I've taken some of Patty's classes before and I don't always remember all her tips until after I could have used them, if that makes sense- now the tips are organized, illustrated and printed out so that the next time I start a project, I can quickly flip to see if there's a tip that oh yeah- I should have remembered that! New knitters will understand their knitting and avoid bad habits while the more seasoned will understand the 'why' better. The true knitting nerds (like myself) will also find it just a pleasurable read from cover to cover, nodding in recognition of the mistakes and lessons we've hit ourselves along the way. What is really remarkable (and rare) is that Patty is able to show you how something you've done (maybe a thousand times) could be improved- but without making you feel foolish for having done it that way or damaging your knitting self confidence.     • A Gorgeous and Educational Book
Format: Paperback
This book is so helpful! I'm a beginner knitter. As a sewer and a generally crafty person, I assumed I would pick up knitting and be amazing at it right away. Ha! Learning the mechanics of how to knit and purl was easy, but getting good results is a whole other thing. This book really helped me to understand the anatomy of stiches, which is something I have not seen explained anywhere else. I feel this will give me a good foundation since I'm just starting to learn. There is a lot more info in the book that is more advanced than where I am right now, so I look forward to coming back to it as I progress. Another thing I really appreciate about this book is that it's very high quality. The binding is sewn, so the book lies flat when it's open. And it's also just beautifully designed, which makes it a pleasure to read. I've already ordered the workbook that goes with this book as well as pre-ordered her Knitting ER book which comes out in October. ... show more

    • Five Immediate Improvements to my knitting & my self-confidence

I've been knitting for many years, but have never figured out how to pick up a dropped stitch from a cast-on row. Patty just explained it to me (page 79). Before that, though, on page 69, she showed me how to cast-on without a slip-knot (well, she explained and Linda Schmidt illustrated in a way that made it clear). I now know how to increase into the row below (page 124) and bind off in pattern without that stupid loop at the end (page 175). Most exciting to me: I believe I *can* do short rows. For me, pages 151-155 were so enlightening & encouraging that I think my eyes welled up a bit. I mentioned just 5 that immediately leaped out, but there's so much more I'll be putting into use, including finally learning to read my knitting now that I know what I should be looking for. The photography clarified the information throughout the book, too, and of course Franklin Habit's illustrations were charming. I've read a lot of instructions over the years (Lucy Neatby & Carol Sunday are just two whose explanations have helped me in many ways, e.g., how stitches work), but somehow I never was able to put into practice the specific actions I've mentioned here. This book came along at exactly the right time for me, and it will remain in my knitting basket for quick reference. This is a wonderful book for anyone who likes to knit, is learning to knit, who wants to understand how to knit with more confidence and a better understanding of what they are actually doing with the yarn and the needles. The book gives many tips and explains many of the mysteries of knitting--why do some stitches look different than you expect? How do you repair that problem you noticed several rows down? Why does that loop go one way when you thought it would go another? Patty Lyons truly educates you as to the process and makes harder knitting tasks seem more approachable and understandable. She does this while being funny and relatable. I ordered the book, thought I would just thumb through it when it came in, and ended up reading almost all of it in one sitting, highlighting and making notes. I honestly keep it handy when knitting because when I am frustrated, I can often find an answer here.     • Some fun knitting tricks to improve your projects

I do a lot of knitting, but am always open to suggestions for improvement. This book has lots of fun and practical tips on preventing errors, correcting errors, subtly improving technique, and so on. I found many of these knitting hacks to be very easy, with great results. A few others I thought were a bit difficult to follow, despite the detailed instructions and drawings. The buttonhole method I found especially frustrating. I followed the instructions exactly, but the buttonhole still had that small hole at the edge. The whole point of the hack was to avoid creating the hole, so I don't understand why I had trouble with it. It's not like I haven't knitted dozens of buttonholes before. Even with this criticism, I recommend the book. The author has a good sense of humor and is fun to read, and most of her tricks worked really well. ... show more

If you’d told me a year ago that not only would I buy a book about how to knit better, but that I would ENJOY it, I would have said you were full of it! But I’d started to learn how to knit a while back, and I was still struggling with some things. Saw this recommended on the Purl Together channel, and the lady there is great, so figured worst case scenario, it just ends up in my unread stack. But I was honestly hooked from page one, and this was a quick read for me. After not quite half-way thru, I started a new practice swatch, and omg, this one was so much better than what I normally put out! It was totally flat (I wasn’t twisting my yarn anymore!), and when I read the section about pattern knitting, it was like when you’re playing a video game, and you open up a new section of map and can suddenly see all this stuff that was hidden to you before. I’m still very much a beginner (haven’t finished anything bigger than a washcloth!), but I found this book to be a very valuable resource. Really helps you understand the mechanics of knitting, from how you hold your needles, how you pull your loops, and how twisting in different directions will all affect your stitch.
