  • Excellent Product
The kettle I received did NOT have the chemical smell that others reported. It looked great right out of the box but I still oiled the outside the same way I would oil a cast iron skillet. Don't bother coating the inside, any oil you put in will either burn or dissipate into the water. As for some of the other complaints (water spills out the top, have to keep refilling, rust, etc.) all I can say is think about what this product is listed as. Of course it will boil over if you over fill it. The fact that you have to keep refilling it is pretty good evidence that it is working properly. It WILL get rusty, it's iron. Iron naturally rusts faster when it is hot and adding water certainly doesn't help. You can ameliorate this by oiling it (the outside) regularly, not just once, and cleaning out the inside. To clean the inside, fill it with a 4:1 water to white vinegar solution and bring it to a slow boil for an hour or so. IF your fire gets really hot, boil it on the stove because you don't want a rolling boil. Dump that out and scrub it down with some steel wool or a stainless steel wire brush and you should be ready to go. ... show more

  • Well made and attractive
It is solid and quite heavy when full of water. If you set it on a stove with an enamel finish you will want to set it down carefully or set it on a trivet. You will notice an odor the first time or two it gets hot but that goes away. Yes, it will rust but I conditioned the inside the same way you would to a cast iron skillet and that helped a lot. It looks attractive too, if that's important to you. ... show more

  • this is NOT to be used for consumption
This kettle is very heavy duty cast iron but it is not sealed in any way so, when the maker says its not food safe, BELIEVE them. It does a good job heating water on our fireplace to keep some humidity in the air and I am grateful to not be getting static electric shocks any more. Being unsealed, it is subject to rust so be sure to clean it out every so often and wipe off any water on the outside if rust spots are a problem for you. ... show more

  • NOT FOR FOOD
My mother had one of these sitting on a wood-burning stove for years. I wanted a new teapot and saw this one, so I bought it. When it came, however, it said specifically that it wasn't made for food, so I returned it. I can say, however, that these work great to humidify the air on top of a wood-burning stove. It was great for that, and it looked good doing it. ... show more

  • Okay for the money!
Was looking for a "humidifier" for our wood stove in stead of just a pot on the stove. Saw this one and thought we'd give t a try. The price was right. I seasoned in inside and out before we filled it with water, but the insides still rusted up quite a bit. No Biggy. Takes heat from the stove well and starts steaming quickly. You have to watch how much water you put in it or you get spatter. Another thing is you have to refill it quite often, we use our wood stove 24/7, and have to refill the kettle roughly 3 times a day depending on how hot we run the stove to match outside temps (more if it's really cold outside like temps 20 and lower when we really let the stove hum). If it's around 28 at night and we damp down the stove and fill it right before we go to bed it'll be almost dry by the time we get up. Could be bigger capacity wise. It will discolor from moister coming out through the lid and spattering from the spout, not to mention your stove top. But if you can live with this, and the times you'll need to refill it then it'll be worth it to you. But for decorative purposes, it's okay. I've not seen anything for a wood stove yet that matches a big pot for hassle free humidity like a 10-15 quart....so....hope this helps you decide... ... show more

  • I love my kettle!!!
This is a good quality kettle I have loved cast iron for ever and this fits just beautifully with my other cast iron items, this winter will be so comply when I put it on my stove for blissful humidity. it is cute , just adorable everything I ever wanted in a cast iron kettle. for the time being it will be sitting with my other irons for decoration but when winter comes it will be put to good use. Thank you MidAtlantic Merchant. Now my days of searching in flea markets and bazars is over! Signed: A Very Happy Customer. ... show more

  • Not happy at all
I understand that this is just for putting humidity in the air but it is full of rust on the inside and it left white marks and rust spots on the top of my wood stove after using it for a few days. When you open it to check the water level it always drips onto the stove top and I guess that's what caused the problems. I am currently letting my stove cool down so I can try to clean it up but it looks like I will have to use some touch up paint to correct this issue. I am also going to paint the kettle inside and out to see if that helps, otherwise it will be set aside and never used. This shouldn't damage the stove from a little water dripping but it seems to go under the kettle and when it drips and that is where the marks were. I didn't see the marks until I decided to move it to another spot on the stove top. NOT HAPPY! ... show more

  • Season it
This is a great product. Just like ALL cast iron, you must season it. Empty it and clean with white vinegar, heat on stove until completely dry, Coat with cooking oil, put in a 350 degree oven for an hour, turn oven off and leave it in the oven until it’s cool. It will have a slight smell from the oil but it won’t last long.. fill with water and no rust.. ... show more
