    • Is it worth the purchase?
Well that depends on your perspective of need vs. want and how often you eat avocados. For our family, this device replaces three tools (large knife for seed removal, small knife for slicing avocado inside skin, and large spoon for scooping out the avocado meat). It can be daunting to have to maneuver and clean this many tools every single time we eat an avocado, and for us it is almost daily. Finding this 3-in-1 tool by Oxo made me giddy; but, left me wondering if it were more of a gimmick than a tool. I took the plunge and purchased it solely on the reputations of Oxo as a developer of intuitive, well-made kitchen utensils and Amazon's solid return policy should this item be ineffective for my needs. This investment has paid off. Right out of the package I could feel the durability and stout structure of the utensil. I have small hands and find this tool to be a bit big for my handling; but, the more I use it the more I adapt, and the more impressed I become with it's ingenuity. The end that cuts through the avocado skin, although a thick plastic, penetrates the avocado skin like softened butter. The seed extraction blades worried me at first as they are blunt with no sharp ends; however, they sink into avocado seeds with great ease. Releasing the seed from it's blading counterparts is no longer a dangerous activity for myself or the sink. As for the slicing spooned end of this tool: the plastic is stout and stronger than well-made plastic butter knives and is definitely better quality than a similar device I purchased made by Cook's; inserting the spooned end, slicing, then scooping is easy enough as the plastic cuts through the avocado meat like softened butter. The only issue I have ran into is dealing with stem strings that come through the stem into the avocado meat; but, I feel that this issue is more of a learning curve in use of this tool than a reflection on the tool itself. As for cleaning, prevention is always the best bet, simply rinse the entire utensil off directly after using it and you will avoid the headache of dried avocado meat stuck in small crevices. With regards to product improvement... at this point in time I see none to be had. Time will tell as to the longevity of this tool. A stainless steel version (18:8 or 18:10) would be splendid; but, until such is placed on the market, I will continue to revel in the ingenuity of this existing avocado tool and remain appreciative to Oxo for their intuitive creativity! ... show more

    • Great kitchen tool
I still use this, 5 years after purchase, for every avocado that we eat. This tool is so well designed for avocados, the blade cuts perfectly and the fins scrape and cut everything out cleanly. Great tool and totally worth having.

When I looked at it and decided to order it I was skeptical if it would actually work. Well, it really does. It is so easy to use. The cutting side, even though it doesn’t look like it would cut around the pit, it does! The center is used to remove the pit and the back side has a hole to just push it out. I wasn't sure if this tool would actually work as well as other owners claimed. But it's affordable enough to take a chance. So for I find it works well enough to justify the cost. First, the sharp edge does a fine job of halving the avocado...and safer than a knife. Second, the pit/seed removal tool definitely exceed my expectations. I don't care for the scooping tool much. Too much avocado gets caught in the slicing spaces. I'm just using the knife -like piece to cut out the avocado and that works well. Then I just slice up and mash as usual. It would be great if OXO added a part to facilitate mashing. ... show more

    • Easiest tool for preparing avocados
This tool makes avocado slicing easy and quick. I bought one of these again recently after the previous one of the same model had worn out after many years of use. One of the pieces on the slicing side broke and the plastic was becoming discolored black despite cleaning thoroughly every time. But like I said, it had been used frequently for many years. I'm actually pretty surprised it held up that long. It was a no-brainer to toss it and get a new one because it works so well. I like specialized kitchen tools, but too many of them can take up too much space in the drawers and cabinets. This one is easily worth the space for my frequent avocado habit. ... show more

I recently added the Oxo 3-1 Avocado Slicer to my kitchen gadgets, and it has quickly become a favorite. This tool is fantastic because it handles every step of preparing an avocado: splitting, pitting, and slicing. The stainless steel pitter is incredibly efficient, removing the pit with a single twist. I love that I can get perfectly sliced avocado pieces with minimal effort, and the comfortable non-slip grip makes it easy to handle even when my hands are a bit slippery. One thing to note is that the avocado needs to be ripe for the tool to work best. When it is, the slicer lifts the fruit out in seven perfect pieces every time. Cleaning up is a breeze since it's top-rack dishwasher safe. It feels very durable, and I can see it lasting a long time in my kitchen. Had to chop eight avocados for a recipe. Bought this to assist. The cutting and pit removal worked well The slicing component didn't. It just made mush, rather than actually slicing through the flesh of the fruit. It is possible that if the fruit is less ripe it might work better.
