Description

" 1. Star series lens, designed for optimal image quality Designed as a member of the new-generation Star-series series — which provides the greatly improved resolving power that will accommodate the super-high-performance digital cameras of the future — this standard zoom lens compensates various aberrations to a minimum and delivers sharp, clear images, not only in the middle of the image field but at the edges. Incorporating one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass optical element, one anomalous glass optical element and two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) aspherical glass optical elements, it effectively reduces chromatic aberration to a minimum over the entire zoom range. Coupled with high-grade, multi-layer HD Coating, which reduces the average reflectance in the visible ray spectrum to less than 50% that of conventional multi-layer coatings, it effectively minimizes flare and ghost images even in demanding lighting conditions such as backlighting. This standard zoom lens delivers exceptionally high resolving power and outstanding contrast even at open aperture, while capturing beautiful images with a smooth transition of the bokeh (defocus) effect and a true-to-life depth of field. Since its maximum aperture is fixed at F2.8 over the entire focal-length range from 16 to 50 millimeters (equivalent to 24.5mm to 76.5mm in 35mm format), this large- aperture zoom lens makes it an ideal regular-use lens for the PENTAX K-3 Mark III. 「HD」= High definition 2. High-speed AF, minimum focusing distance 0.3m This zoom lens incorporates a newly designed optical system which features a lighter, more compact focus-lens group. By driving this focus-lens group with an advanced PLM (Pulse Motor), it assures smooth, high-speed autofocus operation with minimized operational noise. Thanks to the redesigned focus mechanism, it provides the minimum focusing distance of just 0.3 meters, and the maximum magnification of 0.24 times, making this a handy, regular-use lens for capturing all types of subjects — from everyday snapshots to close-ups and landscapes. 3. Electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism for high-precision diaphragm control This zoom lens features an electromagnetic diaphragm control mechanism to assure high-precision exposure control when used in combination with compatible digital SLR cameras. It also lets the user capture video clips using automatic exposure control, even when there are considerable differences in brightness during the video shooting. When mounted on a PENTAX K-3 Mark III, PENTAX KP or PENTAX K-70 camera body, the PLM (Pulse Motor) assures smooth focus tracking operation and flawless exposure control, while considerably reducing annoying noise generated by focus and diaphragm control operations during video shooting. Its assures smooth, worry-free video shooting in locations prone to considerable brightness changes — such as a stage with rapidly changing lighting conditions, or a forest with filtering sunrays — or with active, fast-moving subjects such as athletes or animals. The lens features the KAF4 mount, and is compatible with electromagnetic diaphragm control. Electromagnetic diaphragm control is available in combination with PENTAX K-3 Mark III, PENTAX K-3 II, PENTAX K-3, PENTAX KP, PENTAX K-70, PENTAX K-50, PENTAX K-S2, PENTAX K-S1, PENTAX K-1 Mark II or PENTAX K-1 camera bodies. We advise that users upgrade the camera’s firmware to the latest version to properly use electromagnetic diaphragm control. When mounted on a PENTAX K-1 Mark II or PENTAX K-1 camera body, images can be captured only in Crop mode, because the camera’s image circle is exclusively designed for the APS-C format. 4. Dust-proof / weather-resistant construction Developed as an AW (All Weather) model, this zoom lens features a dustproof, weather-resistant construction to prevent the intrusion of water and dust particles into the lens interior. By pairing it with a PENTAX dustproof, weather-resistant digital SLR camera body, the user can create a highly durable, reliable digital imaging system that performs superbly even in the most demanding shooting conditions — in rain or mist, or at locations prone to splashing water. 5. Other (1) Effortless manual-focus operation, with limited lens extension during focusing between the minimum focusing distance and infinity and optimum focus-ring torque (2) Nine-blade circular diaphragm to produce a natural, beautiful bokeh (defocus) effect (from open aperture to F5.6 in the wide-angle range; from open aperture to F8 in the telephoto range), while minimizing the streaking of point light sources ③ Quick-Shift Focus System to provide an instant shift to manual-focus operation, after locking the subject in focus during AF operation by pressing the camera’s shutter-release button halfway down; this system can be used at any time during AF operation ④ SP (Super Protect) Coating to keep the lens front surface free of dust and stains"

  • Amazingly general purpose lens with excellent close ability
Size: HD DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 PLM
I bought this for sports photography to complement my new K3 Mark III. What I found was this lens does remarkably well for all around work as well as having the ability to do spectacular macro photography. It's not 1-1 but for flowers, and closeups, the color and detail are amazing. The speed of focus is world's better than the previous 55-300 ED. The new focusing system is lightning fast, and solid. Note the egret and heron photos - these were a hip-shoot of an egret and heron leaping into the air, I turned as fast as I could and just held the shutter for a burst at 300mm hoping to get a shot. The focus was spot on even if the shutter was not as fast as I would like. the flower was taken from about 10 inches away at 190mm f6.3. For a general purpose, lightweight walk around lens this is a winner. ... show more

  • Terrific lens for crop sensor Pentax cameras.
Size: HD DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 PLM
I bought this to use on a K-S2, and loved it. Insanely fast focus, relatively light and portable lens. Image quality is good throughout the zoom range. The PLM focus is unbelievably quick, silent, and does not have the hunting issues that Pentax often suffers from. While Pentax is usually not recommended for sports or other high speed photography, this lens works very well and the three airshows I've taken it to, I never found it lacking. I have since swapped my K-S2 for a K1 mk2 and was initially going to sell this lens to buy a 150-450(another great lens), but decided to also keep this for travel. It's basically the same size as the 28-105mm FA lens. The size of this lens and the low amount of vignetting on a full frame means it is still a viable lens on a FF platform. Short version: On APS-C it is one of the best telephoto lenses available. On FF it is perfectly suited as a telephoto lens for travel where you want more reach, but want to avoid the bulk of a much larger lens. ... show more

  • Not for every Pentax
Size: HD DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 PLM
If you have a Pentax that supports this lens, it's killer. Not all Pentax cameras support adjusting the aperture from the camera on this lens and there is no way to set the aperture manually from the lens. I'm using it with a K-70 and it's sorta amazing. Very sharp. Auto focus is generally very quick and very accurate and if it needs a manual tweak, just grab the focus ring. No switches required. Auto focus is also extremely quiet. Be nice if it had a wider aperture, but with the K-70's high ISO performance it's not a big deal. The wide zoom range makes it a very useful multitasker. It's the lens that stays on the camera when I'm not expecting to need the camera, because for a grab and go it will likely fill the bill nicely. I have a number of other lenses for specific applications, but this is what I use for long range and getting in tight on action. The weather resistant feature is useful. Had a really bad time with an older 55 - 300 Pentax lens when it started snowing at a track meet last spring. Combined with the weather resistant K-70 camera body it will pretty much work anytime you need it. It's also light and folds up into a very compact package when not in use. The button that releases it so it can be extended for use is conveniently located, so it's not an issue. Botom line, it takes very sharp images, focuses quickly and quietly and is very light. ... show more

  • Excellent wide to short tele WR standard zoom
Size: HD DA 16-85mm F3.5-5.6
Aug 2016 update Took this lens on a multi-week vacation in Hong Kong. The weather was hot and humid. Together with a K-3II and this lens, the combination performed flawlessly. The three attached pictures were taken with this combination. All hand held except for the night scene. A fast lens (ie f/2.8 or better) is not required for this type of scene. Nov 2015 update I now have spent more time and come to really appreciate the strengths of this lens. Corner sharpness is head and shoulder better than the Tamron 17-50! This is a big surprise to me. At 50 mm, the FA 50 f/1.4 is still better at comparable aperture, but not by much. This finding actually presents a problem for me - I am starting to look for a better fast standard zoom. ***** Original review ***** I have a read a lot of reviews on this lens. But before saying anything, I need to state that I already have a Pentax 18-135 and Tamron 17-50. The Tamron 17-50 is my most used lens and with the 18-135 as my rainy day lens. The two main reasons for considering this 16-85 is 1) better optics than the 18-135 and 2) the wider 16 mm than either the 17-50 or 18-135. The 1mm difference between the 17mm on the Tamron and 16mm on the Pentax is huge. I like WA lens; I have a Sigma 8-16 UWA, Samyang 8mm & 14mm. With this 16-85, it will reduce the number of times I need to swap lenses. I am not so concerned with losing the 85-135 region because I have several lenses to cover that, including Pentax 55-300, Pentax 50-135, and Sigma 70-200. In terms of optical performance, it does not disappoint me. It is significantly sharper than the 18-135 especially wide open aperture. It is comparable to the Tamron 17-50 at corresponding focal length and aperture. In other words, I can really get along well with this WR combination - 16-85 and 55-300 - for casual situations and landscape photography where fast aperture is not usually needed. I have not tested flare resistance, but reports so far seems to confirm the superiority of the HD coating. AF is very fast and silent; it seems to be faster than 18-135. It does require a -4 focus adjustment on a K-S2 while none for the 18-135. I have not tested on my K-5IIs but I expect similar results. The lens is much larger than my expectation. Both the 18-135 and Tamron 17-50 are small compared to this 16-85. So I am not saving space when I substitute this 16-85 for the Tamron 17-50. The filter size is 72 vs 67 on the Tamron. The lens is well build but not heavy despite the size. The lens hood is well design. I took one star off because it is not perfect. It is substantially more expensive than either the 18-135 or the Tamron 17-50. Aperture is neither fast nor constant. I would pay a little more to have constant f/4.0. The slower aperture especially towards the long FL end does not lend itself to challenging low light photography. In summary, I highly recommend this lens if you can live within the constraints of the lens. WR is handy if you find yourself in wet or rainy environment. ... show more
