Description

Now with darker text (4th printing). Do you wish your knitting was better and that you had an expert knitter by your side to help you when it goes wrong? Then this is the book for you - it even has a special lay-flat binding so you can keep your hands on your needles. Patty Lyons is an expert in all things knitting related - she will help you sort out your gauge, unpick problems like twisted stitches and generally spruce up your knitting know-how in this pocket-sized reference book packed full of her purls of wisdom. Patty is a well-known knitting 'agony aunt' and she will hold your hand as you tackle the problems that often beset knitters and get in the way of beautiful finished projects. This handy guide will always be by your side to help you unravel your yarn problems and get you back on track. Packed full of practical advice for knitters as well as step-by-step instructions for a whole raft of knitting issues, this is the ultimate guide for anyone who's ever picked up yarn and a set of needles. This isn't like other how to knit books with basic information about casting on and how to form stitches (although there is a handy how-to reference section at the back for when you need a refresher), this is a book about the why of knitting. Not about why we knit but about why we knit the way we do. By digging deeper into the why Patty doesn't just fix your knitting problems she helps you to truly understand why the yarn/stitches/needles/tension are acting in a certain way and how to fix any issues. She starts by looking at the basics and explores the anatomy of a stitch, examining how this affects the look, feel and shape of the finished knitted fabrics and how different knitting techniques affect the finished outcome. Patty examines the problems caused by common mistakes that many knitters make without even noticing before diving into more complex knitting issues and how to trouble shoot them. All of Patty's techniques and tips are illustrated with detailed step-by-step artworks for absolute clarity. And, as you'd expect from a Patty Lyons book, there is a healthy scattering of humour and irreverence thoughout; you might take knitting seriously but you don't have to be serious while knitting! Make your knitting journey compete with companion title, Patty Lyons Knitting Bag of Tricks; The Official Workbook, which is now available. Read more

  • Great for All Skill Levels
I have been knitting for years and I still learned so much from Patty! I mean Patty Lyons, am I right?? She is terrific and friendly. This book is well worth the money. She explains the "why" in easily understood terms and encourages you in your knitting like your best friend! I plan on making my way through this book chapter by chapter and technique by technique. I also bought the work book and that is such fun and includes space for your knitting notes, swatch samples and thoughts. The Franklin Habit designed stickers in the work book are fun and cute and a great plus! ... show more

  • Well written, great illustrations
As a self taught knitter, this book is a wonderful resource. It's easy to read and very clear in educating the reader how to approach a knitting project to maximize success. After ripping out several sweaters over the years because the fit was way off, I really need this book. The book itself it bound to allow the pages to lie flat and is of high quality. I'm so glad I made this purchase. ... show more

  • The Grey's Anatomy of the Knitting World!
First impressions...I really love the quality of this book. The paper is smooth and heavy...the cover looks durable and the binding top notch. I love how it is a sewn binding so that the pages lay flat when you turn the pages. I can imagine being able to throw this into my knitting bag and not worry about it falling apart and getting frayed. I really appreciate how Patty has a combination of photos with illustrations which place emphasis on the action being performed. I normally have a hard time processing illustrations and prefer photos...just the way my mind comprehends things...the way the action is showcased in a different color is brilliant! Of course, the whimsical drawings by Franklin are a nice added touch as well! Patty delves into the why behind the stitches and really helped me gain an understanding of the anatomy of the stitches and how that makes the knitted fabric behave. It is almost like a fiber physics class. Instead of just telling me to do an action...but why I am doing it... it is creating a mindset for me to help solve some problems I may encounter on my own as well. Honestly I feel like a have a teacher in my knitting bag ready to guide me through any project I may have on my needles. I have been knitting for over 18 years and I have to say...I have learned so much from reading this book. I only wish I had it as a reference when I was a novice. I honestly think that if Elizabeth Zimmerman was alive today..she would be giving Patty and five star review and saying way to go Patty! ... show more

  • This book is fantastic!
If you’d told me a year ago that not only would I buy a book about how to knit better, but that I would ENJOY it, I would have said you were full of it! But I’d started to learn how to knit a while back, and I was still struggling with some things. Saw this recommended on the Purl Together channel, and the lady there is great, so figured worst case scenario, it just ends up in my unread stack. But I was honestly hooked from page one, and this was a quick read for me. After not quite half-way thru, I started a new practice swatch, and omg, this one was so much better than what I normally put out! It was totally flat (I wasn’t twisting my yarn anymore!), and when I read the section about pattern knitting, it was like when you’re playing a video game, and you open up a new section of map and can suddenly see all this stuff that was hidden to you before. I’m still very much a beginner (haven’t finished anything bigger than a washcloth!), but I found this book to be a very valuable resource. Really helps you understand the mechanics of knitting, from how you hold your needles, how you pull your loops, and how twisting in different directions will all affect your stitch. Very cool! ... show more

  • Useful tips. Usefully explained!
Well written, humourous and a lot of tricks to help one's knitting look better. I'm an intermediate knitter, always looking for a new technique. This book has really helped with the knit picky little things which we usually just close our eyes and pretend we don't see. Patty has a great teaching method and explains why the problem occurs and how to make it better. Just buying a second book for a friend who is new to knitting and who'd rather not spend any more time looking things up on the computer! ... show more

  • Some fun knitting tricks to improve your projects
I do a lot of knitting, but am always open to suggestions for improvement. This book has lots of fun and practical tips on preventing errors, correcting errors, subtly improving technique, and so on. I found many of these knitting hacks to be very easy, with great results. A few others I thought were a bit difficult to follow, despite the detailed instructions and drawings. The buttonhole method I found especially frustrating. I followed the instructions exactly, but the buttonhole still had that small hole at the edge. The whole point of the hack was to avoid creating the hole, so I don't understand why I had trouble with it. It's not like I haven't knitted dozens of buttonholes before. Even with this criticism, I recommend the book. The author has a good sense of humor and is fun to read, and most of her tricks worked really well. ... show more

  • Think you know it all? Trust. You don't.
It doesn't matter how long you've been knitting (I learned 40+ years ago), you need this book. The multitude of tips, tricks, and general wisdom imparted by the author is simply not available in any other single volume. And whatever you do, don't say you have nothing left to learn. Please, don't embarrass yourself. Just buy the book. ... show more
