I’ve been a Penn loyalist for decade. I live in Bay Area so I’m a sturgeon slay, Hali-Hunter, salmon and stripped bass. I own 4 320 git’s and they are still kickin strong. I decided to add one more reel, so I bought the Squall 2 50lw. I have to say I’m impressed. Solid build, smooth crank, loud bait runner clicker, plenty of drag 33lbs. I purchased this with great anticipation of using on this years Striper Run on the Hudson River. The Line Counter models are supposed to automatically trip spool engaging mechanism to retrieve when the cranking the handle is turned. I got my reel the other day and started to load the line with line last night. While checking out the action, I come to find out this function does not operate as advertised on the one I received. PENN used to manufacture all their reels in PA. I went to their website and found out that only certain reels are still made in the USA. The websites states that some reels are made in Philadelphia, but others are manufactured "Internationally". I looked at my reel there is a small sticker under the foot of the reel with country of manufacture. Low and behold, the reel I ordered is made in China I guess their Q&A is not very good overseas. I am disappointed that a company that was once an American icon has succumbed to having their products made offshore. I have 6 line counter reels (3 Okuma LC's , and 3 Shakespeare Tidewater LC;s. They all work exactly the same way, when pull back the lever, the reel is in free spool, when you turn the handle about 1/2 turn, the Eccentric Lever clicks in. According to the descriptions I read while researching this reel before purchasing, the Penn Squall 20LC is supposed operate the same way. I contacted the seller about the issue and requested a refund. All I got was an email back asking if I tried adjusting the star drag. I replied back to them two days ago that I've tried adjusting the Star Drag to increase and decrease drag with the Bait clicker in both on and off positions as well as made adjustments to the Spool Tension Knob, but the Eccentric Lever will not engage when you turn the handle. I have yet to receive an offer to replace the reel or a refund so it looks like I will have to escalate through Amazon. ... show more
