Decent 3000 size salt water reel when matched with a medium fast action rod. Although the ball bearings are shielded it could have more of them. I have two of them loaded with 15lb braid and they work just fine with artificial baits.

I used it for a surf fishing weekend and reeled in a 2.5ft shark and large stingray among other smaller fish. Reel held up well. Had it on a 12ft surf pole. The shark bent a 2/0 circle hook and the reel had no trouble hauling it in.

I have faith that this reel will last a long time but I’ve had some others for several years that cost half as much, weigh less, have less friction in the retrieve, and have a higher drag rating so I don’t see me getting another Penn unless I need the fast retrieve rates that they offer.

I first bought one of these at a tackle shop for saltwater. It was a Pursuit III 4000. Absolutely loved it. Then I got a pursuit II 5000 for another saltwater rod. Loved so much changed out my freshwater bass rod to a Pursuit IV 3000. Most recently an older reel pissed me off for the last time on my crappie rod so I ordered this Pursuit III 2500. I love them all for all their fishing scenarios. I plan to get one of each of the higher series as well. My go to reel from here on out. I fish saltwater, freshwater, cold water, and Ice. This reel holds up against everything. The drag system works flawlessly. And reel has a fast smooth easy retrieve. And it’s a perfect budget reel!! I won’t buy anything else ... show more

I am a charter captain I have seven of the Penn pursuit III 2500 fishing reels, which I’ve use for seven years none of those have given me a problem with regular rinsing and light oiling just a good all round reel for the money can’t beat the Quality of the reel for the money it cost it’s a good deal ... show more

Great value for an inshore reel with this quality. This is not like the next level Penn reels, but is a very solid piece. I bought a 2500 for my 6.5 ft medium/heavy spinner rod.
