... show more

  • Great for woodworking!
Style: 0.5mm Pattern: Pencil Color: 1 Pack
I got this based on YouTube reviews I saw, and I am happy with it. Many measuring tools for woodworking have a tiny little holes in them to accept a half millimeter pencil lead, and I found that with any of my other mechanical pencils, the lead always broke. I am not quite sure what makes this one work, but the lead seems not to break as often. Maybe it’s because of how far it sticks out. If the lead sticks out too far, I retract it entirely, and then click the pencil ones, and the lead now sticks out, exactly the right amount. The tip of the pencil (the metal tube that holds the lead) is retractable, and in fact, it retracts automatically if you clip it to your shirt or apron, but that doesn’t explain why it doesn’t break when you use it to scribe the line. Anyway, it does work and it’s the only mechanical pencil I’ve ever found that works well in the shop! ... show more

  • Love the pencil, hate the eraser.
Style: 0.7mm Pattern: Pencil Color: 1 Pack
I love everything about this pencil except the eraser. I like that as long as I don't lose it or run over it with a car it's probably going to keep working for the rest of my life. My only gripe is the erasers are so small and because of the cap I can't put one of those big end erasers on it. I'll need to keep a gummy or big white eraser around for inking projects. ... show more
