  • If it does not work... install it properly, its not defective!
If the light is flashing and its not working, it was not installed correctly. Please read this entire review if you are using for domestic pet containment. For context, I am a dog trainer with many certifications and 30 years of experience with dogs. I have a 150lb dog that was experiencing anxiety issues after a move. After he tore apart a chain link fence to go look for me when I was gone, I needed a way to assure he was contained. He broke two teeth in his first misadventure and I live on a highway so he had to be contained at all costs. My containment area is 30feet by 40feet. I got the PE5 charger rather than the PE2 after reading other reviews because they mentioned not being a strong enough deterrent. I grew up around these things so I knew installation is everything, however, they have changed since the old "weed burner" days so I got the Pe5 as a precaution. I plan on replacing with the lower power PE2 .1 joule version as PE5 .2 is a MOST unpleasant experience. My unit had been returned before I got it underscoring the misconception that the units are faulty, when in fact they are not being installed properly. Grounding impacts performance, so dry ground will be less conductive, unless you install the way I did. I used a grounding rod as per the instructions, however, I also ran a ground wire to the chain link fence that I was electrifying. This essentially turns every post into a grounding rod. In addition anything touching both the fence and the wire would create a closed circuit/arc. My wire is 6" off the fence so there is no way my dog can avoid hitting both lead and ground if he challenges the fence. For those of you using this for dogs.... this requires a lot of training. Also this is not for young dogs. Your dog should be a MINUMUM of 6 months old. I personally would not use it on dogs under 1 year. You must teach your dog not to touch the wire and be available in the pen when he does until he learns to respect the wire. If your dog becomes entangled in the wire DEATH IS A VERY REAL POSSIBILITY. If your animal is used to jumping on the fence he could land on the line... so training is absolutely necessary. The line gives 1 shock every second, a few shocks is safe but if continuous it will interfere with breathing and heart function and it is PAINFUL! The sensation is not like getting a static shock. It is like touching a live electric wire in your house. Extremely fast, but it does cause every muscle to contract for that 1 millisecond. Since all muscles contract upon contact it is possible that your animal could be thrown INTO the wire, to minimize this risk, the wire should be placed so that the nose/head of the animal will come into contact first. Stay in the containment area until your dog learns to respect the wire! A negative experience is never a good idea in dog training since the trainer never knows what the dog will learn from the experience. I would not use this if I had another alternative. This will scare the CRAP out of the dog. If your confinement area is less than 1/2 an acre-ish, your dog will most likely the dog will learn to fear the entire confinement space NOT just the wire, which will cause a need for another layer of training to reacclimate to the confinement space! My dog would not reenter the space after his first encounter. It took massive quantities of honey baked ham to get him to enter again. Every few weeks he will touch it again and we have to do the "ham exercise" again. If your dog alerts on a subject on the outside of the fence and comes in contact with the wire, it is most likely your dog will blame the subject for the shock. Future reactions might be fear, or if you have a dog like mine aggression toward the subject, so be careful your dog is not "baited" into touching the wire by external stimuli. Note from the picture I also used pipe insulators in tight locations where the dog could accidentally touch the wire... the dog is 6 feet long and the space coming out of his doggy door is 4 feet wide, so consider such things in your install. Don't set your pooch up for failure! To acclimate to the wire: I turned off the wire and knelt by the wire. I pushed the dog back every time he came close to the wire and said "no". After he noticed the pattern I turned it back on. He was warned. My dog KNOWS this training exercise well from issues not related to the fence. With the wire live, I stayed in the containment area with him and warned him "noooo" everytime he got close. Eventually, he touched the wire and was devastated by the outcome. It took me days (and lots of ham) to get him to reenter the area. The fence is off when I am at home. I turn it on only when I leave. I occasionally need to encourage him to enter again. My remote cameras tell me that he occasionally touches the wire with his tail in the corners. My estimate is that he hit the wire 6 times before he started to learn that the wire was biting him, not some invisible boogie man. Life is normal again now. ... show more

  • Works fine, contrary to naysayers
Super easy to set up, works just fine, despite some of the negative reviews below. Those saying it "doesn't push more than 10 feet" obviously don't have the ground rod in properly. My wife got shocked more than 300' down wire when she wasn't paying attention, and I'm only using an 18" ground rod. Using stranded 1/8" Diameter Portable Electric Fencing Poly Wire Rope. Anyway, this was put in to keep the dear from traipsing across my newly topsoiled, graded, and seeded lawn on their way to munch on my wife's honeysuckle and fuchsias. First night it was up, apparently one deer got so startled (this was, again, almost 300 feet downstream from the charger) that it leapt over the fence, taking down one of the temporary posts, rolled over in the yard (which did mes it up, but I hadn't seeded yet) and fled. Reviewing camera footage was hilarious). Since that incident, not one deer track in the new yard, whereas before install, they were nightly visitors. I did also add the "Deer Pops" sold by Deerbusters on their website, which connect to the fence and attract the deer to sniff/lick them and receive a nice little surprise. ... show more

  • It put my raccoon raider on a diet
Pros: + Appears well-made, but time will tell on the longevity + Seems to do the job against raccoons and deer + Very easy to securely attach wire + Pulse light fairly easy to see, especially at night + 0.20 joule pulse definitely gets your attention, if you touch it accidentally + Hasn't seemed to really harm any of the pests, and doesn't bother the birds (it helps if you don't give them a chance to perch between both the hot wire and a ground). Cons: - Wish it didn't require a shelter outdoors (- 1 star for this, as I think it should, although I do understand that rain/ice might short the terminals together) - Wish it pulsed more often, for squirrels - Wished it worked without wires, as my wife hates the asthetics of an effective installation. After a little more than a month, it seems to do the job against my fat raccoon pest and his use of my bird feeders as an all-you-can-eat buffet. After initial indications he tried to get through and failed, my raccoon has not reappeared since I rearranged the wires, and the bird feeder only needs refilling less than once a week now (as opposed to 2-3 times a week previously). It also appears to have repelled an attempt by the local deer, as the wires and supports were pushed down, but nothing else happened to the feeders or flowers within the perimeter I'm slightly annoyed that I have to make a shelter for it, but I was warned in the instructions. Although they are not the pest the raccoon was, I've seen squirrels jump over and pass under the wire without getting zapped, so I wish its 1 pulse/second rate were a little higher. (Haven't yet figured a way to tempt the squirrels into using the energized wire as an access to a grounded feeder. However, I do have an idea for the suet feeder they were using as a trapeze last winter....) Among my dreams are a wireless zapper. I think I'll get that about the time Amzaon sells hoverboards and flying cars. Good product. Recommended, so far. ... show more

  • keeps the deer out of the garden
tried bird netting the first year, worked like a charm at keeping the deer out. once they figured out it was bird netting, they had a wonderful diner. So...... I put 2 strands/layers of the electric fence up at 30" and 4' (there is 24" chicken wire on the bottom) and the "free restaurant" is effectively closed to deer ... show more

  • The ground is too dry.
Price was okay, delivery was very fast, one day. I live in the desert and the ground is so dry if I don't wet it down a little it doesn't work. When it does my goats get repeat for it fast.
