Unbelievable this even left the factory, even the eyelets didn’t line up and it could not have been due to the poor packing, sheer negligence and zero QC, if anyone looked at it they would’ve instantly trashed it. The rod is utter garbage which is the most important part of the setup, a reel doesn’t tell you if you got a nibble, set the hook etc. Anyway, the reel is actually pretty nice and smooth but I didn’t spool it so can’t speak to drag quality instantly returned. To keep this price range put $75 on a reel (or less) and $75+ on rod and you will be much happier. If you want this reel adjust your budget to $250, get the reel and separate rod and it’s still a good pick imo but may be better out there in that range. Still can’t believe this rod is soooo bad compared to the reel lol. ... show more

I have become a fan of the fierce line, particularly with the 4000 live liners I picked up the battle 5000 with the 2 piece 8 footer hoping 2 use it for head boat tog fishing. I couldn’t wait so I took it fluke fishing . I did happen 2 “limit out” but the real and really impressed me.. very smooth, fairly light & well balanced. Let me preface this review by saying I added the "Gomexus" Round knob handle. (Included in Photos) The Penn Battle III 5000 series reel with the (2) piece 8' foot rod is great for all beach, pier and inshore fishing. I paired this rod with Spiderwire 30lb braid and I can cast a 1 oz. spoon farther than most of my shore rods. The rod handle is 16" inches and affords to whip a bait harder and farther. I am super happy with this rod / reel combo and now have qty. (2). Do yourself a favor and pick up one. You will NOT be disappointed. :) ... show more

Received package and contents in good shape. Rod was in one piece. Packed the same way. My suggestion to the package would be to identify an end to be the bottom. That way the tips are not pointed down.

It came with a bunch of scuffs on it. I buffed some of them out. Some of them remained. To much hassle to return. Overall pretty good quality though.
