This should be the K2, not 3-III. It has totally re-energized me to go out there and capture moments, because, as much as I loved my venerable K-3 OG, this is head and shoulders above it. Is a bit heavier, but much better autofocus. And the high-ISO is terrific; the picture of Mercury in the night sky is handheld with Sigma 18-300 at 300mm, ISO 102,000. This un-processed pic is not going to win prizes of course, but shows how good this camera can be. The other pics are un-processed also. All taken with the Big Sig lens. For people doing landscapes and birds, the dynamic range is great, the viewfinder is amazing, and the dials are so easy to use, it is like using a film camera again, but with all the benefits of digital. And it is a solid, weathersealed Pentax, made to use out in life, not just inside or in garden somewhere. What could be better - would be nice to be able to see the autofocus spot better. Wish it had the GPS/Astrotracer built in, although the link with the phone works great, so I was able to text pics to family right away after taken. But would probably use less battery if not having to use Wifi/Bluetooth to geotag the photos. I plan to capture a ton of moments with this awesome new camera! ... show more

    • Possibly the best APS-C DSLR available today

Having years ago married myself to Pentax with the K-r and later, K-3, I have collected a lot of K-mount glass. So when it became clear that Pentax / Ricoh insisted on continuing to develop mirrored cameras, I was ecstatic. When the wait for this new model - a completely new camera, (K-3 in name only) - was finally over, I pre-ordered it. When it arrived just in time for a major photographic road trip, I used it extensively and I've never been more impressed by a new body. First, what has improved over good prior tech: slightly more sensor resolution and color accuracy. Image stabilization from quite good to uncanny / class leading. Customization takes a quantum leap with many options to program buttons, dials and entire camera setups through 5 user modes. I use this stuff a lot already, and it makes me more efficient. The new viewfinder is huge, and hey - that's what the DSLR experience is all about! The back LDC is bigger and sharper. What is brand new and wonderful: super-quick and accurate AF acquisition, something Pentax has always struggled with, even in the FF K-1. Track a bird coming straight at you - or a jet fighter, doesn't matter - and with continuous AF turned on, one can nail perfect focus. Touch-screen menu control - and better menu organization. A new switch for viewfinder / live view / movie. Separate controls for drive mode and remote control use. What have we given up vs the K-3? Built-in flash. The K-3 Mark II had already lost that, as well. What's missing? Ahh...just one thing: an articulating screen. When shooting from very low positions, or shooting something overhead from a tripod - that feature would be SO handy. Maybe with the Mark IV? Who's it for? Pentaxians upgrading from any other APS-C body, or someone wanting a very high-end DSLR experience...and for whom jumping to a whole new system is no big deal. Pentax has chosen to double-down on mirrors - they may not even be developing a mirrorless body. So they're committed to this older tech. For me, that's perfect. Who is it not for? Anyone starting out fresh in photography and seeking their first real camera. There's a reason every other manufacturer spends all their R&D budget on mirrorless systems today: that's the future. DSLR's may persist for decades to come, but as a niche. I happen to love the experience, despite the weight of DSLR bodies and glass. But if I were just entering the game I'd be shopping mirrorless. Battery life notwithstanding, that format has solved the problems that held it back for a while, and improved even vs DSLR in some areas. ... show more
