  • The Holy Grail of camers!
Style: FZ1000
I will do a more thorough review after a few more weeks of ownership but after shooting 30-40 videos and about 2500 photos I think I can weigh in now with my initial impressions after a couple of weeks of use. I am very much an amateur photographer. I have been a professional videographer in a past life. My primary use for this camera is for the normal family stuff like vacations and holidays but I also use it for my hobby that I share with my son. He flies RC helicopters at a relatively high level. I shoot flight videos for YouTube and also some photos at the larger events. Video is definitely my first priority but having the ability to shoot decent photos in a wide range of conditions with the same camera I use for video is a huge plus for me. I got the camera a few days before leaving for the world's largest RC Helicopter event in Muncie, Indiana. It is an international event that lasts 4-5 days and brings in well over a thousand pilots. I used the FZ1000 exclusively for video and stills. I am in the process now of posting photos and videos of the event on various websites and forums. I previously used the FZ200 for it's convenience. It shoots adequate video but the stills are very limited. The FZ1000 is in another league compared to its little brother. The sensor is about 4 times larger and you can certainly tell. With the FZ200 I usually shot video in MP4 at 30fps. If I wanted to shoot at 60fps I had to shoot in AVCHD which is more difficult to work with. With the FZ1000 I can shoot 1080p at 60fps in MP4. The video looks dramatically better than what I was getting from the FZ200. I have shot a little 4K video but I don't currently have any way to watch video at that resolution so until that changes I will reserve my opinion on that. The helicopter video that I shot at this is event looks awesome. I did not experiment a lot with settings but have no complaints. It did very well even in low light situations. This is a great video camera. Period. I have not explored shooting in 4K and pulling 8mp stills from the video. That has a lot of potential for what I do with the RC hobby. I shot thousands of stills at the event. Many were macro shots of new products and such. Those turned out very nicely. The vast majority were on mostly auto settings with ISO of 125. I also shot a lot of action photos of helicopters in aerobatic flight using burst mode. Generally this worked very well and it did not slow down much until 40-50 frames had been shot. Perfect for what I am using it for. IQ was good in good light. Obviously in low light the 1inch sensor cannot compare to a full frame DSLR or even APS-C or four thirds cameras. However I got very useable images in low light. Yes they were noisy but useable for my purposes. The flash is good with more reach than the one on the FZ200. I used it primarily as a fill-in and did not experiment much with it. Compared to most point and shoot cameras this has noticeable depth of field and decent bokeh. The autofocus is really fast and accurate. The manual focus is good considering that the ring is not actually connected to the lens using a fly by wire system. The electronic viewfinder is good. Much, much better than others I have used. The articulating screen is a bit small but very useful. The camera is not small. Much larger and heavier than the FZ200. I carried it everywhere for 5 days and it wasn't bad. It uses the same battery as the FZ200. This is good because I have two spares already. The downside is that battery life is not nearly as good. I found that leaving the screen off helped greatly. With that turned off the difference between the FZ1000 and FZ200 was not significant. I owned a Panasonic FZ50 back in use day and loved it. I have told anyone that would listen that what I was hoping for someday was that camera with a larger sensor and quality video. I hate having to carry multiple cameras and lenses. With the FZ1000 I put a spare battery in my pocket and that is it. The lens works for 99% of the situations that I face. A larger sensor would have meant a larger and heavier camera. I think that in general Panasonic nailed it with this one. For the first time ever I have one camera that can shoot really high quality video and nice stills in one package. I have not even begun to explore all of the features of this camera. For someone like me who is moving up from an FZ200 this is an awesome camera. I could not be happier. Is it perfect? No but considering the balance between sensor size and length of lens and, of course, cost I think Panasonic got this one right. For me this is the holy grail of cameras. ... show more

  • Great Camera for Video Blogging
Style: FZ1000
The media could not be loaded. I was looking for a camera to shoot videos for my new video blog. I wanted a camera that was great for recording video as well as for taking stills. The FZ1000 has been great at both so far. I've been really impressed with this camera in terms of its operating speed, its zoom, its ergonomics, and the photos and videos I've taken. Here is a list of my initial thoughts on the FZ1000: Pros: ------------------------ - Fast performance. Turning the unit on and navigating the menus is all very quick. - The auto focus is super-fast and accurate. - The articulating LCD comes in real handy for my video blogging sessions - Wi-Fi sharing is definitely a require feature for all of my future cameras - Remote Wi-Fi shooting capability is great - The 3.5mm microphone jack is useful. My old camera had a 2.5mm jack that wasn't as compatible with popular mics. - 4K video for under 1K Cons: ------------------------ - The plastic body. Yes, I know they are trying to keep the cost down but I still had to mention it - The body may be a bit bulky for some - I wish the 4K was at 60 fps - I wish the FZ1000 also had a headphone jack - The LCD is not a touch screen - It's not a super zoom, although, I might be asking for too much for this price range Why not a DSLR? ------------------------ I didn't choose a DSLR because I didn't want to buy expensive lenses, lug all of them around, or spend time switching them. I know I am sacrificing some capabilities by going with a bridge camera instead. I just decided that I'd rather buy a camera that serves my most important needs, not every possible option. Why the FZ1000? ------------------------ When considering the FZ1000, its ability to shoot video in 4K while costing under 1K was a big factor. I know there aren't a lot of people out there with 4K displays. I just wanted to be among the first to produce 4K content so that I could 1) differentiate my new video blog from established ones and 2) put more 4K content out there to help move more people to the format. Of note, I read that when you down scale 4K video to 1080P, the output looks really great compared to filming at 1080P (don't know if that's true). I also read that zooming into 4K video content can lead to great 1080P content. On the other hand, zooming into 1080P content may lead to content that appears lower in quality (any thought folks?). The FZ1000's fast and accurate auto focus also influenced my decision. I wanted to be able to film in dynamic environments and get the best possible auto focus performance available. Another consideration was Panasonic's reputation for creating cameras that are excellent for shooting videos. I watched and read many reviews on the FZ1000 and on the GH4 and was convinced my next camera would be one of these devices. As I mentioned above, I ultimately decided against getting a DSLR (i.e. the GH4). Perhaps as I progress further into videography, I'll consider adding the GH4 to my arsenal. Wrapping Up ------------------------ As I mentioned at the top, I've been really impressed with this camera. I like how fast it is. I like some of its unique features such as its remote Wi-Fi control. I like its long zoom, although I do miss not having a super zoom. Mostly I like the HD video this camera produces. I think the FZ1000 ability to record smooth, high quality video is going to help me get to the next level in terms of videography. I totally recommend this camera and I'm very happy with my purchase. Update ------------------------ I added an unboxing video. Sorry for the low video quality. I had to reduce the quality to meet Amazon's file size limit. ... show more
