  • Tough as the North Pacific!
Come on, this is a Penn Reel!! Know for decades as the leader in the Salt for Quality and ease of function! Not only do these reels look good, they perform even better! Easy to use drag system that is reliable when it counts and these are able to withstand the year long deep sea rigors of Alaska! My boat pretty much only carries Penn Reels for the heavy demands of bottom fishing up to and including two Penn International Reels. These Squall II reels are so much easier for folks who need the level wind, I have had these in the hands of friends and family from the lower 48 with not one single issue! Penn has been my favorite reel on the salt for nearly 50 years! I recommend you buy one, or two, why not three like I did. Man, I think I may need to buy a couple more just to have on standby. ... show more

  • Good reel for flatheads and blue cats
Style: Squall Ii Level Wind Size: 50LW
Big reel for big fish this by far is one of my favorites from penn and I love the built in harness clips to battle strong fighting fish for both fresh and salt water

  • Tons of features for the money
Style: Squall Ii Level Wind Size: 50LW
The reel is outstanding. It has a great drag system and a clicky drag star. The level wind is sturdy and held up nicely, even with large pelagic species and the retrieve ratio is also top notch. I wish Penn would make more reels like this.

  • Perfect for Stripers!
Style: Squall Ii Level Wind Size: 20LW
Quality reel and works very well so far this season. I use several of these for trolling in brackish water. (Salt/fresh) Mine are rigged with 30lb mono line rigged with tandem and umbrella rigs. Catch 20-30inch Stripers with ease. Drag on these reels is smooth, and quick to apply. Highly recommend these to anyone trolling for big fish. Just like anything else; if you do not wash and take care of these after salt use, they will fail. Proper care and these will last years and years. ... show more

  • The reels have been put to the test... I am impressed
Style: Squall Ii Level Wind Size: 15LW
I searched for a good reel to balance out my 3 rivers fly and tackle Ice fishing rod that I use to catch Halibut. By using a small rod I needed extra line capacity. I went through 2 other reels before I picked up my first Penn Squall 15lw. The line capacity with 65lb braid gave me over over 400 feet of line, which at times is all needed to bring in a Halibut on such a light rod. The combination held up to a full summer of torcher testing. I landed at least 5 halibut in the 50lb plus class on this little reel and rod combo as well as a giant skate and numerous other species. I have had no issues with corrosion that I could find and I used this reel at least 30 days this summer. I know it was much more I just don't want to exaggerate my numbers. The drag worked well to bring the fish off of the bottom and never had a issue with fade. The level wind never once stopped working, which is important when you run the amount of line to the max. I loved the reel so much I built a couple more rods and bought more reels to replace more of my traditional halibut rods on the boat. ... show more

  • Works like a dream
Style: Squall Ii Level Wind Size: 50LW
I have it 75% filled with 120 pound braid on a 12 foot rod. I use it to fight stingrays and crab snaring. I can put a big herring with a 5 ounce weight and cast it a mile!! It’s not too bulky to cast but it’s good enough to have a fight with decent size stingrays. Would definitely recommend for surf fishing, there’s nothing better than hearing that clicker go off!! ... show more

  • HOW TO ...... BRAIDED LINE ON REELS = AK TOUGH
These are the best reels are not only great in quality but super easy on the budget! A good majority of the guide boats in Homer ak use these reels and by far are the most popular reel in Cook Inlet for halibut, Ling, and Salmon! I have the squall 30s for my halibut. LINE (I am using this setup for Trolling kings in homer ak and can be used for rock bass and such....lings too) This is how I spool Braided line on my reels. Braided line is EXPENSIVE! If you spool 300yds of braided line it will fill less than half of your reel up with line. You WANT that reel fuller to its top end in order to get the full reel and drag capabilities. On these reels one revolution of the reel handle is 3' of incoming line but if you only have half the spool filled, it will be much less than that. Fighting a fish or checking bait in 40' of water isn't that noticeable but 200' of water IS! so here is a trick to fill the reel up with only 250-300yds of expensive braided line and less than a $7 of backing material. Use a Blood knot to tie Dacron to spool base. MAKE SURE TO TAPE THE STRING DOWN! You don't want slippage! Start with 35yards of 80lb Dacron, moisten the string on the spool with a light oil to prevent corrosion on your reel, spool on another 45yds for a total of 80 yds of just Dacron.... (this is the stuff i used from amazon) http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010FQTHM?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00 Then use an Albright Knot (google it) to fasten your braided 65lb line to finish out your spool. I buy the 1500 yard spools........ 1500yds divided by 5 reels is 300yds of braid or 1500/6= 250yds......I do 300yds and get 5 reels out of it. The Dacron 80lb comes in 400 yards so 400yds/5reels= 80yds.... I can spool each rod brand new at $34 per reel...The kicker is I only have to respool the braided 300yd portion which saves a TON of money since you only have to go to the "backing" material. Plus even if you want to respool the Dacron backing it only costs less than $7 to replace. Braided line I used http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D3FR7E6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00 ... show more
