  • Decent first (intermediate level) violin for under $90
Summary: This is a decent 1/2 size violin with lots of extras for under $200. We were able to purchase it for about $87, a few days before Christmas. According to the manufacturer website, this is an intermediate level instrument. My daughter is 7 and this will be her first violin. Shipping: shipping was fairly fast via UPS, although it was delayed for a day, likely from the snow storm and Christmas holiday. Two nits with the delivery: they left the instrument in freezing temps right outside our door when there were light snow flurries (most string instruments are sensitive to temp fluctuations and being out in the cold all day could be damaging). Secondly, the box looked pretty beat up. No idea if it had been thrown around. No labeling on the box saying "handle with care". Also there was an air bladder for "protection" but there was hardly any air in them. Some of our grocery items from Amazon were better packed than this, and this is a delicate instrument. So, kinda disappointed in the packaging and handling but the instrument didn't appear to be damaged. Accessories: There were multiple extras with the instrument, a nice case with hygrometer and a pocket for your shoulder rest and another wider pocket for extra strings, rosin, cleaning rag, etc. It indeed came with rosin, a tuner, an extra set of strings and a shoulder rest. Most of these items though, we'll likely replace with better quality ones (in fact, for the tuner, there's an app for that). I currently use pirastro goldflex and jade l'opéra for rosin for my viola, so I'll probably just share that with my daughter. The rest it came with has collapsible feet, but for the life of me, I can't keep it on the instrument. We're going to shop around for a rest she likes. The bow is wood although some of the strings are out of place, as you'll see in the picture. Bag: The bag can be carried multiple ways but I like the straps they provided. Nice steel carabiners. Compared to my knilling viola bag, mine looks cheap with its plastic hooks. I do like that there's a handle on the top, sides and then this can also be configured to wear backpack style. There's also an outside pocket the length and width of the case for sheet music. Music books barely fit in there though, so I guess sheet music can fit if they're folded? Probay could fit a small notebook and pencil. Violin: The instrument itself has a wooden bridge (unmarked, probably manufacturer), and the wood doesn't look like it's been sanded down completely. The front is one piece, and the back is two pieces with some flaming. Ebony fretboard and pegs and 4 fine tuners. No markings inside the instrument that can be seen from the f-holes as to the brand. It comes with a chin rest. It is set up ready to play but definitely needs tuning. The sound is very open and bright and not at all screechy. I was pleasantly surprised. This is the reason for the 4 stars. This sounds much better than the 1/2 violin she tried out at my viola/violin teacher's studio (that one was screechy). Even for its size, it sounds better than other full-size basic violins I've heard. Granted, I really only started my viola lessons this year and am not an expert by any means, but I've watched enough you tube videos of violin/viola instrument reviews from different reviewers and based on those, I think I have a fairly good idea of what sounds good and what doesn't. The strings on the bow being out of place actually doesn't seem to affect the sound. There's also no smell on the instrument. I feel confident once we replace the strings with nicer ones, it will sound even better. However, for a beginning violin student, I think this is a decent set up, especially for under $90 (what we paid, on sale). I would highly recommend this as a starter instrument. ... show more
